The Call of Cthulhu is an absolutely gorgeous telling of H. P. Lovecraft's titular story (different from the story that inspired SIFF 2007's Cthulhu), done in the style of the 1920s silent film. Every note is hit exactly right, from the sets to the lighting to the sparse title cards, and the end result will leave you delirious. Many a foolish filmmaker has tried to match cinema's early roots; director Andrew Leman is one of the few to have succeeded. Bonus points for keeping it a lean 47 minutes long. The DVD release includes the usual extras, plus intertitles in 24 languages including Catalan, Turkish, and Euskera.
