THE EXORCIST: THE MUSICAL

"Ever since Saturday Night Live's Gilda Radner defiled The Exorcist by exclaiming, "Your mother sews socks that smell," Linda Blair's vomiting, urinating, head-spinning, muff-diving antics have inspired slapstick folly as much as nightmares. Bad Actor Productions adds a Bon Jovi song, a baton-twirling drag queen, a giant stuffed panda, and some gay dance-club numbers to the equation, but it's a flop. On the night I went, one of the musical numbers (a rendition of Laura Nyro's "Captain Saint Lucifer") didn't even garner applause. The script strains to be funny, as do the actors--particularly hackneyed drag queen Em'ma Gawd! (as Regan's nanny)--who repeatedly find themselves on the ka-thud! end of jokes that don't work. " (Josh Feit) Northwest Actors Studio, 1100 E Pike St. $12. Fri at 9 pm, Sat at 8 pm. Through March 5.
