recommended DEAN KUIPERS
Burning Rainbow Farm: How a Stoner Utopia Went Up in Smoke, a nonfiction account of something that went down in Michigan in 2001, begins: "Rainbow Farm campground was empty on the Friday morning Tom Crosslin burned the place to the ground. Two teenage lovers named Omar Alham and Vanessa Hunckler has been the last to leave, taking down their tent two days earlier, but that red morning they were flying toward it again, fishtailing down the dirt road, dust billowing in a monster ecru cloud behind. Tom hadn't really told them why they had to leave, only that 'stuff's happening'... The campers at Rainbow Farm had called the car the Hempulance because Omar took the county roads like he was operating an emergency vehicle. He drove fast as a point of pride, always arriving just in time with the antidote to ordinary blues. Many were saved, and many believed the cannabis plant could save the world. But now it seemed like it was Rainbow Farm that needed saving." University Book Store, 4326 University Way NE, 634-3400. Free. 7 pm.
