When Peter Parker's drummer, Steve Parker, tosses one of his drumsticks into the crowd, dozens of hands reach up to grab it, like desperate bridesmaids fighting for the bouquet. The stick bobbles from hand to hand before falling to the ground, where 17-year-old Jacob Bearchum saves it from being stomped on by the swarm of Chuck Taylor sneakers.

"I feel so proud," joked Jacob after Peter Parker's set. "I've never caught a drumstick at a show before! The other stick he threw hit me in the head. That didn't feel too good."

On Friday, February 15, Cincinnati's Moth was headlining the radio-sponsored "Penny Pincher" show (meaning the cover is only $1.07 for members of KNDD The End's e-mail list). But it was obvious that the majority of the crowd, including Jacob and his showmates Chad Hansen and Melanie Kile, crammed into the usually 21-and-over I-Spy to see Peter Parker and Alien Crime Syndicate, the two local all-ages favorites opening the show.

"Peter Parker is the main reason I came here tonight," said Jacob. "It's not so much that I connect with their lyrics, but I really enjoy the riffs and I like the way Josh [Parker] plays guitar. Their sound is different, it isn't mainstream."

"Regular mainstream music is such a bore," said Chad. "That's why I listen to older rock like the Doors. Modern music gets old."

Jacob, as noted, was already a Peter Parker fan, but now he's a fan of Alien Crime Syndicate too. "I'd never really heard them before. That's another reason I came tonight, to check them out. I enjoyed them--they remind me of '80s rock."

The three Mountlake Terrace High School seniors have varying tastes in music. Chad usually sticks with older rock ("Although I'm still mad about the fact that the Strokes didn't play here," he says), while Melanie is a fan of the up-and-coming band Thursday, which will play an all-ages show at Graceland on March 24.

Jacob doesn't care about genre labels so long as the music's good. Radiohead, Weezer, Zebrahead (whose talent is arguable), he's a fan of them all. But there's one thing Jacob, Chad, and Melanie agree on--a trip to Dick's Drive-In after every show.

"It's a tradition," said Jacob.

"Yup. Good food, friendly faces," agreed Chad. "Plus it's cheap." MEGAN SELING
