We all make mistakes. Even I get bitten by the stupid bug (though not often). Like back in August, when Onelinedrawing came through town immediately following an overzealous and dumb writeup in Seventeen magazine (part of the infamous "Am I Emo?" spread). Instead of giving Onelinedrawing (aka Jonah Matranga, former lead singer of Far) a chance, I teased him for being just another emo poster-boy for the masses. That's right, I'm a jerk.

But I went to the show anyway, and wouldn't you know, I was floored by his intelligence, humor, and endearing modesty. Plus, the guy could really sing, and he had some pretty great songs. How could I have been so mean? He's honest, open-minded, and supportive of all things creative, and I just wrote him off as a shallow, in-it-for-the-chicks emo dude. I'm sorry. I made a mistake.

And because I fell for Onelinedrawing's music--and the fact that he did a wonderful cover of Jawbox's "Angel"--back in August, you bet I showed up for his performance this time around (again at the Paradox).

Boy, was he fantastic.

In between songs he shared thoughts, gushed about the idea of individuality being sexy, and commented on the war and the importance of becoming educated about the world around you. He even offered to donate money to the Paradox in hopes of keeping the place from closing.

"I don't know why this place won't be doing shows anymore," he said. "But if it has to do with money, I'll gladly give some of mine."

It's wonderful to discover someone so sincere and able (and unafraid) to be himself. And despite past appearances in teen mags and trendy tags, Onelinedrawing really is... wait a minute! Back up the truck! Did he just say the Paradox won't be doing shows anymore?

He did! A number of times throughout the show, actually, he pointed out that this would be his last appearance at the 'Dox--not because he's never returning, but because the place won't be around when he does return. (The club will host shows through the winter, however.)

"This time next year/I won't be here," he sang in the closing song "Tides," a tune more than appropriate for the somber occasion. "By then I swear/I'll be somewhere/I rely on this." MEGAN SELING
