There are two totally great shows this week, and they're both completely free. On Thursday, Sept 9, the Paradox is hosting a hardcore lineup with the Answer, Where Eagles Dare, Five Good Reasons, the Backup Plan, Claymore, and Six Demon Bag.

Where Eagles Dare are from Arizona, and are said to be (by a reliable source... meaning my friend who knows a hell of a lot about hardcore), "one of the best bands in their genre." They blast through a loud, fuming brand of the stuff with enough ferocity and authenticity to knock you on your ass.

Also on the bill are Claymore, a five-piece from Port Orchard, WA. After recently acquiring a new bassist, the band's live show has become a tight, explosive beast to reckon with, so it's no wonder their number of local shows is steadily increasing. The band battles through a traditional heavy and aggressive hardcore base, but piercing guitars erratically explode with math-flavored and metal blasts, breaking apart a familiar formula and weaving it back together with an experimental, edgy noise.

Doors open at 7:00 p.m., show starts at 8:00.

Also this week, Music for America, the Vera Project, and 107.7 The End present a free show at the Vera Project on Saturday, September 11 (Patriot Day), dubbed Recapture the Flag. The show starts at 4:00 p.m., goes all night until 11:00 p.m., and features some of this city's very best punk/rock acts (the Catheters, the Hollow Points, the Insurgence, and Murdock are all on the bill, just to name a few). Between bands, speakers will also be discussing important topics that affect young voters, and there will, of course, be voter registration forms available if you haven't already registered (of if you've recently moved), so you can take care of that before the 30-day registration deadline hits.

And if you're a Catheters fan, you should take note that their Recapture the Flag appearance will be one of the last chances to see the band before they're officially done. It's true, they're breaking up (there's no juicy gossip or drama; guitarist Derek Mason is just focusing on school). There aren't any set dates for a last show yet, but there's talk of it taking place sometime in October. Of course, you'll hear all about it once final details are announced. MEGAN SELING
