Washington's longest running all-ages venue, Redmond's Old Fire House, turns 12 this month. After more than a decade of supplying all-ages action, the venue has some mad hook-ups within the local music community and has put them to good use, whipping up an impressive show to celebrate the occasion. On Friday, September 17, the Blood Brothers headline at the club with Mikaela's Fiend, Murdered Housewives, and Smoosh.

Longtime Old Fire House supporters, the Blood Brothers are set to release their much-anticipated follow-up to last year's Burn, Piano Island, Burn later next month. In the meantime they're taking a night off of the pre-record-release chaos to turn the Fire House showroom into what's sure to be a hot and sticky hardcore dance party.

Openers Mikaela's Fiend aren't quite as familiar to me. I've heard great things about the fast-paced, keyboard-heavy spazcore that the band apparently supplies, but embarrassingly enough, I've yet to see or even hear them. What I can tell you, though, is tonight is the record-release celebration for their new untitled 7-inch. The band took a strict DIY approach to making the self-released record, doing everything from recording the music in living rooms to screenprinting the art themselves at the Vera Project's screenprinting lab. The 7-inch will be available at the show.

Also playing are longtime favorites of mine, Smoosh. The adorable blond preteen duo might seem a little out of place on this otherwise rock-heavy bill, but there's no way you can put Smoosh in front of a crowd and not have them be immediately embraced. Not only are the young girls flaunting the courage to get up on stage in the first place, but they can also write some simple yet impressive pop tunes. If you haven't yet, be sure to check out their new record, She Like Electric.

Besides being a record celebration and an anniversary party, though, the Friday night show is also a benefit. Earlier this month local art punks Shoplifting had a bunch of their equipment stolen while on tour in New York. Unfortunately, their stuff was never recovered, so some of the proceeds from tonight's show will go to helping the band recoup a portion of their losses. Show starts at 8:00 p.m. and costs eight bucks at the door. MEGAN SELING
