One of my favorite Seattle memories is of witnessing then City Council Member Margaret Pageler chase Rocky Votolato around the room at Miller Community Center while he played an Elvis Costello song on his acoustic guitar.

The historical and hilarious scene took place back in May of 2002, during the impromptu anti-Teen Dance Ordinance dance party, held by The Stranger and a bunch of local kids, in the middle of one of Pageler's "Support the TDO" community meetings. As we all know by now, the TDO has since been squashed and replaced with the much friendlier All-Ages Dance Ordinance (AADO), and while there are now dozens of shows every week for young music fans, there still seems to be one element lacking in the underage scene: DJ dance nights.

The Catwalk occasionally hosts all-ages or 16+ DJ events (check www.catwalkclub.net for a schedule), but there really isn't a regular all-ages club night for the kids who wanna have a killer time dancing around like fools.

Vera is moving to change all that. One of the venue's latest calendar additions is the new monthly event Fever, a dance night happening 9:00 pm to midnight on the third Saturday of every month.

May's installment is this weekend, May 21, with music from DJ Summah Jamz (AKA The Stranger's own Party Crasher columnist Ari Spool), DJ Mac, and Jizosh. And, to take things to another fun level, Saturday's Fever is also being celebrated as "Anti-Prom Night."

Vera will be decked out in anti-prom décor and everyone who dresses in either prom or anti-prom attire will get a dollar off the $6 admission. I'm not sure what anti-prom fashion is exactly, but the pig's blood scene from Carrie comes to mind. Maybe you'll be able to come up with something that requires less corn syrup and red dye, however.

I've unfortunately never made it out to Fever (this is its fourth month), but Ari promises a good time by spinning everything from Out Hud to Boyz II Men. "Fever is especially cool because there are usually b-boys there, and it has none of the pretension that comes with other dance nights," she says. "You don't have to look cool, just bust some shit out and everyone will cheer you on."

And for those who are into the whole prom vs. rock show thing, Redmond's Old Fire House is having a punk rock prom of their own on Friday night, May 20, featuring Shoplifting, King Cobra, and Doomsday 1999. It starts at 8:00 p.m. and costs $6.

Footloose heartthrob Kevin Bacon said it best: "Let's dance!" MEGAN SELING
