Happy New Year! It's a fresh start, a clean slate, an opportunity to make this year even better. One thing I'm hoping to do in the New Year (besides floss and pay bills on time) is go to more shows. I didn't see nearly as much live music as I'd have liked to in 2010. Let's blame busyness (when in actuality it was probably more laziness). This year, I promise to damage my hearing AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.
I'm not the only person with high hopes for the New Year. I asked some of my favorite local music makers what they'd like to see happen over the next few hundred days. Here's what they had to say:
D. Crane, BOAT: "BOAT would like to create a supergroup with members of Shook Ones, the Long Winters, and the Nightgowns. Also, we would like to procure three more King Kong suits."
Rachel Flotard, Visqueen: "Oh, 2011, you fresh slate of a thing. Some of my immediate goals for you are to pick up a different instrument, back up my computer more than never, eat more like a monk, and commit helpful/hilarious deeds as often as humanly possible. Then rinse and repeat."
Ben Verellen, Helms Alee and Verellen Amplifiers: "In 2011, I'm gonna conquer stress and stuff my sorrys in a sack."
Lesli Wood, the Redwood Plan: "My goals are to record and release the new Redwood Plan album, record and release the new Mal de Mer album, tour a ton, go somewhere new like Portugal or Morocco, spend more time with people I love, and try to not work myself into a monthly stress-induced meltdown. Oh, and to learn how to juggle. Knives."
Whitney Ballen: "I hope to gather a backing band of musicians and look like a 1960s-like country-star dream girl. I want my band and I to stand on random multilevel platforms, just like on the old Johnny Carson performance setups."
Now it's your turn—what do you resolve to do in the New Year? We have just over 50 weeks to make shit happen. Ready... GO!
