The new documentary by Gary Hustwit—the filmmaker behind Helvetica and Objectified—is a beautifully photographed, elegantly edited film about 21st-century urbanization. One of my favorite moments involves former Bogotá mayor Enrique Peñalosa cycling around the city as he talks about the forms of transportation that improve democracy and those that don’t. Another is the architect Jan Gehl describing the city as a party—a bad city is like a bad party and a great one, a great party. What makes this doc so impressive is that it’s less about facts and more about ideas—the interviewed professors, designers, and community activists have lots of great thoughts about the meaning and ideal purpose of a city.
