In the last 16 years, Dems held a house Majority and a filibuster-proof 60-vote majority in the Senate for checks notes FOUR MONTHS: from September 24, 2009, through February 4, 2010. This was when the ACA passed.

2

hey all you centrists
the Fasciis are coming
for You too but maybe
they'll get to you Last?

4

@2: Are you implying only the left-wing fringe can beat the right-wing fringe? No, centrists are well positioned to dilute the fringes.

5

" grown woman who opted to spend the summer of 2020 as an intern at a California winery doesn't want to be associated with the party of working people."

What an odd statement. Will might want to consider visiting some of our local vineyards and orchards: he might run into a few "working people."

6

She “interned” for free dipshit. That’s what he meant.

7

"If you don't
support unions of
police and firefighters,
you don't support unions... "

omg. right. and the
Nazis were all
Socialists too.

Maybe Will can explain to me how exactly Adam Smith is to blame for the fact that the Democrats have not had the supermajority they would have needed to codify Roe? And don’t respond with “ eliminate the filibuster “. As a Congressman Smith gas nothing to do with that.

11

“
failure of the Democratic Party to codify Roe v. Wade
”

Is there any way we could stop repeating this flat-out nonsense? It’s like a sports columnist demanding to know why the coach didn’t have the batter kick a touchdown basket. It’s that far removed from the basic reality of how the US Federal system of government actually works.

We voters in the state of Washington codified Roe vs. Wade, because Roe set limits on what laws states could enact to restrict reproductive freedom. When we passed I-120 in 1991, we put those same limits on Washington state’s government. So, the overturn of Roe had no effect at all on reproductive freedoms in Washington state; those same limits remain in full force.

Congress has no authority to forbid states from putting restrictions on reproductive freedom. None. Anyone who claims Congress can do this is either ignorant or lying.

12

I was excited about Sinema's election back when it happened--openly LGBT+, non-theist. But it turns out she's just a money-grubbing liar (aka politician) just like like so many. Bummer. Hope she get's her aerobicized butt kicked out of office next election.

13

11: "Congress has no authority to forbid states from putting restrictions on reproductive freedom. None. Anyone who claims Congress can do this is either ignorant or lying."

Since when? Earlier this year? Give me a break with this BS. Just as assuredly as Congress can pass a national abortion ban, Congress can sure as could have passed federal abortion rights legislation before SCOTUS killed Roe.

@12: I, too, was hopeful that Sinema would be more than she is. Whenever a Democrat wins in Arizona...well, it's noteworthy. In 2018, she ran against a woman who, although not a pistol-packin' Mama who thinks the world is only 6000 years old, would have voted as someone who was. I thought it a victory.

Shouldn't be too surprising. She's kind of been all over the map during her political career - once running as a Green. What I don't get is how someone can abandon a party mid-term. Yes, Bernie and Sen. King are independents, but ran as independents. I remember some Southern Democrats, like Strom Thurmond, switching parties when it became clear Democrats had become more Lincolnesque than the old Republican Party. Shit, wouldn't Ol' Dixiecrat Strom be in congressional heaven today?

Seems to me that if you were elected as a certain party member, you should be required to stay with that until the next election cycle when you can run as whatever you wish. Sinema becoming independent midterm, after all the shit she's tossed, has not enhanced my already low opinion of what she is and what she's done. Is there anything more to her than merely wanting to be the Senate jezebel?

17

@13, @14, @15: “Just as assuredly as Congress can pass a national abortion ban, Congress can sure as could have passed federal abortion rights legislation before SCOTUS killed Roe.”

Yes, you’re completely correct.

Congress has neither the power to pass a national abortion ban, nor the power to place limits upon a state’s ability to restrict reproductive freedoms.

18

@14, @16
Sinema is a modern version of Sarah Palin - just a hell of a lot smarter!
“Look at me! I’m a maverick! I’m independent!”
She knows she would have been primaried out by Gallego - so now she can keep her committee assignments over the next 2 years, and get all the media attention she wants, while building her war chest for 2024. The late Sen McCain might be spinning in his grave, but you’ve got to hand it to Kyrsten.

20

Man. That comment above is like the easiest Dumb Fuck Fox News talking point scavenger hunt ever. It’s a veritable mad libs of wingnut catch phrases.

All it was missing was “Killary,” “Plandemic,” “Benghazi” and “Groomers” and I would’ve got Bingo.

21

The progressives bullied her, harassed her, and trashed her in the media during the Build Back Better negotiation It is the same tactics they use in Seattle to silence anyone who doesn’t pass the purity test. She was concerned about inflation. She was right to be concerned. I don’t blame her for becoming an independent to avoid a primary challenge.

24

@22

Yes, it’s a poison pill on her part. She saw that Kelly one by a healthy margin and knows she would lose a primary in 2024. Now, if the Democrats run anyone, they will be up against an independent who caucuses with them and votes with Democrats 91% of the time. She knows would split the democratic electorate and hand the seat to a Republican in 2024. This was a pretty astute defensive strategy on her part to keep her seat while not actually having to change any of her political positions or behavior.

25

@19: Yep. Sam Brinton is a national cringing embarrassment. Marjorie Taylor Greene has more class.

26

"Independent", my ass. I always knew Arizona real estate magnate Krysten Sinema was really a RepubliKKKan merely posing in Democrat's clothing, and this cheap new stunt to hurt progressives proves it. Along with Joe Manchin, Sinema is nothing but a revolting money-grubbing sock puppet of Mitch McConnell's. I hope Sinema chokes in 2024, along with her neofascist Party of Orange Turd.

@12 CharlesUFarley: "Hope she gets her aerobicized butt kicked out of office next election." +1

@16 Bauhaus I: I share your frustrations about Krysten Sinema.

@18 pat L: "....you've got to hand it to her." Seriously? Personally, I'd like to hand Krysten Sinema--along with every RepubliKKKan, because that's what she really is---a shit sandwich. Whose side are you on, Pat?

@19 NoWokeZone: Dude--who exactly do you know among RepubliKKKans who's a reasonable alternative?
What's your definition of a "reasonable alternative"?
As long as they're under the smell of the Orange Turd, bootlicking RepubliKKKans are neofascists, batshit crazy, truly horrible excuses for people, and sore losers, too.

@22 STII: I, for one, do NOT like that Sinema and Manchin caucus with the Democrats. They only scheme for RepubliKKKans and their own self interests.

@23 oldwhiteguy: Kari Lake, along with Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Lauren Boebert are all Trumpist Nightmares.

@24 98102CH: Krysten Sinema is poison--period.

@25: Marjorie Taylor Greene has NO class, raindrop. Was that supposed to be your point?

27

In happier news, Happy 91st birthday, Rita Moreno!

28

@3 oldwhiteguy: RepubliKKKans rely heavily on uneducated voters. Why do you think they're hellbent on fattening 'em up and dumbing 'em down? These people among the working class, blindsided by the Orange Turd's media circus--regardless of skin color and ethnic background--have the most to lose. All too often they are misled into believing that by forfeiting everything that would benefit them the most: affordable healthcare (ACA), affordable housing, livable wages, decent educations, getting properly vaccinated from widespread disease, preserving their Constitutional rights, and addressing climate change and global warming that they're "owning the libs".
Meanwhile, the Orange Turd is laughing its fetid ass off, hunkered down in its Mar-a-Lunatic swampland hide-y-hole. ~ 75,000,000 MAGA suckers are still dumb enough to believe.

29

@26 - That's right. MTG has no class. So to say she has more class than Sam Brinton makes a joke.

30

@29 raindrop: It's not a good one. The entire RepubliKKKan Party of Orange Turd is a sick joke, at the expense of everyone and everything else. That's not a laughing matter for a dying, unsustainable planet of 8 billion + people and counting.

Re: Adam Smith "Listen, we took a lot of shit for backing your latest reelection effort. The main reason we did, aside from your lefty challenger not raising anywhere close to enough money to mount a serious challenge, was that you were supposed to be able to flex your "relationships" and get good shit into the NDAA every year."

Uh, we told you so. He never has and he never will; why did you expect anything different? Perhaps his lefty challenger would have raised more money if the town's formerly(?) progressive rag had endorsed her.
