Thanks again, Ralph.

2

No difference between a vote for Clinton and a vote for Trump.

None.

3

Fuck, it's not a good day to be a woman. May any politician being caught sneaking their mistress across state lines for an abortion be flogged in a public square for all to see & judge.

4

I drove on that section of I-5 on Wednesday. It's pretty worn down; the expansion joints feel like speed bumps.

This is the only Slog AM topic I can address without rending my garments.

6

@5 God, you are tedious awful person.

7

Clarence Thomas is a real life Clayton Bigsby.

8

@6, agreed. @TS can you block this fuck's IP address(es)? Snark is one thing, This is just cruel stupidity.

9

Meanwhile, at the Legion of Doom...

10

Girls and women have now been deemed incubators for every fertilized zygote. If men believe their lives will not be affected by this they are delusional. And the court is coming is coming for contraception, same sex marriage, and gay rights next. Every single fertilized zygote must be given birth to now (or the vessel must die trying). Men better be ready to pay up, because every single fertilized zygote that is brought into this world as a child will need to be taken care of financially and the days of men walking away unscathed are over. Men best be ready to pony up the cash to pay for their fertilized zygotes and it will cost them. So every man doing some sort of gleeful dance today about how women's lives have been destroyed. Yours will be destroyed too (in the only way that you care about, financially). The cost of this decision is immeasurable. In a society that does absolutely nothing for anyone who brings a child into it and does absolutely nothing for any child that is born into it, this is a sick, sad day. Forcing girls and women to give birth to every fertilized zygote is sadistic dehumanizing misogyny.

Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Cohen all lied under oath during their congressional hearings. And now they are literally destroying everything they can while they can.

Enjoy what rights you may have today because you won't have them tomorrow (unless you are a white male who wants to carry a murder weapon and use it to kill people whenever you want for whatever reason you have anywhere you please).

Women need to deny men all access to their bodies and need to start using guns to take down any man who attempts to use his penis to impregnate. This is an all out motherfucking war and basically everyone, somehow, in one way or another, is going to end up dead.

Fuck every single motherfucker who allowed Mitch McConnell to steal the SCOTUS seat from President Obama and fuck every single motherfucker who voted for Trump. Have you gotten what you wanted yet? Are you proud?

11

Women have a human right to control their own bodies.

No illegitimate, abusive, sadistic, destructive Republinazi is ever going to control what me and mine say or do.

ABORT THE KKKOURT.

12

Ironically, this whole fiasco could've been avoided if Mary had gotten an abortion.

13

“Women have a human right to control their own bodies.”

Not anymore they don’t. It’s done. And they will come for gay rights and contraception next.

It’s not a right if it can be taken away. And the people under 50 that lived in the world where they thought they were entitled to progress has come to shattering halt. It will work backwards now.

But you know. It was really important we take a principled stand against corporate democrat Hillary Clinton. Right? BUTTERYMALEZ! Benghazi! She shut out Bernie!

Or whatever bullshit. Well. Welcome to the consequences.

As predicted it only gets much, much worse from here.

15

One of the worst aspects of this psychopathic, illegitimate, Republinazi ruling is that state foster care systems are already past the breaking point. There is no one to take care of all of these forced mothers and their children--house them, feed them, educate them--and zero desire to anything about it. We're tailspinning even further into a squalid Dickensian dystopia.

16

@2 And your ideological purity litmus test is the reason we are heading back to the middle ages you moron.

17

Yes, I know (or hope) you were trying to be funny. But this isn't funny anymore.

18

@12: Abortions are ineffective on immaculate conceptions. Praise Jesus.

20

@3:

I'd go a step farther - public castration doesn't seem to be out of order. After all, SCROTUS just decided that human bodies are the property of the State, so the citizens of a State should have a say in how those bodies are configured.

@5: And this is why no woman in their right mind will ever let you put your tiny peen inside them...

".... tried to say gay marriage/contraception isn't next, but why do I find it difficult to believe......"
And unfortunately, this isn't all about overturning or passing specific laws. This is all about factions being able to stick their noses in other people's business & controlling the actions of other people.
As much as this is the result of the greed for power of a relatively small group of people, in much larger part it's a reaction to the open insults to people's personal values:
As much as gay people don't like being abused & discriminated against, straight people don't like public displays of affection (by any orientation) or displays of debauchery.
As much as women want to control their own bodies, society values personal responsibility.
Just as the Radical Right self immolates & hands the White House to Democrats, the Radical Left embarrasses itself & hands the White House to a corrupt NJ Casino Owner.
In Jimmy Carter the USA had one of its most honest, moral presidents......& we tossed him out. He was boring. He was mundane. He was only hard working & honest.
We're getting ready to do the same with Joe Biden. He's only experienced. He's only hard working. He's only disciplined. He's only on message. America wants exciting. God help us, America wants The Apprentice & "You're fired." Bread & circuses......how'd that work out 2000 years ago?
Organize with discipline & protest wisely.

36

"Joining Seattle's Pride weekend are closed I-5 lanes between I-90 and Spokane Street."
Certainly a great way to get yourself noticed. I wonder how much sympathy, concern, & cooperation it will develop between the Gay community & the 10s of thousands of drivers they piss off? If you want to shoot yourself in the foot, this seems like a great idea. If you want to get fence sitters on your side......not so much.

@10, comments like yours cause me to wonder just what kind of men you have been exposed to.....what kind of environment you've lived in all your life. You have my deepest sympathy.

@13, "...But you know. It was really important we take a principled stand against corporate democrat Hillary Clinton. Right? BUTTERYMALEZ! Benghazi! She shut out Bernie!"
Yeah, she's another one like Carter & Biden. I'd have thought that ANY woman who was smart enough to put up with the humiliation of being Bill's wife for the rewards of multiple govt pensions, millions in political support, a NY Senate Seat, & the office of US Secy of State would have been good enough to elect as President of the US.....but what do I know.

@15, "...We're tailspinning even further into a squalid Dickensian dystopia..."
Easy enough to understand if you realize that America isn't about the American Dream......it's about slavery in forms that people don't recognize as slavery. It's all about the Benjamins.

@10 & @20, Riiiiiight. Kill men. That's really going to convince people & get them on your side. "Organize with discipline & protest wisely" is wasted on you.

@28, Nice to see that someone here has a brain.

37

Many commenters are suggesting that "the court is coming is coming for contraception, same sex marriage, and gay rights next." I disagree with this assessment, and I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is- how about a $500 bet, donations payable to the charity of the winner's choice? Any takers?
I think it is worthwhile to note that Republican politicians have loved Roe V. Wade in secret, because it allowed them to play to the hardcore of the party base while not paying any electoral price. They could be as anti-abortion as possible, but while Roe held, their new restrictions provoked more backlash, enabling them to become out of step with the electorate while paying no price in backlash to the laws. Needless to say, this state of affairs will no longer hold. All of a sudden, their laws have electoral consequences. This may or may not change what extreme positions they will be willing to hold, it will be interesting to see what will happen now that their stances matter again.

38

@32. Ah yes, a tendies joke from an uncle neckbeard named Eldenring really hits home. I'm sounding the alarm. The only death by firing squad should be the Supreme Court shitbags who penned this travesty.

39

During Senate confirmation hearings, every Supreme Court nominee for the last 25 years was asked if "Roe" was "settled law," and, in their sworn testimony under oath, every one of them said it was. Therefore, the path forward is simple and obvious:

"... in any declaration, certificate, verification, or statement under penalty of perjury as permitted under section 1746 of title 28, United States Code, willfully subscribes as true any material matter which he does not believe to be true; is guilty of perjury and shall, except as otherwise expressly provided by law, be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both."

I'm sure everyone here preaching personal responsibility will agree the authors of "Dobbs" all belong in jail, correct?

40

@37 that’s what you assholes said about Roe v Wade.

But. Okay. I’ll take that bet? Depending.

What’s your time line and terms?

They will attempt it with in the decade. We both know you won’t pay out on that timeline.

So If you’re going to play some cherry picking game that it has to be some immediate SCOTUS decision then go fuck your self.

They will likely do it by death from a thousand cuts on the state level. Which is already happening.

So. If more than eight states in the next five years restrict contraception and roll back gay marriage, I win.

Otherwise. Go fuck yourself.

42

37 you clearly didn't read the ruling, specifically Clarence Thomas' remarks stating those very things.

Until this is rectified, every single Republican is an enemy of the state and every person with a penis trying to impregnate every person with a uterus is a clear and present danger.

Republicans claim they don't want government up in their business? Well the government is up in everyone's business now. And they are coming for all of us. A vote for a Republican is a vote for death.

15 years ago I got sick in Seattle and ended up being diagnosed with a non-fatal, slow progressing form of ALS. If only I had had straight up ALS I would have died 15-17 years ago never having had to live through the shit show of Trump, COVID, or the repeal of everyone's rights (other than white people with penises and white people without penises who support them).

This country has made its decision. It's nothing but a long haul slog to the end now.

Thought I'd drop in to see if Slog is still plagued with trolls and racists. Sure enough, I was correct.

Sorry to hear about abortion but everyone knew this was coming. Fascist gonna fascist. They're not even close from being done of course. Ultimate goal: Dissolve all government and turn over all control to corporations. They're nearly there too, just 3 state legislatures away.

It'll be interesting to see about 15-20 years from now in all the conservative states when all these kids grow up and turn to crime when they don't have anything to lose in a world where nobody wants them. The fascists have sown the wind...

Maybe I'll check in again in a year or so. Well, if we still have a free press that is.

46

@40 Thank you! I agree with your terms, but I also would have accepted a decade. If more than eight states in the next five years restrict contraception and roll back gay marriage- and the Supreme Court lets those laws stand - I agree that you win, and I will pay the $500 to a charity of your choice. If we hit let’s say August 1 2027 and that has not happened- then I win and you have to give $500 to the Against Malaria Foundation. Are we agreed?

@42 I did read Clarence Thomas’s statement in his assent, but I don’t agree with him, and the stances by the majority conservatives lead me to believe that they also disagree with Thomas. Kavanaugh et al maintained that this decision only applied to Roe, Thomas disagreed. Now, maybe I’m really silly for taking Kavanaugh at his word, instead of Thomas- but that’s why I’m offering the bet. I should be punished if I take Kavanaugh at his word and I’m wrong.

Back when Roe was "settled law," according to the lying felons who now form the majority of our Supreme Court, the pro-Back-Alley Butchery crowd dreamed of an America "where abortion is legal, but nobody can get one." So now, we'll build an America where abortion bans are legal, but cannot be meaningfully enforced.

I was a volunteer at Naral Pro-Choice Washington when we started the Abortion Access Network, and as the Stranger notes elsewhere, Washington state's political leaders are paying to expand it. Now we'll make it nationwide. Make the coat-hanger crowd watch in their impotently helpless rage, as young women travel with impunity to Washington (and other states) to have safe, legal abortions. We'll pay for all of them.

I'm surprised the Matthew Hale references are still there in Alito's final draft. Thought sure he'd take those out after all the attention they got. Apparently it's impossible to argue against legal abortion without citing a witch burner and marital rape apologist.

49

@45: You toss around 'racist' but yet there aren't any racist comments on Slog. Certainly not in this thread.

50

"Y'all are hilarious. Thanks for all that. I can always use a good laugh."

Yeah. It's real hilarious when 50% of the citizens of a nation lose their rights.

51

"@40 Thank you! I agree with your terms, but I also would have accepted a decade. No. You will pay the $500 to me. I will pay the $500 to you. Then we are agreed.

And I'm already winning.

52

@37 Contraception next? Most likely not. Unless one accepts the entirety of Catholic doctrine wholesale (which few U.S. Catholics do), the cognitive dissonance involved in opposing both abortion and birth control is just too great. Some pols may try to make hay of the issue, but I doubt there'll be any actual bans (except for those particular methods that some claim are abortion-equivalent).

Same-sex sexual relations? Most likely not. Most conservatives don't like to talk about that subject at all.

But marriage equality? I'd say there's at least an even chance this issue comes back into play. The animus toward same-sex marriage remains strong within both evangelicalism and the more secular nationalist right, whose adherents are currently taking out their rage on what they perceive as less-sympathetic targets, i.e., drag queens and trans girl athletes. But this ruling (especially Thomas's concurrence) will very likely give new momentum to a political effort to "return the issue to the states." Within a decade, unless the far right loses its majority, it's a good bet that the SCOTUS will have reversed Obergefell and at least a dozen states will have banned same-sex marriage. But I personally don't bet in favor of outcomes I don't want to see happen, so no thanks on your proposition.

53

BTW all Stare Decisis precedents are now invalidated and written in the opinion handed down today:

“In future cases, we should reconsider all of this court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell,” Thomas wrote in his concurring opinion.

And in case anyone is iffy on the precedents.

Griswold v. Connecticut (protects access to contraception)
Lawrence v. Texas (ruled that punishment for same-sex relationships was unconstitutional)
Obergefell v. Hodges (legalized same-sex marriage)

They are clearly aiming to impose their will on contraception and gay rights. But if not it will the best $500 I ever spent.

55

@49, Lol yeah, take it from Raindrop's lofty vantage point up his own yinyang that the only racist on Slog is Charles Mudede.

57

@52 I find this post as perplexing as it is naive.

IUD's are contraception. They are already discussing legislation restricting it in Idaho, Louisiana, Missouri, Tennessee, and a couple other states. AS well as Plan B. Which is contraception.

"Most conservatives don't like to talk about that subject at all."

What? You must be either suffering from dementia. Republican members of congress have spent the last five years making stump speeches saying homosexuality is synonymous with "grooming." It's literally their major culture war talking point (Besides vilifying trans people). It's ALL they talk about.

Gay rights same sex marriage is already under attack and has been since forever.

Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Wisconsin do not have explicit protections for gay marriage or really much for gay rights.

If Obergefell v. Hodges get overturned that's it.

58

@54 Sorry, you came to the wrong place. We can't fix you. But it's a beautiful afternoon...perhaps you'll feel better after some LARPing.

59

@52 Oops sorry I mess-read your last paragraph. I thought is said you did NOT think they were going after Obergefell v. Hodges. Sorry. Disregard #57.

60

@56 It was a 6-3 decision was it not?

Having one more liberal on the court would've been nice. But a 5-4 would have still passed it.

62

@57 On cultural issues in particular there's generally a pretty big gap between even the most fervent political rhetoric and what politicians are actually willing to spend capital on legislating, and I don't think contraception in its less-controversial forms or the legality of same-sex relations (as opposed to legal marriage) are likely to be legislated against in the near term. Maybe I'm wrong. But I suspect such laws would just be too unpopular to be viable even in the reddest states.

Hold close your balls, boys, you may not have them for very much longer - not that they've been of much use to you thus far...

69

@51 Sorry, Roger- I originally wrote "how about a $500 bet, donations payable to the charity of the winner's choice?" Usually people refuse to make bets unless it goes to charity, but I am fully willing to make the bet payable solely to the winner rather than a charity. Unless I'm misreading you. I applaud you for your "it will be the best $500 [you] ever spent line"- that is exactly how you should look at it.
If you have no further objections, we'll call it a bet and meet here again in August 2027?

70

Clarence Thomas has already filed his concurring opinion that the legalization of contraception and same sex marriage need to be overturned. But keep on believing they aren't coming for everyone. When the majority of the people in this country are relegated to subhumans and the only people who have rights are white people with penises, there will be a reckoning. The majority is not going back to the dark ages because a bunch of white men (and their subservient women) believe they are the only people who have a right to live and be free.

I refuse to accept that everyone with a uterus in this country is a subhuman cum dumpster that must give birth to every sperm that fertilized an egg because conservative assholes believe they have a right to regulate other people's bodies.

71

@70, yeah, but that's in character for Thomas. He frequently writes solo dissents that all the other conservatives justices ignore because he's too wacky even for them.

72

Abortion Ruling
Poses New Questions About
How Far Supreme Court Will Go

For his part, Justice Kavanaugh echoed and emphasized Justice Alito’s claim that the court’s decision to overrule precedents about abortion does not amount to overruling precedents about contraception and interracial or same-sex marriage, “and does not threaten or cast doubt on those precedents.”

The dissenting justices expressed disbelief at Justices Alito’s and Kavanaugh’s attempts to distinguish abortion from precedents about matters like contraception and same-sex intimacy and marriage.

The bottom line, they wrote, was that the reasoning about the 14th Amendment and 1868 was the same for that entire constellation of rulings.

“One of two things must be true,” they wrote. “Either the majority does not really believe in its own reasoning. Or if it does, all rights that have no history stretching back to the mid-19th century are insecure.

Either the mass of the majority’s opinion is hypocrisy, or additional constitutional rights are under threat. It is one or the other.”

@60 Actually the presence of one more reasonable justice would have saved Roe, though not the viability rule. The vote was 6-3 for the plaintiff (Dobbs), but only 5-4 to overturn Roe/Casey entirely. (Roberts didn't sign the majority opinion, writing separately that he concurred only with the judgment for the plaintiff.) His would have been the controlling opinion with one less extremist on the court.

Fascists In Our Midst

Supreme Court rulings, including the overturning of Roe v. Wade, herald the ascendancy of Christian fascism in the United States.

The Supreme Court is relentlessly funding and empowering Christian fascism. It not only overturned Roe v. Wade, ending a constitutional right to an abortion, but ruled on June 21 that Maine may not exclude religious schools from a state tuition program.

It has ruled that a Montana state program to support private schools must include religious schools. It ruled that a 40-foot cross could remain on state property in suburban Maryland.

It upheld the Trump administration regulation allowing employers to deny birth control coverage to female employees on religious grounds.

It ruled that employment discrimination laws do not apply to teachers at religious schools. It ruled that a Catholic social services agency in Philadelphia could ignore city rules and refuse to screen same-sex couples applying to take in foster children.

It neutered the 1965 Voting Rights Act. It watered down laws allowing workers to combat sexual and racial harassment in court. It reversed century-old campaign finance restrictions to permit corporations, private groups and oligarchs to spend unlimited funds on elections, a system of legalized bribery, in Citizens United v Federal Election Commission.
