The notion that a state attorney general should dictate how a business disperses its profits should send chills down the spine of every freedom loving American. And this clown wants to be our governor. Ferguson is bad news.

2

@2 I’m honestly surprised the SC actually ruled against him. They are usually lockstep. Maybe there is still hope to avoid allowing the legislature to back door an income tax. They should be taking that up soon.

3

Hey Ron DeSantis: People who get a COVID booster are probably more likely to take a COVID test when sick, hence the “correlation” between boosters and infections.

5

I can't figure out the MAGA Death Cult end game here?

DeSantis is boosted. So are all the leading party MAGA Death Cultists. So are all the Fox News personalities. DeSantis is going to literally kill off his base with his anti-vax nonsense. He doesn't believe his own nonsense since it's a 180 from his going around selling the vaccines to Florida voters earlier last year.

I honestly can't figure out why they want to do this? Are they really this stupid?

To debunk his idiotic claims is absurdly easy. FI The antivax obsession with "myocarditis" is bunk. All you have to do is look just a few simple numbers.

First over 12.7 BILLION doses of the vaccine have been administered globally. THAT'S BILLION. A staggering number. That is more than the 8 billion humans on the entire planet. These anitvaxers simply do not comprehend how much 12 billion is in use cases and how epidemiological models work with that much data.

These lunatics have claimed anywhere from 3-20% of the vaccinated will get myocarditis complications. The reported numbers of deaths are in the fractions of tenths of a percent. After 12.7 BILLION does administered you would see tens of MILLIONS of people dropping dead from myocarditis. But that is not happening. Anywhere. It's mathematically and probabilistically impossible.

They attribute this to the scary "spike protein" supposedly in the vaccine. But that's not how the vaccines work. They have pieces of the proteins that then encourage cells to make the corresponding "spike protein" to block the cells binding sites from the virus.

The Antivaxers ignore of course the actual live "spike protein" in the god damned virus itself enters human cells and stays in the human body for weeks or months longer and at higher concentrations during infection than with the vaccine.

They find scary words they do not understand. Spike. Gain of function. Myocarditis. And repeat them and repeat them until the fear mongering becomes a mantra mind virus in itself.

The fact that Covid19 CAUSES myocarditis and cardiac damage at orders of magnitude higher rate is utterly ignored.

And we know for a fact that vaccinated get covid at a lower rate than the unvaccinated. For the simple reason that vaccinated populations are infectious for shorter periods. Vaccinated are more likely to stay home when symptomatic. And the body clears the virus faster if vaccinated.

These are facts. So why are the MAGA Death Cult so bound and determined to kill their own? DO they think that voter suppression will make up for the predictable deaths in their over 65 base?

I can't make sense of it.

7

@4: No, because something unrelated to a definition of something does not change what it is.

15

This is the mainstream of the republican party, dipshit. A governor of a fucking state in the most powerful nation on earth. Literally the guy the GOP will likely nominate for president. And he is attacking vaccines! This is insane.

The official position of the GOP is now anti-vaccine. This propaganda will kill thousand of Americans. That's a little more severe than "contrarian."

Having such an unpleasant person as Bill Gates do more for the poor in this world than writers at the Stranger and their amen corner here ever will (and we’re talking by MANY orders of magnitude) must really hurt. You guys and CM Sawant really need to throw a pity party for yourselves.

Gosh
remember when you had the choice of eight, nine, ten different grocery stores – each with its own kind of brand and ambience? Here in LA there was Thrifty, Ralphs, Hughes (my personal favorite), Alpha Beta, Vons, The Boys, Gelsons, and others. Now, there’s essentially Albertsons, Kroger, and Walmart. Same thing has happened to banking. I also miss the middle-sized independent grocers we use to have. What happened to those? (An aside: There was one such market on Santa Monica Blvd. in West Hollywood that I used to frequent [Sun Foods?]. Ran into Jacqueline Bisset there one Saturday afternoon. She was wearing a blue denim work shirt tucked into white capris, sleeves rolled to mid-forearm, demur bracelet, subtle gold necklace, little or no make-up, flats, and she looked like a million bucks. One of my brushes-with-greatness there. The other was with Greg Morris from “Mission: Impossible.”)

People in other parts of the world say that I should stop my bitching, that I don’t even know how much they have to pay for food. And that’s probably true. Nevertheless, I still feel my bowels loosen when I see an $8 gallon of milk or a $7 bag of salad greens. I want farmers and other small growers to earn a decent living. It’s super-hard work. And I know they can’t make it charging what industrial farms charge, but I can’t help but believe that the lack of competition in the grocery industry spells trouble and higher than necessary prices in the long run. Additionally, I’ve been told by people in that business that it isn’t the grocer that’s making the killing. It’s the middleman, the wholesaler. That may not be true anymore now that we have the BIG THREE (soon maybe to be the big two).

I don’t know who else there is to oversee homes and centers for troubled or at-risk young people other than the state or federal governments, but I imagine those agencies are truly overburdened trying to keep up. And occasionally, although it seems more often than that, one slips through the cracks. Stories like the one about Secret Harbor depress the shit out of me. So counterproductive. It's the murder of trust. That's why the stories of predatory priests are tales of real-life horror. BTW, maybe places for refuge shouldn’t have the word “secret” in their name. Sort of in the same vein, today a center in South LA for troubled kids that offered food and recreation and, I assume, counseling, got shot up by a couple of boys who thought it’d be a great idea to bring handguns into the mix. Sigh.

Many people here just hate working for Disney. Apparently, they’re mean and they’re tight with dough. Disney is loaded with temps. Extras don’t like working a Disney production. Just a bad rep all around town. So different from when Walt and Roy ran the place. Now, I’ve never been wildly enthusiastic about Disney Studios or much of its product, but employees there used to worship Walt and his memory, and what was produced was a source of pride for everyone. Look at some of the production values of the old “Wonderful World of Color” productions. The Disney Touch, they called it. That’s gone now. It's a cold corporation with bitter employees.

25

The concept that these are "tech layoffs" is just that, a concept.

it's really just Rank and Yank, but done on an annual basis, so it can be disguised in countries like Canada Australia Japan EU India where you're not supposed to be able to do stuff like that.

Much ado about nothing.

@4:

Irrespective of the underaged and trafficked thing (which is totally disgusting), I know screwing rich guys is as old as the hills. And the choices out there are limitless if you are a multi-billionare. So many women over 18 would be so willing and all over you..Bill Gates? Holy shit. Daddy, buy me a Gulfstream.

But the thought of intimacy with Bill Gates? It requires a burlap sack and plenty, plenty good drugs.

28

So no news on SLOG about the death of Van Conner? Seriously?

When you and CM Sawant hold your pity party, to whine about how no one respects your lack of accomplishments, you should invite other folks who share your use of the term, “Slick Willie.” CM Sawant can wow ‘em with her tales of bitter persistence in campaigning against another Clinton, and you can all agree on how much you hate the liberal Dems. (I mean, commiserating with your fellow Clinton-haters would beat the loneliness of constantly losing to us liberals here, wouldn’t it?) You could discover how much more you all have in common!

Using prisoners for labor without paying them minimum wage is slavery. Prisons rake in BILLIONS in profit. Believing prisoners can't be paid for their labor is just as absurd as believing all of the companies are being forced to lay off tens of thousands of employees when they have raked in record profits during the pandemic. Slavery was outlawed and ever since people have had to fight tooth and nail to get paid for their labor. Our federal government truly believes people should be able to live on $7.25/hr while people in Congress stuff their pockets with illegal money because (and this is a direct quote) they can't be expected to live on their six figure salaries. This country, if it taxed corporations and the wealthy the way they should be taxed (simply their fair fucking share) AND DIDN'T SPEND NEARLY ONE TRILLION DOLLARS ON THE MILITARY AND ANOTHER TRILLION ON POLICING could literally house, feed, clothe, educate, provide health care to every single person in the country AND clean up the land, water, and air it continues to pollute to such an extent is literally causing the next extinction event.

Bored much? You do know that FOX TeeVee causes brain damage, right?

@28 xina: That is sad news. Rest in peace, Screaming Trees bassist Van Conner. 55 is too soon to go.
My condolences to surviving family, loved ones (JamieK @34 included) who knew Conner.
and @35 xina: I share your frustrations and concerns.

@30 kristofarian: Indeed, MacKenzie Scott has a heart, a brain, and a conscience. Jeff Bezos has an insatiably gluttonous ego, one big, Trump's-butt-ugly space dildo, and a truly bizarre fixation on his testicles. There's an exponentially glaring difference.

37

@27, @29, and @33: All kidding aside, yes, I am well aware of Clivus multrum compostable toilets, invented in 1939 by Swedish engineer Rikard Lindstrom to alleviate polluting the Baltic Sea. Clivus multrum toilets were first manufactured in the U.S. in 1973.
I couldn't resist the barb. :)
