Saying Food Not Bombs’ name is “old fashioned” makes you sound ignorant- they’ve been around since the 80’s but I would hardly call them old fashioned - they’ve been doing food justice work since before your parents were born.

I had BetterHelp pegged the instant I heard of it. People's data will be leaked or sold and then leaked. Along with 23&Me, so-called "smart" home devices, personal health monitors and pretty much all of social media (don't forget the "dating" apps), all these platforms exist to farm your personal data for profit, and function to build a panopticon state. Which, after democracy dies, will use your complacent preference for convenience over personal privacy against you. See you in the gulags!

Beef, pork, chicken and poultry are all considered meat.
As far as the history of why - irrespective of religious reasons, eating some fish (instead of always meat with the meal) and occasional fasting are both shown to be healthy practices.

We have a law here in California that, while it doesn’t ban companies from selling your information, makes it mandatory for businesses to ask and the customer to agree to sharing personal info. If they don’t ask you and if you don't agree to it, you can take them to the cleaners. Online you almost always get a box to check that says, “Do not sale my personal information,” if you are a California resident. It’s good because it doesn’t bury permission within a user’s agreement. Still, you have to be very careful. Some nationally known sites (like Angi or AARP) won’t even talk to you unless they get a name, an e-mail address, and/or a phone number. I understand some charities like ASPCA need any funding source they can find, but you have to ask people if it’s OK. Sheesh.

Man, pack that woman up and send her ass to wherever TB patients go to isolate and get well. You don’t get to say, “No, I’m going to spread tuberculosis.” The world is so arse-over-tit these days. Ever sense we learned of the tuberculin bacilli, the treatment has been rest, drugs (when they became available), and ISOLATION. You didn’t get a choice then. You shouldn’t now. A lot of self-absorbed shit out there, huh?

Unh-unh. No, sister girl. You want an abortion? You need to go to the closet and grab that rusty coat hanger. And afterwards, I’d be happy to fly you to the hospital on my private jet, but I can’t because I’m going to the Archbishop’s house for standing rib roast and 200-year-old cognac. See ya.

So, Nordstrom and Target. High and low end. Hmm. That huge store in Vancouver that previously was a Sears Canada and before that Vancouver’s flagship Eaton’s will now sit empty. Who now needs a space that big? Canada has Holt-Renfrew and the Great Canadian Superstore serving both ends of the shopping spectrum. Maybe there’s just a touch of anti-Americanism? Wal-Mart is functioning very well in Canada. So, too, is McDonalds, but have you ever noticed both corporations altered the logo for Canada to de-Americanize them? Wal-Mart dropped the star, and McDonalds added a tiny maple leaf to the M. Anyway, kind of surprised. I thought everyone loved Nordstrom.

Honey Hole: Probably a rent issue. Everything like this seems to be about leases these days. Small places in Manhattan, that have been there for decades, are having to close up because the landlord wants to develop or increase rent exponentially. The closure could be a health department violation, but those are usually news. I never went there, but I have friends who start foaming at the mouth at the mention of a Honey Hole sandwich.

I thought rich Southern families like the Murdaughs died with Tennessee Williams. “What’s you gonna do with that thar rifle out here in tha dawg kennel, Big Daddy?” Shiver.

Great. Another horror story concerning two undocumented Central Americans. That ought to help. Campbell’s Cream of Eagle soup. So sorry, you majestic wonder.

I don’t get what’s so fascinating or funny about a poisoned bear. Could someone help me with that?

Seattle Workers Strike Back Launch Rally
Saturday, March 4, 2023
12:00 PM 2:00 PM

TOMORROW.

University of Washington Kane Hall room 130

guess who's back:
"The time is here. Starting this weekend, we are launching Workers Strike Back with rallies and meetings across the country!

Workers desperately need a real raise, good union jobs, an end to racism, sexism, and all oppression, quality affordable housing and free healthcare for all, and a new political party that actually represents the interests of working people.

To make those demands a reality, we need to build a broad, independent movement of workers and young people that’s capable of standing up to the bosses and their political servants. To build that movement, we need you to become a part of it.

Since announcing the creation of Workers Strike Back a little over a month ago, our movement has already helped win the nation’s first ban on caste discrimination, and launched a national campaign against Amazon’s union busting, including a job defense campaign for Amazon worker Edward Clarke who was targeted by management for his efforts to build a union at his job at the KCVG Air Hub. This is just the beginning."

@22 et al. Many of the so-called "bums" you see lined up at a soup kitchen are disabled vets, retirees and low-income workers who do have a place to live but no money left after paying the landlord. (And as of this month they're taking a huge hit to their food stamp allotment, just so the federal government can pretend the pandemic is over.) Would you cut these people off along with the unhoused? If not, what criteria would you use to separate the two groups?

39

@4 kristofarian: PLEASE--I hope you're kidding! A woman's body autonomy is HER choice, not the "entitled" decision of some RepubliKKKan mismanaged KKKorporation or Orange Turd appointed SCROTUS neofascist.

@30 Bauhaus I: Are you among Catholics or rabidly of some traditionally misogynist "faith" afraid of women being able to make their own personal health decisions? I wish you and all bass-ackwards male chauvinist pigs and RWNJs like you could get impregnated against your will, by rape, incest, etc. and be forced to give birth--even at your life's risk!!! Pull your head out of six feet of snow, Mr. So Cal, and get a CLUE!
Picture yourself suddenly being unable to get necessary medication to remain healthy, or avoid detrimental consequences otherwise against your ability to stop or control, all because heartless special interest groups who don't give a shit about you stubbornly "insist" such Constitutional rights should be made "illegal".
Do you use Viagra? Is it covered in your insurance? Imagine suddenly having that yanked off the shelves at Rite Aid, Walgreen's, and elsewhere. Take your rusty coat hanger and shove it up your ass, and I hope you suddenly need a tetanus shot you "can't get".
And here I thought I liked you. Well, Uhh-uhh. Not anymore now that you've revealed your true ugly sexist colors. You officially lost me, dude. See ya.

@31 Catalina Vel-DuRay: YES!!!! Catalina for the WIN!!!

@38 CKathes: +1 Agreed. Spot on and so well said.

41

@1 Insane MAGAturd: Will you help raise all the children orphaned to mothers forced to give birth against their will who died in labor since the Orange Turd appointed neofascists in the Extreme Court overturned Roe, without once considering the detrimental consequences for women and girls nationwide? I didn't think so.
Oh, I get it---you'll wait until the next generation turns 17, put XM7 rifles in their hands, and make 'em go faht fer their Free Dumbs because Mr. KKKorporate RepubliKKKan neofascist in the expensive suit said so.
Fuck you, you dickless, pathetic trolling MAGA incel. Our bodies are our choices--NOT yours!!

@31 Catalina Vel-DuRay: I could not have said it any better. That my lifesaving bilateral hysterectomy was done at so eerily an opportune time leaves me reeling now. And the procedure had been done at the height of COVID-19 restrictions, with no problems. I consider myself among the lucky ones. If I still needed to have the operation I probably wouldn't be able to have it done now.
I honestly don't know which U.S. human female demographic group I feel sorrier for, adolescent girls and women, currently between the ages of 15 and 45 in their reproductive years--or little girls from birth to their preteens who have yet to experience their first menstrual period. What kind of future do they have, post Roe?
If only men could get forcibly impregnated and made to face losing their lives in a delivery room. The abortion clinics would outnumber the MAGAchurche$ and Ga$ $tation$ COMBINED.

42

@37 bertha: +1 Agreed.

@40: STFU. You're a MAN, and an uneducated, woefully ignorant dolt at that. Your preachy, bullshit "pro-fetus" word salad spewing is glaring proof that you are clueless about the human female anatomy. Incel much? You have no say in a woman's right to her own autonomy. End of discussion. PERIOD.

43

@32 STII: Thank you for being among the sane male commenters.

44

@14 kristofarian re @4: Okay. I was getting worried. Evidently I missed your sarcasm. Thank you for the clarification.

45

@40 Oh for fuck's sake, you are a tedious asshole. No one, NO ONE, ever 'chooses' to have a third term abortion out of convenience. It's because something has gone horribly wrong, and that medical decision may be the best for the patient. Not that it's any of your fucking business, you asshole.

46

@39: Oh no, Auntie. You have me all wrong. I was arrempting comedic sarcasm. My opinion on abortion is if it were up to me, there'd be a special Hoover attachment and the settings on the vaccuum would be bare floor, carpet, and uterus. You'll very rarely find me in the company of someone who follows the boys in Rome because I always wonder why anyone would want to be a member of that club even with all the childhood brainwashing, but in fact, you can substitue Joel Osteen or any of those grifters for Archbishop in my postiong..

47

Raindrop, unclutch your pearls, listen to Our Dear drewl2, and try thinking for once in your life instead of being such a simp.

The right wing fantasy is that women who get abortions are all vain selfish people. Why would a vain and selfish person put herself through six+ months of pregnancy and all the effects on her body, just to get an abortion? Like most conservative notions, it makes no sense. It's no wonder you people are alway getting taken advantage of.

Late term abortions happen because something went terribly wrong. Not because it's bikini season. They're tragic, because of all the hopes and dreams that die with the fetus. Baby fetishists don't get that, because they are emotionally stunted.

50

@50 -- who's
Arguing O-
therwise?

@49 Playing the victim card again, are you? Because, obviously, it is always about perceived slights against you isn't it? Otherwise, I have no idea how you could you could come up with that conclusion.

54

Raindrop dear, you conservatives are masters of projection. Everything in your "movement" is about being a victim. You do that to cultivate the stupid people by telling them that they do not have to take personal responsibility for their pathetic lives.

Seattle Times Re-
moves Dilbert Comic
Gives Him Op-Ed Column

Following a racist tirade by Dilbert creator Scott Adams, The Seattle Times announced this week that it would be removing the Dilbert comic from its pages effective immediately and instead grant the character a recurring Op-Ed column in the paper.

“We at the Times are appalled by Scott’s behavior, and we want to make it crystal clear that this disgusting, divisive rhetoric has no place in our comic spread. Our op-ed section, on the other hand …,” said Seattle Times Publisher and CEO Frank Blethen. “I, for one, can’t wait to find out what Dilbert thinks about homeless encampment sweeps.”

Twitter
can’t protect you
from trolls any more, insiders say

Twitter insiders have told the BBC that the company is no longer able to protect users from trolling, state-co-ordinated disinformation and child sexual exploitation, following lay-offs and changes under owner Elon Musk.

Exclusive academic data plus testimony from Twitter users backs up their allegations, suggesting hate is thriving under Mr Musk's leadership, with trolls emboldened, harassment intensifying and a spike in accounts following misogynistic and abusive profiles.

Current and former employees of the company tell BBC Panorama that features intended to protect Twitter users from trolling and harassment are proving difficult to maintain, amid what they describe as a chaotic working environment in which Mr Musk is shadowed by bodyguards at all times. I've spoken to dozens, with several going on the record for the first time.

The former head of content design says everyone on her team - which created safety measures such as nudge buttons - has been sacked. She later resigned. I

@60 kristofarian: Apparently The Seattle Times wasn't 100% sincere about pulling Dilbert entirely from its comic strip lineup. Dilbert was on Page 1 of today's Sunday Funnies, in defiantly livid color. Maybe the Blethens allotted Scott Adams one last laugh before plunging the strip into media darkness.

@61 & @62 Raindrop, I'm speechless. Now I'm going to have to watch "What's Up Doc?" (from 1972) and sing along with Barbra Streisand! Thank you for the tribute!

@63 kristofarian: Holy shit. Like I need any additional reasons to avoid Twitter! Thanks for the dire warning.
Alongside KKKorporate RepubliKKKans, The Tech Age is out to get us---in more ways than one!

65

@64: “Apparently The Seattle Times wasn't 100% sincere about pulling Dilbert entirely from its comic strip lineup. Dilbert was on Page 1 of today's Sunday Funnies…”

Due to technical issues with newspaper manufacture and assembly, daily comic strips and Sunday comic strips have long been managed on different schedules, with the Sunday strips being sold and printed months ahead of the daily strips. Hence, the Times could not immediately move or remove any Sunday comic strip; such alterations may take weeks or months, depending upon the Times’ contracts with syndicates and printers.

@58: If anyone is “itching for a fight,” it is Kristofarian, by tediously repeating “news” already long since published here.

Yes, CM Sawant has refused to admit she cannot get re-elected anymore; her repeated, unhelpful antics have utterly exhausted even the vast tolerance of voters in District 3. Therefore, she had to create another reason she’s leaving, instead of the door-spanking which her fellow citizens would likely administer if she dared stick around. Kristofarian, of course, gullibly swallows and regurgitates her self-servingly distractive nonsense as if it matters to anyone. Then he throws an f-bomb because he got criticism instead of praise for his tedious copypasta. Boo-hoo.

I have every confidence Sawant’s actions after she leaves office will empower workers to exactly the same degree as her actions in office saved the Showbox.

67

@66: What part of his copypasta @35 was new?

68

@65 & @67: WOW, tensy. You're in a chipper mood. Did you run over a small child or something?

2. It's Monday morning, and....you've had so much caffeine already you're suddenly about to crap your pants?
3. It's Monday morning, and...you've got diarrhea, but the water got shut off in your building so now you can't flush (oh, DAMN!!)?
4. It's Monday morning, and....you've just got this insanely inexplicable urge to needlessly shit all over someone?

@70 kristofarian, re @69: Which of my four tensy theories do you think nails it?
I'd have to go with Diarrhea and No Dice for $1,000, Alex, on SLOG Jeopardy.

73

@58: “Anyone who so doggedly keeps score on who said what weeks, months, years (!!) ago has to be dying of sheer boredom.”

Auntie — thanks for noticing Kristofarian referred to me as ‘union boy,’ complete with scare quotes (!) @56. (He seems to think you missed it, because he did it AGAIN @70. Wow.) He stewed over my self-description (for how many “weeks, months, years”?)
and still couldn’t get past having an actual union man tell him we unionized workers neither need nor want his or Sawant’s “empowerment” of us.

Again, thanks for your support. Kristofarian indeed might be “dying of sheer boredom,” but he’s certainly entertaining to the rest of us.

74

@73: Um, tensy dear, I was referring to YOU in @58, @69, and @72. I am in full agreement with kristofarian as to why you're so frequently keyed up in the SLOG comment threads. It's as if you'd fight your own mother. Obviously you're here merely to argue to the point of starting WWIII. It's all too easy for me to picture Mahatma Gandhi becoming a gun crazed homicidal maniac after spending ten minutes with you. WTF, dude?
I really do think you need a relaxing soak in a nice hot tub. It works wonders for relieving stress and tension. When was the last time you went outside for some fresh air and took a nice walk? 77

@75 kristofarian: You're most welcome.
Here's hoping tensy went for a nice hot soak.

78

@76: It’s not merely unionized workers who don’t need “empowerment” from you and Sawant; nobody needs your “empowerment,” because you don’t ever actually empower anyone.

For her long and mostly pointless occupation of the District 3 seat, CM Sawant has loudly assured us she was “building a ‘movement’”. As your copypasta inadvertently admits, she failed completely at this, and so she is now loudly talking about organizing workers from scratch. (As I wrote, no one who watched her “save the Showbox” should show the least bit of surprise at such a result from her.) If she couldn’t accomplish any of this with the power of City Hall behind her, then why should anyone believe she’ll accomplish anything now?

Workers who need empowering should contact we workers who’ve already done it; we have union officials, organizers, and an entire Labor Council, all of whom should be happy to help. Relying on someone who has already failed them simply wastes workers’ time.

79

fifteen bucks an Hour tentsy.
what have YOU done?

80

@79: Once a victim of propaganda, always a victim of propaganda. CM Sawant and Socialist Alternative played catch-up with the $15/hour movement, eventually agreeing to water it down to a phased-introduction with a tip credit — two capitulations to the bosses not made by us voters who had enacted Washington state’s higher minimum wage in the ‘90s. (Seattle’s voters got so impatient with our politicians, CM Sawant included, that we filed an Initiative for $15 ourselves.) Of course, she continued using her slogan, “$15 Now!” long after she’d completely sold it out.

Have you any examples from a more recent term of hers? ‘Cause that foot-dragging example was from her first.

81

@3 Lairdo and @17 the incrediblek: Was the pulled comment @1 possibly Bazinga by any chance?
That doofus really does have bats in his belfry. His fearless leader of the usual MAGA trolls gives him a doggy treat every time he spews routinely senseless garbage.

82

@16 djFrankieFox: +1 Agreed.

83

@79: Union organizing, supporting strikers on the line, counting ballots in our union’s hall — you know, the stuff CM Sawant gets photographed pretending to do. You? (Please do recall “posting comments at the Stranger” does not count as “doing” anything, no matter how poorly said comments are written.)

@74: How could you have been referring to ME, when you haven’t given me doing a single example of the behavior you criticized, and Kristofarian has behaved that way right in front of you? That makes no sense at all.

Now, all you have to do is criticize him for behaving in exactly the manner you described, and we can all be done with this. Thanks in advance!

84

@83: Wow. Anything for the last word, huh, tensy? Now you're so desperate for a heated argument you're trying to tell the rest of us what to say? Are you lonely and dying of boredom? Did your cable go out? Oh, well, you could always go hang out at raindrop's. The two of you could stay up late and compare scorecards. Bonus points for the longest nuclear screamfest, sent into extra innings! Film update at 11!
Take a hot soak. You'll feel better. Maybe then you wouldn't feel so tensy. You're welcome in advance!

85

@84: “…you're trying to tell the rest of us what to say?”

Look, @58, you claimed, without any quote, citation, url, or other attempt at proof of any kind, that I was a commenter who “doggedly keeps score on who said what weeks, months, years (!!) ago,” as if paying attention to another person’s words is somehow a bad thing in a conversation. @57, Kristofarian had already snidely referred to me as ‘union boy,’ (scare quotes in his original), which he repeated (again with the scare quotes) @70. These were his disparaging references to my prior claims, made “weeks, months, years (!!) ago,” to my having been a proud union member. Now, if merely recalling “who said what weeks, months, years (!!) ago” is bad, then repeatedly doing so in an intentionally derogatory manner is at least equally bad. Yet you have not indicated the slightest displeasure with Kristofarian’s behavior, wherein he “doggedly keeps score on who said what weeks, months, years (!!) ago”. Do you care about such behavior or not? That’s my honest question. If you don’t actually care, then we can just drop the matter entirely, leaving everyone to wonder why you even bothered to raise it in the first place.

86

@85: lol Okay--tensy dear, now I'm biting the insides of my cheeks, trying very hard to keep from laughing my ass off. Your hysterical spewing has reached the volcanic eruption stage prior to a total nuclear meltdown. Have you been hanging out with Jack Nicholson and / or Adam Sandler lately (ever see Anger Management)? Are you and Bazinga roommates? One thing you both have in common is that neither of you can stop chasing your tail. Is it loneliness or sheer boredom that drives your excessive blathering? Your obsession with keeping score on everything anyone ever said on SLOG indicates you suffer from severe insomnia. I honestly think you're reading far too deeply into things.
Maybe cut back on the caffeine and try a nice hot soak in a warm tub? Play some soft, relaxing music.
Have a glass of red wine, and try it with dark chocolate, blueberries, almonds, and sea salt. Antioxidants are good for relieving hypertension and high blood pressure. You're welcome in advance.

@79: Sorry, kris. I tried to calm tensy down. Now I can't shake off the song, 19th Nervous Breakdown (1966) by the Rolling Stones. Griz needs another comedy film night with plenty of red wine, popcorn, and dark chocolate with almonds and sea salt. It's time again for Robin Williams in Good Morning, Vietnam (1987).

Wishing all a good night.

@86: You comment on other commenters’ posts all of the time here, yet you’re here obsessed with condemning me for supposedly doing that very thing. Despite my repeatedly asking you for examples of what I did to offend you, you haven’t given any, just attacked me more for asking. You’re acting every inch the part of a bullying harasser, and you seem to have some obsession with me and my family life, and so it’s probably healthier for both of us if I stop feeding your unhealthy behaviors and attitudes. I’ll continue to participate in general conversations here as I see fit, but anything you write about me personally will be ignored.
