Everyone in this city knows that is complete horse shit. Absolutely nothing has changed with SPD. Officials are just tired of dealing with this decade-long kabuki. Time to put it to bed and pretend it was money and effort well spent.
Let's first see the fucking audit of both the state and county governments before we freely give them even more money to blow on stupid shit, shall we? My taxes keep going up and shit keeps getting worse... something's fishy.

@2: And the total lack of curiosity towards why SPD (mis)behaves in the ways it does will also continue. After the âdefundâ debacle, the Council simply wandered away from asking any questions about the police. Why was the East Precinct abandoned to the CHOP? Why do police routinely attack protesters in downtown, Belltown, and Capitol Hill, whilst politely escorting larger demonstrations in other parts of town? Nobody seems to care, not even the Council Members who claim to care about SPDâs behaviors.
I would think the activists would be happy about the possible removal of the consent decree. After all that was one of the reasons the SCC couldn't follow through on their commitment to defund the SPD by 50% back in 2020. The pesky judge stepped in and said no
The consent decree also ended up overruling the SCC ordinance prohibiting certain crowd control measures. So with the consent decree out of the way the SCC won't have that barrier/excuse anymore for not following through on activist demands.
@11: Yes, but thereâs currently a race between Council Members and voters as to which group will remove all activist-friendly Council Members first. ;-)
It's going to get ugly. MAGAt folks foaming at the mouth. Hard to breathe already. Audrey Hale, no friend to the trans community... Only explanation is that (s)he was so blinded by the rage of being bullied that she could not see that.
.
An explanation for all the Microsoft lay offs would be nice... you know, journalism.
@12 I assume you've been reading along at the ridiculous candidates TS has been promoting to fill the void left by the current ideologues sitting on the dais? So far it seems like most of the candidates running are even worse than the current council which is a very low bar. The filing deadline will be coming up soon so hoping we see some serious candidates join the race in April.
There have been 2,840+ mass shooters over the last 5 years give or take. 3 of them have been trans.
Why is is so suddenly important the the "left" media â whatever that even means â suddenly label the gender identification of shooters.
You did not demand or even note this unknown cabal of left media did not note "Cis" the last 2,837 times some Cis gendered lunatic shot a bunch of people.
So they "buried" that the vast majority of lunatic gun nuts were Cis, didn't they. But you are just drooling with straw man anticipation they will when it's a trans person who had all too easy access to a killing arsenal.
Now that's curious.
Almost like you have agenda to smear Trans people. When in fact trans people are barely participating in this all too American Cis Male pastime of murdering children with guns.
Are you worried they are muscling in on your thing?
@7 - I used to just flash my badge, which was even more fun. But they took it away when I retired. :(
If you haven't seen the Nashville PD bodycam footage of their response to the shooter, it is well worth watching, if only to demonstrate how the police should respond to active shooters. It's a perfect, textbook display of how cops have been trained to respond to active shooters (particularly in schools, but could be anywhere) since not long after Columbine. I've been through the training several times, and I retired in 2011. The Nashville PD footage is like watching a video of that training.
There may be criticism here of shooting her again once she was down, but that is also training. Active shooters are the only instance when we were trained to keep shooting until the suspect was clearly not able to move so much as a muscle anymore. The theory is these whack-jobs will do anything to keep killing, even if able when badly wounded.
Anyway, I'm really, really proud of these guys. Some young officers are just natural leaders in a crisis, and the lead officer in this incident with the AR seems to be just such an officer.
@25 The far left, especially Slog, also hates to report when homeless people commit crimes, especially violent crimes. See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.
Are you not aware that both the state and the county are audited annually? It's required by law in WA, and just about every government institution or agency with a budget in the rest of the country has an annual audit, too.
Seems the Nashville shooter was under going treatment for emotional disturbance. Would have been nice to have a red flag law in place to keep the legally purchased guns stored safely away until whatever was going on had been resolved.
@25 I kinda don't red your posts past the first eye roll. SO throwing the word "narrative" around does't make anything you say have more importance.
And building these false dichotomies won't make your purported "curiosity" anything more than a fig leaf for a coy little ax you want to grind. You would find a way to grind that ax regardless of how The Stranger or any other so-called "left" outlet reported this or any story. We both know it.
It is your raison d'ĂȘtre.
You never really answered the question. Because you are incapable of that kind of retrospective insight into yourself. But let me answer for you.
We all know the default for a mass shooter is straight and male. So you do not NEED that clarified. The only thing important for you is something, anything, you can use to distract or derail.
Regardless of what little media conspiracy straw man you concoct in your head, the issue is not the gender presentation of the person who pulled the trigger. But rather that the trigger of an all-too-easy to acquire gun was pulled. And is pulled thousands of times per year, often slaughtering children in the process.
You and all the other bottom feeders on this board are desperate to derail any and all attention from that central fact. Because it is the only fact that matters.
And dealing with that fact is the only solution to the problem.
It should come as no surprise to me (but it still does) that American companies, who have benefited greatly by the American consumer, will, instead of paying their share of taxes, go to Herculean efforts and expense to move somewhere (Ireland, for instance) to avoid them completely. Those taxes which they try to avoid are what builds the bridges and the highways that lead to their plants and headquarters and provides the roads and tracks necessary to deliver their inventory to market. It helps educate its workforce. It frequently allows the government to buy the products it produces. It's so fucking anti-American for them to stick their tongues out - with thumbs in ears and fingers wiggling - at DC.
My solution to end that treacherous move probably wouldnât survive the legal system, but here it is: You and your corporation may move anywhere you see fit, but if you leave this country, you lose the American market. You will not be able to sell your goods here. You lose that privilege and advantage.
Didnât know about the Fisher guy. I, of course, do know about Fisher Investments with its Sunday morning âwe arenât here to fuck anyone; we just want to make your retirement flushâ ad campaign â which I should have known was bullshit. All ads are, really. Didnât know they were based in Washington state either. You know what? They want to move to Texas? Let âem go. Plenty of low expectation employees there who think unions are unpatriotic. Go on, nowâŠgit! Enjoy the pollution, the stockyards, and the beauty pageants.
I hate a cheat. More so, an ungrateful cheat who never remembers who brung âem to the party (or who paid for the dress).
As enjoyable as it might be to "own" some conservative investment banker, I'm not really jumping for joy at the prospect of increasing my own tax burden.
About the Nashville tragedy - I've read that the satanic shit who did this to school children identified as "trans-gender." I'm waiting now, after a week or so of grief, for the Tennessee legislature to grab this and run with it. Stay tuned. It's depressing when you can count on a government to find a new low.
@19: My hopeful speculation says the serious candidates are lining up support and waiting until closer to the deadline to file. The only advantage to early filing is more time to raise funds, but the current candidates wonât raise much money, and will mostly vanish when someone serious files for each seat.
The disadvantage of early filing is more time for opposition research and mud-slingers to apply their talents. Given that the only âlessonâ the Stranger seems to have âlearnedâ from the November 2021 elections is they didnât hate hard enough or often enough on Harrell, Nelson and especially Davison, why should a serious candidate allow the Stranger to start now?
@41 - I wouldnât cheer on anyoneâs death but Iâm certainly not going to shed any tears over the fact that the cops ended up killing the shooter. I canât imagine many would.
@37 I can see your point about waiting to postpone the inevitable muck slinging from TS and various activist groups about being a right wing, corporate toady, bootlicker etc etc. I hope you're correct that some serious candidates are going to jump in though. We'll see in the next 6-8 weeks.
Remember we don't want too many good candidates, just one per district.
Think back to the District 6 Primary in 2019. A ton of candidates, many very serious. Unfortunately there were so many candidates that Strauss and Willis came in first and second based on name recognition alone. Leaving Sergio Garcia in third place and out of the General.
We have Tanya Woo in District two and Pete Hanning in both worthy candidates against two terrible incumbents.
@41 - Meh, cuffing suspects who were clearly incapacitated or no longer with us wasn't something I ever saw done with Dallas PD. If suspect was wounded/injured and still ambulatory, then sure. Never saw or even heard of badly wounded/injured or apparently deceased suspect suddenly attack armed officers covering them once they themselves had been disarmed. I'm not sure where that cuffing habit started, but it is almost always unnecessary with clearly incapacitated suspects. Plus, it pisses off family and witnesses...almost always for no real reason.
The intel the teacher provided is somewhat useful, as it gives you a clue about where best to make entry. But you still have to do a quick-clear of every open room you pass, as the suspect can move up or downstairs and throughout the school in a matter of just seconds. There could also be more than one shooter; remember Columbine. But you would still keep the teacher's intel back of mind.
Once shots are heard, move fast straight to them. You just have to leave unsecured areas behind you then. If 3 or more officers in group, one will keep watch to rear. Suspect could always pop up there from intersecting corridors, or one could emerge to rear while you're engaging other one...if there are 2 suspects. Once suspect is down, you still gotta clear rest of building, which is what I'm sure they did in Nashville.
These officers did this so perfectly, I honestly felt as if I was watching video of the training exercises we do. We use actual schools (after kids are gone) with simunitions for officers and suspects. Simunitions travel about 600 fps and make you take the training seriously. I had one tear a chunk out of my calf and leave a little, bloody hole! We wear heavy face masks to prevent injury there.
This training started a year or two after Columbine, and we got refreshers every couple of years. Most all departments have had it by now. The main issue in Uvalde...in my own opinion...is that you had a bunch of school district officers, who are usually very "Type B" and indecisive. They had the training, but they were too unsure of themselves to use it. Fear played a part, too. Most young cops in cities are super eager, aggressive and very "Type A" and not afraid of too much. I remember watching Uvalde and thinking, "Man, this would never happen in Dallas!" ...or Nashville.
You want that bold aggressiveness in these sort of situations. The problem the police face nowadays is they have that mentality too often, including in cases where the opposite is needed. Fix that and add greater accountability for misconduct, and you solve a LOT of problems facing LE today.
JESUS, like I really need any further well justified reasons not to ever open a Twitter account.
@28 and @45 Morty: Thank you for your insight on law enforcement. When will senseless tragedies, like multiple death shootings, in schools and public places (shopping malls, concert venues, etc.) ever end?
@34 and @36 Bauhaus I: +2 Agreed and seconded. Well said.
@47 - Yeah, I was around. I remember the Miami shoot-out in only a broad sense. Still, we never adopted that practice. Policy based on a one-in-million instance is often not the best policy. If the suspect is clearly incapacitated AND disarmed (the Miami shooter apparently wasn't), there really is no need to cuff. We were trained to disarm as fast as possible...as done here.
"You want that bold aggressiveness in these sort of situations. The problem the police face nowadays is they have that mentality too often, including in cases where the opposite is needed.
Fix that and add greater accountability for misconduct, and you solve a LOT of problems facing LE today."

@ Anthropromise Me -- I have no idea (and don't really care) if it's politically correct or not re: '(s)he'; it just makes sense. Every trans person has a story, and that seems to sum up the story succinctly, honoring both identity identification and the inescapability of biological origins. The reverse I suppose would be 's(he)'.
Sweating the different labels has always seemed counter to the intention of accepting people for who they are in a non-judgemental way.
Like your example -
if you put "(S)he" would you be labeled as anti-trans bigot
I would hope not...but knee jerk judgements like that are all too common these days by the very same people who are ultimately advocating for non-judgemental behavior...
@52 - At least where I worked, good cops "ratted out" bad cops far often than people think. Almost 1/2 of our IAD investigations were generated from internal sources...mostly supervisors, but still. The problem...and this is why I harp on accountability...was that our administration consistently refused to do much about such complaints.
I cannot tell you how many times I and my Lieutenant/Deputy Chief recommended termination on someone, someone who we knew very well, only to have the Chief of Police (who doesn't know them at all) reject our recommendation and give the officer a few days off (Suspension) instead! It was maddening, and it was something mid-level supervisors complained about often. Now, I don't know if that was unique to Dallas or happens much elsewhere, but I know that some things I've read over the years convinces me it does indeed happen in at least some other cities.
I don't know if Seattle is one of those cities or not.
"Sweating the different labels has always seemed counter to the intention of accepting people for who they are in a non-judgemental way."
When visual cues are obvious as to how they present themselves as male or female, sure. But a lot of the time with the androgynous, non-binary, gender-f#ck look, it's a crap-shoot as to how they want to be gendered - and boy do they love their war stores over how they were misgendered.

Behold the damage âdefundâ has done to police reform. The Stranger has contributed mightily to this damage, continuing with pushing âdefundâ long after Seattleâs voters rejected it. Even when a majority of citizens in unincorporated areas of King County rejected police alternatives because they were concerned it would lead to defunding, the Stranger intentionally misrepresented the survey results to say the opposite! (https://www.thestranger.com/slog/2022/04/28/71999670/rigorous-survey-finds-king-county-wants-police-alternatives/comments)
You made the very first comment in that thread. You blissfully swallowed the Strangerâs propaganda whole, snottily agreed that âdefundâ should be accomplished by COVID, and stated the Stranger was not only correct, but obviously so. You left it to the rest of us to read the Strangerâs coverage skeptically, compare it to the actual survey results, and show how the Stranger was flat-out lying. To put it very, very charitably, you were absolutely of no help at all in this dialog.
Want to help in police reform? Donât be such a dupe and mouthpiece for the Strangerâs witless anti-reform efforts.

I haven't forgotten how the consent decree interfered with the council's ability to stop police from attacking people. https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/seattle-police-oversight-agencies-reject-total-ban-on-crowd-control-weapons-passed-by-city-council/
Re: Gender identity of shooter
I think it is a mistake to completely write off a potential link. While there are many reasons that someone could go to the dark place of shooting, complete ostracization by society is one of them. It is unfortunately a normal part of life that people compete for status, a domineering concept that gives them power over others, and one way to obtain status is to otherize people who could potentially compete with you. This otherization has a material impact on the victim's ability to empathize with the people around them. This is not sufficient to cause violence, but it does push in that direction. When it persistently happens across society, violence becomes inevitable even if the chance that any individual instance results in violence is low.
Any society based on domination makes violence inevitable.
There is no equivalence between a trans person being unable to cope with the pain of their treatment and a white nationalist raging about society's movement towards a more just future. But there are parallels in the way that they lash out. If the supremacist can come to understand how harmful their actions are, that we truly are one people, then working with an organization like Life After Hate https://www.lifeafterhate.org/about-us/ would be a far more just outcome than throwing them in a cage for the rest of their life.
@56: Youâre welcome, but I donât see anything in there which might help prevent you from again being a dupe and mouthpiece for anti-police-reform propaganda.
In fact, your hand-waving refusal to recognize the folly of your previous comment implies youâll continue to be a dupe and mouthpiece for contra-reform propaganda:

which do not change the content
but hopefully Do correct and clairfy:
"... what they want is clear: More than half* of the written comments from people surveyed expressed a desire to have an unarmed behavioral health professional available to respond to emergencies."
@61: The point was the Stranger claiming a majority wanted police alternatives, when a majority did NOT want police alternatives, BECAUSE they feared police alternatives would mean defunding of the police. (They wanted BOTH more police AND police alternatives, in that order, but the Stranger falsely presented it as an either/or.) That shows just some of the damage âdefundâ has done to the cause of police reform. (If youâd read all of the comments, not just your own, you mightâve seen that.)
Thanks again for quoting your cruel attempt at humor about police attrition via COVID. It shows nicely that you just didnât get how âdefundâ was itself a huge problem, rather than part of any solution.
Again, the best thing you could do for police-reform dialog is simply not get duped into repeating the Strangerâs obvious propaganda. Youâre welcome.
@59: "While there are many reasons that someone could go to the dark place of shooting, complete ostracization by society is one of them. "
The shooter wasn't "ostracized" by society. She was a functioning human being making a living on a daily basis until she made some very very bad choices. Rather, she was obsessed with her own victimhood. She bought multiple assault rifles. The equivalence between Audrey and a neo-Nazi shooter is their unquenchable thirst to ruminate in their victimhood. It gives them both a sense of power as they both avoid confronting their sociopathic and narcissistic personality disorders that are the source of their problems.
@66: Credibility? You canât even quote yourself properly. Hereâs your cruel attempt at deriving humor from the prospect of other human beings dying:
âno need to Defund the Po-po

@67 raindrop Accepting the world as you find it and using the tools available to manage your emotional state is good practical advice for coping with a merciless world full of self-centered intelligent actors. If everybody followed this advice effectively, the world would know significantly less violence.
But it is not enough. That advice only allows us to leave the world as we found it. If our ancestors left the world as they found it, then today I might be owned as another's legal property. I might have been burned at the stake as a witch. I might have died as a prepubescent child in some industrial accident repairing a machine that adults are to big to fit inside of. None of these things happened in my life, in part because our ancestors were not content to leave the world as they found it. The only way that I can repay that debt is to continue the work.
Critiques of power are not an excuse for anything. But no matter how good the practical advice is, no matter how faithfully everybody tries to follow it, there are too many people creating too many opportunities for it to fail. If we ignore the critiques of power, then violence is inevitable. This is not an excuse for violence. It is an observation of how the world works.
@72, @73: Oh look, I can continue quoting your own words better than you do. (How do I accomplish this? You just donât understand.)
From the end of your first comment in that thread:
âAnd: "... have an

The answer was in the survey, but the Stranger twisted the surveyâs results to bury that answer. You can read the full explanation in the rest of that thread (itâs news until you read it!), and possibly understand how the very act of you asking the question reveals just how badly the Stranger punked you with propaganda. Enjoy!
(Oh, and thanks again for quoting my humorous statement about cruelty. If thatâs the strongest evidence youâve got of my being a cruel person, then Iâm probably not one. Please feel free to keep re-stating my lack of cruelty, and do recall you need to continue including the emoji to do so.)

Look, if you want to pose and preen as someone who Always Gets It, whose chronic and demonstrably superior wisdom endows him with the authority to lecture pretty much everyone else here, all of the time, then youâd bloody well better be not such an easy mark yourself. Yet just recently, the Stranger, a drug dealer, and soon-to-be-ex-CM Sawant have all easily gulled you into vocally supporting the outright frauds they were selling. You even repeated the cult-like lie about how the last made $15/hour possible, when OTHER citizens had actually done all of the hard work to make $15/hour not merely possible, but a reality. Thatâs some serious, long-term gullibility youâve got going there. (And also quite insulting to the citizens of SeaTac, whoâd actually done the thing she has only ever talked about.)
Instead of maybe wondering why you keep on getting getting duped, you lash out in vindictive rage at anyone kind enough to inform you of these frauds. Whereâs your equal (or greater) ire for the fraudsters who gulled you in the first place? Why are they not your targets? Why have you a knife only for persons who read with careful skepticism?

https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/federal-judge-to-seattle-city-council-tread-carefully-with-efforts-to-defund-police-or-risk-violating-consent-decree/

"Just curious."
Again, over the last five years less than .105633803% of mass shootings have been committed by known trans killers.
But 100% were committed with a gun a lunatic should not have been allowed to possess.
The curiosity here is why the discussion has to be anything but the 100% of the far too easy to acquire killing weapons.
But that's SLOG now. A cesspool of shut-in shitbags with the worst possible takes and bottom feeding ax grinding obsessions.
@4 (theincrediblek)
@29 wrong. I turn them in all the time. While you radical extremist far right activists say "oh guns are our god" instead.
@43.

Re: consent decree

@78: What, do I constantly call everyone who disagrees with me in the slightest â almost every one of them actually a liberal, BTW â a fascist, or fascist sympathizer, or dupe of a fascist? Is that the horribly intolerable âToxicityâ youâre now here whining about?
