It should be named the "Gulf of Denmark". Also, isn't there a bar called "Blast Balls" somewhere on Capitol Hill?

2

"Red, White, and Blueland."

So, Russia? Yes, please, take Greenland so we can strip mine it and exacerbate climate change to the nth degree such that we will live to see the collapse of the planet into a WALL-E-esque cataclysm of shit with rich assholes jettisoning themselves into space with all the oil they dug up and burned for the right to leave this planet.

Musk is a myopic shitbag who has no business trying to buy the government to turn it into his plaything. This is real life and requires the highest standards of professionalism and integrity, not convicted felons and thugs and a bunch of fuckheads trying to tell us what the government is when we've been pledging allegiance to the flag all our lives for a reason. Musk needs his goddamn ass kicked shamefully handled and to be tossed into the snow and stripped of all his assets and have them sold to the lowest bidder. You complete and utter pond scum trash. Eat shit and die [figuratively] Elon Musk and Donald Trump, and all your cabinet of fuckhead toadies who are completely illegitimate to uphold the principles of this nation.

America is named after Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian. Why are we splitting hairs over which body of water is named after which colonial power from Europe? And we're deporting people because they speak Spanish, that is, from Spain, a colonial language. This is the most petty and stupid waste of time that doesn't mean anything but a test of fealty to see how high people will jump when they say so. They're trying to weed out all but the true believers so they can take full control of all governmental resources to lock everybody up for profit. It's the war on terror all over again, but instead of 'terrorist' they've switched to DEI and 'woke' and 'illegals' and 'trans' and all who are othered. This is some bullshit and relies on demoralization to accomplish, but you have to look inside your life and remember what you've learned about what this country stands for besides its name which isn't even of its own origin. If it is to be an independent country, it must uphold its own principles that were paid for in the blood and treasure of our nation for generations to keep us free of evil tyrants like those who stand in power now and are demolishing their legacy for imaginary cryptocurrency doge profits. It's all a big joke to them, especially those like Musk who aren't real Americans and will never understand the meaning of this country because he seeks to become its antithesis. I've seen enough of this shit. We need elected officials who are going to stand up for the truth and fight back, not a bunch of bought out fucks like Mayor Eric Adams who is in bed with Trump. These corrupt gangsters will tear down everything we fought for in WW2 in order to return fascism to power. Why is Trump talking about seizing Gaza and Greenland and Panama? What do fascists do? They invariably seize territory and go to war. And all the mechanisms of the government are shifting in that direction. If you want to remain free and a true American as you have had the privilege of inheriting from your descendants, you must be ready to pick up the torch and stand up for your rights by making your voice known, if not in the vote, then in the voice of your life.

The prediction that J6ers will be back in jail is the easiest win you'll have all year, given that several are already headed back to prison after varying flavors of asshattery over the last couple of years. At least one has already been shot and killed by police during a traffic stop.

5

Glad to see social housing passing.
Always good to see voters approve tax increases that increase the cost of housing even further.
If history is an indicator, the housing units will be run down and crime ridden within a couple of years
Seattle’s version of Cabrini-Green or Pruitt Igoe

6

@4
So the J6 people will be just like the recidivists here in King County who get released with little or no bail.

7

I’m old enough to remember when releasing prisoners who went on to commit more crimes would end a politician’s career but Trump will be fine because the violent criminals he released are white. At the macro level this would be worth at least 100 Willie Hortons if republicans weren’t virulently racist.

@5 the fact you know the names of the two infamous public housing failures actually proves the opposite of your point. Most public housing is successful and good, and the isolated examples that didn't work are notorious. But beyond that, this isn't about public housing it's a completely different concept that has been implemented successfully in multiple other places around the world. The tax is inconvenient for people who make upward of a million dollars a year though I'll give you that.

Thanks for the Dick song.... I have added it to my dick song playlist, such as---among others: Mickey Avalon--My Dick (Dicks like Jesus)
Surfbort, Dicks in Space
Puscifer, Cuntry Boner
Flight of the Concords, Too Many Dicks
Feel free to add to this dick-topian playlist if it pleases your memmmmbers... (did you feeel the mmmmmmm?) LICK!!!!

11

@5, How does increasing the number of housing units make housing more expensive?

12

@5 Kudos to you for even thinking they'll get something built and this won't up like the monorail with a bunch of money pissed down the drain and nothing to show for it.

13

It is a travesty that Mariah Carey will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame before the long-overdue recognition of earlier genre-defining Rock artists such as Barry Manilow, Air Supply, and the Osmonds.

14

Shit, I forgot King Missile, "Detachable Penis" and "Dick"

15

@13 To be fair, the Osmonds are only a little bit rock 'n roll.

16

@11: It doesn't necessarily, but the increased supply doesn't mean more homeless can afford first, last, and security deposit, not to mention those who need to get off fentanyl and meth.

17

@11
How would building housing subsidized by the government increase housing costs?
Well, unless there are contractors willing to build for free, it’s going to take money. Where does the money come from for social housing?
Taxes on the people who own property.

18

@16, Do you have any evidence to support this argument that housing market is “not necessarily” subject to the law of supply and demand? I’m not asking for more conjecture, I want to know if this assertion is based on data or if it’s just something people say because they don’t like the idea of taxpayer-funded housing.

Also did anyone who wrote/sponsored/endorsed the bill suggest that it would be affordable for homeless people? There are a lot of people who are gainfully employed / not living on the streets who are priced out of the market who will benefit from below-market rate housing.

19

@18: You have my permission to remove the word "necessarily" in comment @16 from your thought process.

20

@17 It's not subsidized housing, it's public housing. And Prop 1A is a tax on income, not property. Maybe read the legislation.

21

@1:

I'm now calling it "The Gulf of Erikson", given that the Vikings arrived on the continent a good 500 years before either Columbus or Amerigo Vespucci.

@12:

The money spent on the monorail wasn't "wasted" just because asshats such as yourself forced the voters to approve it FOUR FUCKING TIMES over eight years before you FINALLY got your win and then declared, "no do-overs!" even though you got multiple do-overs yourselves.

@13:

Don't forget Bread.

22

Grimes doesn't know where her kid is.

I'd love to read her contract with Melon Husk. Does she even have custody?

23

@5: you know jack about affordable housing in Seattle. there are myriad types and multiple providers, public and private, all over the city, and none of them are run down and crime ridden.

@16: affordable housing isn't only about the homeless population, FFS.

24

@3: You make great points but Trump's 'Gulf of America' fiasco is, is yet another of his volleys making news and you can't help it coming across as "splitting hairs" in the larger scheme of things. The media and press have never been that circumspect, nor should they.

@23: Sorry you parsed it that way. I didn't mean it as the whole.

25

17, I understand that rental costs will be contained by taxes and not free labor but you said it would increase the cost of housing across the board and that does not follow, even if it were funded by a property tax hike (it isn’t).

You don’t like public housing and that’s certainly an opinion many people share but you don’t get to just make up reasons for not liking it. You don’t need to give any reason at all but if you do you should be intellectually honest about it.

26

@7 "I’m old enough to remember when releasing /black/ prisoners who went on to commit more crimes would end a politician’s career..."

FTFY

27

on the way to buy groceries in north Seattle yesterday I saw 2 or 3 different people sleeping under blankets & sleeping bags on the ground or on pavement in the cold. One person had their shoes off.
(Housing?? Schmousing??)(Healthcare? Wealthcare!!)
To all these well-to-do folks/freaks sniveling about being taxed for their success, all condolences!

28

I actually prefer Greenland. But I'm down with the Gulf of America. What a patriotic name.

Silly voters, passing that social housing proposition. I know it will fail and it will be fun watching it happen. Luckily, I live in the burbs and will not be subject to paying for such stupidity. At least not until the state legislature goes down the same dumb path.

31

@20 if it's being subsidized by taxpayers its subsidized housing. It may be below market rate for the people living there but someone is paying the difference so it's not subject to the actual dynamics of supply and demand. Building more housing will in theory lower demand and price however what we have seen in Seattle over the year is the newer housing comes at the expense of older housing which has a much lower price because its much older. Depending on where this housing is built and what is replaces we can then determine whether it lowers the prices in the city. We have built over 46K units of housing between 2018 and 2022 according to the Seattle city website, has that dramatic increase led to lower prices? No, because the demand continues to far outpace supply and the supply being built is more costly than the what was there before.

@21 the money spent on the monorail was wasted because there is no monorail. that is the definition of wasted.

32

@28: you don't live in Seattle, yet you have opinions Seattle's politics? how surprising.

33

@31 "if it's being subsidized by taxpayers its subsidized housing. It may be below market rate for the people living there but someone is paying the difference"

The market rate occupants subsidize the below-market occupants. Why is that you and Saxman feel the need to share opinions on a subject you plainly know nothing about?

34

@22: I read up on the situation and Grimes is fighting him for custody. Melon Husk is, unsurprisingly, being a dick. she doesn't have X, it seems, and didn't see him for 5 months in 2024.

35

@33 if its self sustaining why do they need an annual revenue source? They could bond against the projects projected revenue just like a private developer. I could see a one time start up fund needed and in that case they could then pay back over time but this continues in perpetuity.

36

Result of 1A? A lot of shuffling of executives from the Seattle Office to the Bellevue or Redmond Office. They as a practical matter WFH most of the time anyway, so no biggie. Once you do the paper relocation, they are no longer on the books for this tax.

37

Considering how badly we've polluted the Gulf of Mexico, it's probably appropriate that it be named after us. But taking our cues from an elderly incontinent drug addict with multiple felonies and diminished intellectual capacity is probably not the best idea.

So weird how people in this comment section think Feebs in Walls is racist, homophobic, etc. While I may not always agree with this person, they have always been respectable and factual (while most others who disagree with Feebs mostly resort to name-calling and over-generalizing).

Only for American versions, Phoebe dear. If you have a VPN and you log in from someplace in Europe, it's still Gulf of Mexico. They do put Gulf of America in parenthesis, but that's probably to help normal people understand what trump is babbling about.

46

@45: Sort of like how China insists that there is no such country as Taiwan (or Tibet!) and enforces this edict with major search engines. Yes, that's where we're at.
