"Israel, which does not allow foreign journalists into Gaza and which has targeted local reporters, has killed 237 journalists since the war started on 7 October 2023, according to Gaza’s government media office. The Committee to Protect Journalists said at least 186 journalists have been killed in the Gaza conflict. Israel denies deliberately targeting journalists."

Why doesn't Al Jazeera just release the hostages?

5

psst Pennsylvania is the "Keystone State." Colorado is the "Centennial State."

6

"Israel’s pattern of labelling journalists as militants without providing credible evidence raises serious questions about its intent and respect for press freedom."

That's backwards under civil rights and rule of law principles. The IDF does not have to prove that to attack.

The party alleging that attack was a war crime has to prove that the IDF had no evidence he was a combatant.

Innocent until proven guilty and the crime alleging party has the burden of proof.

Thirteen12 and Kristo, are you committed to above bedrock civil rights and rule of law principles?

7

@6

"The I[O]F

8

@6 Its crazy that even the people who are clearly intentionally trolling as trump supporters and republicans can't bring themselves to be as big of a piece of shit as you truly are on here every single day.

9

I'm fine with it. DC is really gritty with tagging, vandalizing, and killings - embarrassing for our nation's capital. Still ranked 3rd in highest murder rate.

10

Stupid question:

If you’re a journalist AND a terrorist, which should you list first on your CV?

11

@7, The RULES OF WAR you refer to expressly permit the killing of combatants, which this guy was, until and unless a prosecutor at a war crimes tribunal can prove that the IDF knew he wasn't.

The RULES OF WAR you refer to, expressly permit the killing of NON-COMBATANTS, provided a military target is being taken out. E.g. It's the standard practice of every military in the world with artillery and/or aircraft to send infantry forward to draw fire and expose enemy positions, and then call in artillery and/or bombs to flatten the revealed enemy position. 75% of combat casualties are by artillery and bombs, not infantry small arms.

If you happen to be a civilian in the apartment building from which enemy troops are firing (or even a nearby building) on the advancing infantry when the advancing troops artillery or bombs flatten the building, heaven help you.

That is the way it has always been under international law, and still remains. It's why non-combatant casualties are 10 times or more combatant casualties.

If you want to end non-combatant casualties in Gaza, Sudan, or Ukraine, its not via threat of war crimes tribunal. That has NEVER worked.

It's by ending combat. That means making one side, or both, suffer so much they sue for an armistice. It's a paradox that the most expeditious path to ending the violence, is much more of it, so one side or the other can't, or won't, continue with the violence.

What Elusis said. CO is
the Centennial State (1876).
PA is the Keystone state.

IN case you folks aren't students of History or War,
every war brings new tactics, many of which are
considered atrocities, as if there norms and morals
of killing other humans had such civilized means.

Most new wars have new techniques, new ways of
getting your way, and old definitions and tactics
don't mean what they used to. THis includes who
you might be fighting, and what they are willing
to do in a quest for domination (martyrdom?).

Newest of the new tactics in asymetric warfare
(when much smaller groups fight bigger groups):
taking civilian hostages, kidnapping children and
infants, killing the blossoming young-ers, small
flying machine invasions, and in the unique case
of Gaza being massively under Israeli control,
squeezing resources to the point of starving the
populace of food and water.
NONE of the WWII Tactics were war crimes until
Nuremburg, way later than the conflict. None of
the current ones will be either. I get it, it goes a
long way beyond 'sucks' and many MANY are
dying that shouldn't (Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, etc.).
Pretending you know what is going on, and that
you have a finger on the pulse on the conflict is
wishful thinking.
Trying to get it to stop is as idiotic as pretending
you understand how and why it started.
Please do get a grip on the fact that there are
MANY parts of reality you can not understand.
Don't pretend to.

13

I suppose it should surprise no one that one of main campaign objectives for Trump's DC occupation is overthrowing the Commanders, and restoring the older, racial slur name.

14

15

@12, "Trying to get it to stop is as idiotic as pretending
you understand how and why it started."

Less idiotic than pretending the threat of a war crimes tribunal will protect a non-combatant.

16

Our world is not "Climate ravaged". According to the National Weather Service, flooding is the most frequently occurring natural disaster in Wisconsin and according to WI DNR, Wisconsin has had at least one major flood in every decade since 1880 with 13 Presidential Disaster Declarations since 1990.

How can you confidently assert that international imports declining by 25% is bad for businesses or consumers? For instance, you have done absolutely no research to determine if businesses or consumers are buying alternate products or services that are produced in the USA.

The 9th Circuit already found Trump had the authority to deploy the National Guard in LA for the purpose of defending ICE officers. The guard has not participated in law enforcement activities so the Posse Comitatus argument is going nowhere. Expect another ruling in Trump's favor.

17

@14 only objects to starving and bombing people to death as long as some other group of taxpayers, outside the U.S., pays for those efforts. Note he didn't object to people starving and being bombed to death, only for their taxes paying for a tiny part of that.

You are not concerned about the welfare of Gazans, just for who pays for their misery and dying.

If you were concerned for Gazans you would be demanding the U.S., NATO, or a U.N. force start attacking Hamas, the IDF, or both, within Gaza until they surrendered, so that Gazans would no longer be in the crossfire.

NATO bombing the Serbs, not the threat of war crimes tribunals, saved the people of the Balkans. Were non-combatants killed by NATO bombing? Almost certainly. Were fewer non-combatants killed than if NATO hadn't intervened? Definitely.

18

I add my voice to those appealing to the Slog staff to fix "the Keystone state" blunder.

Isn't that yesteryear sticker in the picture an insult to the current new police chief and the entire department?

19

For anyone who doesn't want to read his multiple lengthy comments (probably everyone) Neale thinks me and kristo are too soft and we need to press the US to bomb the shit out of Israel. It's certainly a take.

20

My scrolling finger got very weak during kristo's absence. Gonna be tough to get my old scrolling strength back - but I'm up to the challenge.

21

"Seattle and King County, always a bit behind the times, didn't mirror that trend until last year. Now, this year, we're seeing 22 percent fewer homicides in the area, with 47 in King County by the end of June (compared to 61 last year). That's on track with the 20 percent dip in fatal violence across the board in 400 American cities. Additionally, in the country, and especially in our area, gun violence is down."

Perhaps the drop in crime in Seattle is attributable to the policies of Mayor Harrell, Council President Nelson, and City Attorney Davison.

Were there any major changes in Seattle that happened in January of 2024 that could contribute to the drop in crime rates?

Could it possibly be a result of the installation of a moderate majority city council that is not hostile to the idea of law enforcement or to the criminal justice system? A city council that fully endorsed the policies of Harrell, Nelson, and Davison.

Unfortunately it looks as though Seattle wants to elect a new mayor, city council member and city attorney who will protect criminals. Will anyone be surprised when crime rates rise in 2026 and 2027?

22

@20: Really? Kristofarian's unique style and clever prose spacing was dearly missed - even if you disagree.

Israel has a right to defend itself and it would appear that the only way to do it is to occupy gaza (and the west bank). Otherwise any peace is just a tempory pause in the missle barage. They need a buffer zone and since the Pal people don't seem to be in any hurry to get rid of Hamas maybe Israel can help them out a little!

28

@5 Elusis: Ah. Thank you for the clarification. I had a feeling something was off, state wise.

@6: STILL babbling, Mr. Magoo? Jesus, stop bingeing on FOX TeeVee and stale Twinkies before your brain completely turns to mush.

@12 Nuclear Marc: What I find most troublesome is the overwhelming number of senselessly damaging wars caused and prolonged by corrupt men in power throughout the course of history. Such warmongers, autocrats, authoritarians, dictators, and fascists (I.e.,: Julius Caesar, Attila the Hun, Maximilien Robespierre, Tsar Ivan the Terrible, Napoleon Bonaparte, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Emperor Hirohito, Idi Amin, Muammar Gaddafi, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. and Dubya Bush, Dick Cheney, Vladimir Putin, Benjamin Netanyahu, Kim Jung Un, Xi Jinping, Donald Trump, Pete Hegseth, The Taliban, Elon Musk, ad nauseum, just to name a few) rarely were and particularly now won't be satisfied until they own everyone and everything, and when their Church and State are one globally. They have all chosen to lead with violence, hatred, misogyny, racism, and chaos. Why do so many of them hate and fear women, especially those who of us who are well educated?
Is it truly a "fear of losing their hard on", as quoted by Jack Nicholson in The Witches of Eastwick (1987)?
War is costly and it is hell on Earth, displacing countless millions of innocent people. It is nothing to be proud of.

@20: Thanks for the reminder for me to scroll past your trolling rants, too, Jeebsy ol' boy.

@24 kristofarian: Babyback has his head so far up his ass I'm surprised he can see past his shit.
I am SO glad you're back, kristofarian! You were very greatly missed.
@26 kristofarian: Ol' Valvolini's already blinded by Felon Mu$k's Mein Trumpfist propaganda, and is just as batshit crazy. It wouldn't surprise me if his eyeballs went like those of the Nazis in Raiders of the Lost Ark, upon opening the Sacred Ark of the Covenant. At some point the rest of the world is going to say, "Fuck it!" and point all nukes at Der Gropenfuhrer's Divided Fascist Run Amok Police $TATE$ of KKKorruption.
My only comfort is that I didn't vote for this shit.
