"decided women who test negative for hepatitis B can decide whether to vaccinate their babies against the disease". So... either this is poorly written/researched or the implication is that at the momment women who test negative (or positive) can't opt out?

8

Cameras connected to the Internet in and around your house always seemed sketchy, but people putting them in their toilet and getting their poo data swiped by some government or marketing team or fetishists on the data markets is comical on top of it.

9

It’s been standard policy to vaccinate for HBV at birth because it has prevented millions of infections with a chronic, debilitating virus with no net negatives, antivax panic notwithstanding. The main goal is to prevent maternal to child transmission, and since we don’t have universal healthcare and not all mothers know their status, this is treated as a public health problem that can be addressed through a cheap and effective intervention for all newborns. It also prevents the infection later in life so there is a benefit for babies born to HBV-negative moms.

10

What sniff test does the color white need to pass?
What a ridiculous thing to get your scivvies in a twist over.

12

@10: I have had many good conversations here and on other platforms regarding fashion as a cultural indicator. For example hem lines rise during economic prosperity and lengthen during times of unrest.
There are current observations regarding the bleeding of color from home decor and fashion and what that reflects in our culture.
Look at how washed out many films and shows look. Look at the all white minimalist trends in home shows.
Look at the drab uniformity of countries under authoritarian regimes, from the Taliban now, to Mao in the past for example.
Color and embellishments has been coded as foreign or a class indicator while neutrals and uniformity are being coded as wealthy and higher status right now.
It’s all very interesting to observe

13

New Light Rail to Federal Way tomorrow! Can't wait!!!

14

@12: What do colored hair, nose rings, heavily tattooed, trends indicate in terms of prosperity and unrest? Maybe we don't have enough history for that.

FIFA’s graft is first rate - https://www.seattletimes.com/nation-world/nation/fifa-gives-president-donald-trump-a-peace-prize-in-a-departure-from-its-traditional-focus-on-sport/

Trump won’t do shit to disrupt the World Cup (FIFA has a long tradition of dealing with authoritarian douches).

Sad that one of the greatest sporting events in the world is run by such a corrupt organization but at least we’ll get out football come hell or high water.

16

@14: youth fashion is generally in opposition to establishment norms. You see that all the way back to the Middle Ages when young men started wearing their hoods as hats by putting the face hole on their heads and wrapping the excess fabric around the top their heads. It was met with outrage BUT eventually was co opted by the mainstream. Which is generally how that works. We see that today with fashion that moved from Hip Hop culture to mainstream fashion such as baggy jeans and super high end sneakers.
Even nose piercings are starting to move to more conservative spaces.
Clothing and design are anthropological data.

17

@13, Why would anyone want to go to Federal Way?

18

@16: Fascinating - thx.
@17: It is an odd name. Named that way because of the federally funded route 99. I suppose if it was named Weyerhaeusenburg you wouldn't have asked that question.

18

"The US has used war powers on 20 strikes on suspected drug smuggling boats and killed 80 people."

That is the elephant in the room we need to address.

Al Queda committed an indisputable act of war weaponizing civilian aircraft into missiles to kill nearly 2,000.

What if they had used the smuggled importation of opioids to kill that many instead? Is that smuggling an act or war? It has the same outcome.

What if they additionally used that smuggling to weaken the U.S. by disabling much of our workforce and reducing the economic output that we tax to pay for defending the country, by getting millions addicted? Is that an act of war or mere crime?

If we don't find some point to draw a line between war and mere criminality, the door is open for Trump, and any future C-in-C to use war powers in this way. As far as I can see we haven't drawn that line.

@Boatgeek, the reporting indicates military lawyers have made the case that this use of war power is lawful and in defense of the United States. You have pointed to a different former military lawyer, now teaching at the U.S. Naval Academy, that says the opposite. Where is the court ruling that says which legal expert is correct to address the elephant in the room?

19

@18, I ask the question, only partially tongue-in-cheek, because all the issues that The Stranger has raised in their annual complaints issue about Seattle, would apply 100 times over in Federal Way.

20

It’s Congressional Representative Adam Smith, not Sen. Adam Smith. And as much as the Stranger might not like a Washington State Congressman who is seen as hawkish, he’s standing up for rule of law in the face of Trump’s despotic military.
Let’s face it, a ranking Democrat from a more conservative state might do nothing but go along with killing in international waters. I am quite happy to have Adam Smith as my Representative.

21

33

@30: Eh, it’s possible to scroll past kristo’s stuff without reading it, but it really doesn’t matter either way, as he’s been posting and (sometimes full-quote) reposting the same things here for years.

In that time, bots with greater language skills than his have been developed and deployed. Not a high bar, of course, but another reason not to bother with kristo’s inferior versions.

34

"But wind alone can’t replace the benefits of industries like mining or the energy resources of coal and gas, said Republican state Sen. Forrest Mandeville, who lives in town. For one thing, wind doesn’t bring nearly as many jobs or pay as well. Outside of contractors and temporary construction jobs, the wind facilities in the county provide about a dozen or fewer full-time jobs each, he said."

And Seattle Progressives wonder why formerly blue Montana is now solidly Red. Blame blue Seattle's progressive choices.

https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/climate-lab/as-was-coal-ban-looms-montana-wind-fills-only-some-of-the-energy-gap/

35

20 years from now we will be hauling the turbine blades to a landfill or we will spend shitloads of energy to downcycle (not recycle) the material for other uses, and tons more energy to make and install the replacements.

The 17% rise in energy costs is just a down payment. We will need to spend hundreds of billions to create energy storage and grid upgrades (with the resulting strip mining of copper and rare earths at a rate of over 68 times what we do now).

That doesn't mean fossil fuels are necessarily the way to go in all cases going forward, but we need to count all the environmental, economic, and human costs when we decide. We aren't doing that.

@38: "Remember how boring it was those couple of months he was gone?"

Actually, I thought it was so wonderful, I've personally continued it.

If in search of a laugh, I can always go back to closed threads and skim his babble. Occasionally, he does produce something new, e.g. two months ago, he spewed incredibly caustic vitriol upon the death of his favorite war. It makes for both entertaining and edifying reading. As much of it was simply cribbed from others, it demonstrates nicely just how much kristo' (and the persons/places he mistakenly trusts as sources) hate the peace deal in Gaza. I take responsibility for Kristo. 20 years ago, shortly after his mother died, he found himself alone and unsupervised. I received a call from him to install a topless bar dance pole from a closed joint he liked to patronize, securing it in his cathedral ceiling foyer. My mates (Applejack and Soft Serve) installed it, then, per his wishes, converted it into the tallest bong in King County. Kristo would have these get little shindigs where he would toke up hard on the upper landing then come sliding down in his underwear and gently tea bag some stripper on the floor below. As the years went by, we returned to do increasingly bizarre "installations" in his home. The place started looking like a combination of a tawdry gay dance bar and a Thelmalite temple. It was good money but I always felt I was an enabler. Its cathartic to get this off my chest.

and speaking of
the End of the War!
and/or 'peace plans'
or 'ceasefire plans' or
other trumpfian flights
of pure fantasy, here's this:

Trump's Henchmen Keep Calling Their War Slut President A Peacemaker

The US State Department has renamed the US Institute of Peace the Donald J Trump Institute of Peace, proclaiming that it did so “to reflect the greatest dealmaker in our nation’s history.”

[huh. the same guy who
renamed the 'Department of
Defense' 'the War Department'? THAT Guy?]

“President Trump will be remembered by history as the President of Peace,” tweeted Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the announcement.

Earlier this year the president’s intelligence chief Tulsi Gabbard made a similar social media post, tweeting that “President Trump IS the President of Peace. He is ending bloodshed across the world and will deliver lasting peace in the Middle East.”

This would be the same President Trump who has bombed Somalia more times in the last year than presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama did in their combined twelve years in office.

The same President Trump who is bombing boats in the Caribbean and openly ramping up for a disastrous regime change military intervention in Venezuela at this very moment, with his Chairman of the Joint Chiefs declaring that Americans can expect a coming war “in our neighborhood”.

The same President Trump who has spent an ire year pouring weapons into the horrific US proxy war in Ukraine despite promising throughout his entire campaign to end the conflict on day one.

The same President Trump who helped Israel incinerate Gaza for months before suckering the world with a fake “ceasefire” deal which as of this writing has seen at least 373 Palestinians murdered by Israel in just two months since taking effect, while a nightmarish surveillance system is constructed around the survivors.

The same President Trump who risked a horrifying
escalation in the middle east by bombing Iran.

[I dunno, wormmy.
perhaps your highly
Celebrated 'the End of
the "War' on Palestinians!"

may Not be all you've
Cracked it up to be?]

The same President Trump who spent his entire first term advancing the longstanding agendas of warmongering DC swamp monsters by starving Venezuela, backing Saudi Arabia’s genocidal atrocities in Yemen, ramping up cold war escalations against Russia which paved the way to the conflict in Ukraine, imprisoning Julian Assange for exposing US war crimes, staging brutal regime change ops in Iran, occupying Syrian oil fields with the goal of facilitating regime change, assassinating General Soleimani, and expanding the US murder machine around the world.
