TS's treatment of the Minneapolis fraud story is breathtaking. The fraud is massive, pervasive, and inextricably bound with the political class. The best advice for TS on this topic is to plead for those facing trial to come to Seattle's newly "reimagined" Community Court. Erika Evans, daughter of a Black Panther sympathizer, promises to create a kind of Romper Room where no justice is restorative justice. Hell, lets bring in Maduro as well. Next time I'm at the downtown library I might run into Mike Walz with Nicolos doing community service trash pickup in orange vests.
@1: "Maduro doing community service trash pickup in orange vests."
You won't, because Maduro was arrested on drug charges. Drug charges now go through LEAD. LEAD would never make an offender wear an orange vest or perform community service. That wouldn't be conducive to the offender's healing! đ
The LEAD model is:
Arrest an offender for committing a crime.
Enroll the offender in LEAD.
Never again arrest the LEAD-enrolled offender for any other crime.
Point to the lack of subsequent arrests as proof that LEAD cures recidivism. đ¤Ł
This guy came into the system unemployed and unhoused, and was able to use the shelter, case management, and resources provided to become housed, employed, and pursue Community College training and education.
I will vote to tax myself to fund that outcome all day long. A revolving door between homelessness, dysfunction, petty crime, taking over public space for private use, and shelter, not so much.
@12: Just to be clear, are you saying that there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever that some in the Somali community have been participating in fraudulent child care claims?
@12: I think theyâve conflated the Somali and Somali-American frauds in nutrition and developmental services, which do indeed total hundreds of millions of dollars or more and for which dozens of defendants have already been charged, with these speculative Somali and Somali-American day care frauds, for which there is no evidence. đ
But they are âdirectionally correct,â in that Minnesotan officials spent years looking the other way when it comes to widespread fraud in the Somali community because they wanted to avoid any appearance of racism, and they thought being anti-racist was more important than being anti-fraud. đ Hence the undoing of Governor Walz đ
@12 there has already been convictions for fraud associated with food programs. That's a fact. So to say there is no fraud in MN is not accurate. The question is whether such fraud was also taking place in child care centers. That investigation is ongoing so we'll see.
@13: You mean all the ones in the main stream media, in podcasts, UK press, etc? Wow, my goodness gracious. What a revelation! Just curious then, is Maduro still in Venezuela? I don't know what to believe anymore.
"During the presidential campaign Walz was sold to the country as a kind of National Dad, a folksy, football-coaching totem of midwestern decency. When did anyone attack Palestine? The Palestinians have been violently stomping on rakes since 1947 while blaming everyone for their misfortune but themselves. đ If they'd quit trying to drive the Jews into the sea, they'd quit getting their asses kicked every couple of years, simple as that đ
I think I detect in @24 the first faint stirrings of Krisofarian's inevitable argument that the (((Zionists))) were secretly the ones to overthrow Nicolas Maduro. Tensorna predicted it yesterday, and I think he may have been right đ¤Ł

The Somali Fraud story sounds pretty overwrought to me, just a ripoff of that guy who was filming Planned Parenthood a few years back. Everyone knows Republicans are cheapskates who are into child molestation and racism. That's what horrible people do.
Note that when a dem, e.g. @31, lies, they always say "sounds" rather than just pointing to observable facts. It affords them a little plausible deniability.
@33: Hey Kristofarian! In a single word, name the secretive, powerful group that was quietly pulling the strings behind the scenes to orchestrate the overthrow of Maduro? Bet you can't do it! đ
Just wanted to show my appreciation for that classy joyful goodness, which the Stranger always delivers to Seattleâs civic life:
âOur maligned loser of a City Attorney Ann Davison is now our former maligned loser of a City Attorney.â
So, which hurts more: that Davison likely proceeds to private-sector employment which pays 5-10 times (!) what the Stranger pays its writers, or that no one will ever forget how the Strangerâs epically bumbling political arrogance helped a Republican get elected in Seattle for the first time in thirty years?
@15 Huh. Minnesota never prosecuted fraud by Somalis, but the evidence that there was widespread fraud is that there were all of these prosecutions and convictions, largely by state authorities! Pick a lane, man.
@28 I don't think that anyone claimed that QLC was a high standards day care. However, despite the faked-up video, they did appear to be providing day care services, probably at or slightly below the minimum state standards. The fact that they were providing day care services for the money being paid to them to provide day care services means it wasn't fraud, by definition.
@40: lol, what are talking about. The prosecutions of the Somali and Somali-American fraudsters were federal prosecutions because the frauds were federal crimes. đ The âstate authoritiesâ were the ones who were supposed to be preventing fraud from happening in the first place. đ Confusing, right? đ Welcome to American welfare administration! đ
The CATO Institute has compiled resources on the massive fraud scandal in Minneapolis;
https://www.cato.org/blog/minnesota-fraud-update
I'm telling you folks, this IS what an American socialist experiment will actually look like. Nothing like an east bloc Soviet horror show, far more banal...just endless slop being fired out of scores of terribly run social programs like a mule with explosive diarrhea. The wealthy Brahmin class will approve it all and throw a blind eye to the defects because for them the approval itself is a social currency, a post modern Catholic Indulgence. Regular people get milked but never qualify to suckle, and the lower rungs are preserved under the Banyan tree, safe from the beasts out on the Savanah, but under a shade where nothing ever grows.
"Every minute I spend defending my own political interests would be a minute I canât spend defending the people of Minnesota against the criminals who prey on our generosity..." - Tim Walz
Someone isn't forthcoming on this topic. Tim Walz says there is a fraud problem, but Vivian/TS/Slogicians deny it.
Expanding on @46 @15 presumes that the state did nothing about the fraud that occurred. The fact that the state referred people for prosecution or prosecuted people in state court (and yes, they did that too) shows that the state actually did care and was doing something about it.
@47 There was fraud, in other programs. The day care fraud is mostly a nothingburger. The biggest complaint is that the day care workers had locked doors (duh) and that they wouldn't let some rando off the street with an 8-person team in to take video of the kids to post on the internet. Because that's, you know, illegal without parental permission. And on a couple of them, they arrived outside of posted open hours so the places were closed.
The horror! Those Somali day cares had open hours and they weren't open outside those hours, and they followed the law on child privacy! Hang 'em high!
@48: Such a charitable interpretation. But the true culprit is the legislated child care funds being made available in the first place without accountability by inept politicians and governors in MN, WA, and CA.
@46: Absolutely not. đ The feds were working off the fruits of their own investigation, as you can read yourself in the affidavits of the FBI agents. The state authorities knew there were financial irregularities in the welfare programs, but they were too intimidated by political considerations (especially racial considerations) to do anything. If the feds hadnât taken over, those fraudsters would still be cashing checks today, as the Kossack has so wittily observed. đ
âMinnesota State Democrats did a good job handling Somali welfare fraudâ is not a hill you want to die on, ha ha ha
Hilariously this is the very same shelter that all the Tanya Woo fans, including the Times, were up in arms about being racist because it's too close to the CID.
@36 "name the secretive, powerful group that was quietly pulling the strings behind the scenes to orchestrate the overthrow of Maduro?"
"Under the control of anti-vax Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cut the number of vaccines recommended to all children from 17 to 11, removing from the list those for hepatitis A and B, rotavirus, RSV, flu, and meningitis. The decision was not scientific, and made without public or expert input. While the vaccines are still available, weakening the institutional support for vaccines undermines the publicâs confidence in a safe and effective medical practice, endangering the lives of children at large."
Wow, that all sounds really bad! Maybe next time, the Stranger, sympathetic commenters, progressive holders of elected offices in the Seattle area, and progressive candidates for same, will all agree that very large and important differences separate the Democratic and Republican parties, and, as the policies of the latter will inevitably prove disastrous to children and other living things, we all need to prevent Republicans from getting elected -- even if it means often voting for imperfect Democrats? (Especially now, that pretty much everyone here acknowledges -- even if silently! -- that a strip of Mediterranean beachfront property barely twice the size of Seattle, ~half of it infested with misogynist, anti-gay, jihadi terrorists, simply isn't the Center Of The Entire Known Universe?)
@39 it does seem a little early to be taking a victory lap over the city attorney race. There was a kerfuffle over the weekend about drug decriminalization but of course the truth is a bit nuanced. What changed is Evans openly stating she is going to send anyone arrested for public drug use to diversion basically taking us back to the Pete Holmes era circa 2019. Of course there are many of us that remember that era and the reality of that policy is that drug use was de facto decriminalized. Why? Well offenders were cycled through diversion again and again and again and there were no consequences for not following through on treatment and follow up. Eventually the police just stopped arresting them and moved on to other things that were more productive.
Will it be different this time around? Maybe but I would say many of us aren't holding out much hope. What we will be able to see two and four years from now is whether OD deaths increased, whether public safety issues such as shoplifting and assault increased, whether encampments increased as people are drawn to Seattle for the lax enforcement. If things stay the same or decrease then a victory lap and an I told you so would be welcome. I'm not going to hold out hope that will actually come to pass though.
@54 "taking us back to the Pete Holmes era circa 2019. Of course there are many of us that remember that era and the reality of that policy is that drug use was de facto decriminalized. Why? Well offenders were cycled through diversion again and again and again and there were no consequences"
No, drug use was in actual fact decriminalized because the RCW prohibiting simple possession was struck down as unconstitutional by the State Supreme Court. Pete Holmes had nothing to do with it because before the law was struck down simple possession had been a felony.
Coolidge dear, we have no evidence of either President Clinton or Bill Gates being involved as of yet. Right now, itâs just a Republican masturbatory fantasy.
That was a separate, new, additional shelter that KC wanted to add.
I am all for adding new shelter, provided it is measured, and funded or not funded, based on measurable outcomes. How many people did it get into housing? How many into vocational training or college? How many into jobs? For those too disabled to work, how many got into subsidized housing appropriate to their cognitive or physical disability?
The wrong measures are how many bed-nights did you provide at what cost per person served? A low-cost per bed-night is a lousy measure of value, if we will be providing bed-nights for the next decade to the same person.
Most importantly, it's inhumane not to have the expectation that the human served will be nudged and resourced to be all that they are humanly capable of being.
@52: "Hilariously this is the very same shelter that all the Tanya Woo fans, including the Times, were up in arms about being racist because it's too close to the CID."
Tanya Woo successfully led the CID's opposition to a large expansion of an existing shelter; she was not opposed to any existing shelter itself. "In March [of 2022], the County announced a $66.5 million plan to expand the 270-unit shelter that opened last summer. The plan pays to preserve the existing units and adds 150 units of shelter to the area, including 40 high-acuity shelter beds and 40 to 50 tiny shelters."
Furthermore, the charge of racism came from the city and county not contacting the CID community before going forward with the shelter's expansion plans, as the Stranger also explained at that time:
"Woo has a point. The City has made construction plans in the CID a number of times without consulting the neighborhood: the Kingdome, DESCâs Navigation Center, and the light rail expansion to name a few."
By contrast, the subject of this article lived briefly at the William Booth Center, (which houses up to 241 individuals, https://seattle.salvationarmy.org/seattle_services/william-booth-center/), then moved to the Discovery House in Ballard, which is not affiliated with the Salvation Army. He seems to be doing well, fully employed and back in school.
If city and county's homelessness response had ever been anywhere near as successful as the profiled individual's experience has been, then the CID may never have revolted against an expansion of the shelter. It was the very negative experiences (mentioned @9) which drove their response.
@60 "Tanya Woo successfully led the CID's opposition to a large expansion of an existing shelter; she was not opposed to any existing shelter itself."
Nope. Read in her own words:
"Past racist actions seem to drive future racist actions. Decisions are being made for city- and countywide gain at the expense of the CID community. ... This expanded shelter started in the same way. Initially, King County outfitted a building to serve as a COVID-19 isolation and recovery center. It became an emergency smoke shelter in September 2020 with 77 beds. It soon expanded to become a homeless shelter with 269 beds. Now it will be a permanent shelter expanding to 500 beds. Again, with no community engagement as it was deemed an "emergency." "Emergency" has become another way to steamroll through the CID without having to do the work of a racially conscious ally."
@3, ".....died directly from violence during the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot....."
Much as I criticize SLOG for continuously missing the Who, What, When, Where, Why, & How of good reporting, they don't say "..died directly from violence...". And I would argue that the deaths are 'attributable to/connected with' the incident.
@4, And I would argue that this is the situation in MPLS which goes along with my contention that the whole George Floyd 'murder' is horse manure: The head of the MN Law Enforcement Community is Keith Ellison, a black man. And there are numerous, NUMEROUS, black police chiefs across the USA. This whole nonsense about the US Law Enforcement Community being racist is just that, nonsense & horse manure. Police departments in general are cans of worms & screwed up. But that is the way it's been since time began. "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?" comes from the Satires of Juvenal, the 1st/2nd century Roman satirist.....so we know this has been going on since Rome. A very prominent (TheCivilRightsLawyer) YouTuber has a whole video on how we will NEVER know the real truth of the responsibility for George Floyd because the jury & trial were so tainted by the pre trial political accusations from both the press, activists, & political and governmental officials. That goes as well for Castile, Brown, Garner, Clark et al. They got screwed by life. But the responsibility is borne by life, NOT just the police.
@7, I think they mean that the story that Musk, Zuckerberg, Bezos et al are honest businessmen is for the chumps. Not for people with a brain.
@8, I haven't totaled my look at the thing in MPLS, but I CAN say that I've watched EVERY MINUTE of EVERY on line video about George Floyd. IMHO everything he got, he brought on himself. I grew up on the streets & they'd have done the exact same thing to me, a working class white man, if I'd done what he did. So, again I say, what the police did to Floyd may have not been right, but racism had nothing to do with it.
@9, Amen.
@10, Yeah, and Biden needed to pull out because, unlike Trump, Biden was too old. And Keith Ellison is a white racist, Attn General, oppressing the black people in MN. And I've got a bridge in NY you might like to buy. ("Never give a sucker an even break, nor smarten up a chump. You can't cheat an honest man." - Words to live by.)
@15, Amen & amen!!! Now THAT'S the beginning of TRUTH!! And, IMHO, it's mostly thanks to Ben Krump & Al Sharpton extorting the city of MPLS out of $29M over Floyd.
@19, We'll be happy to. As soon as Trump and his legacy, are gone, we'll be able to.
@35, No, we do it because we know we're not God. And because it's polite. And because, unlike half this country, we know how to evaluate the preponderance of the evidence to find the truth......which is not an exact science.
@37, are you confusing ACORN the 'investment' site with Acorn, the pharma company?
@39, ".....helped a Republican get elected in Seattle for the first time in thirty years?....." I live 20 miles to the west so I don't know all the details of that. Except the part about Pramila Jayapal et al sliming Hillary & handing the Presidency to Trump.
@44, Interesting take. I'll have to think about that layout.
@47, After the slime job Sharpton & Krump have done over the decades in MN, I wouldn't want them turning their guns on me either. Again, not that what they've done is unique to any ethnic or racial group. I just wouldn't want to be the target of it.
"I'm telling you folks, this IS what an American socialist experiment will actually look like."
So the set of circumstances and situation there in your link that literally and ACTUALLY happened under capitalism, that's the speculative hellscape that you seek to avoid under socialism?
ha ha, what a pill, good riddance. đ Tanya Woo is the least competent elected official I have ever met. Whenever she opens her mouth, she sounds like an undergrad trying to fake her way through a classroom discussion of a book she hasnât read. đ
@61: Thank you very much for supporting my point. The phrase, "expanded shelter," is right there in her quote, and she details the expansion history, especially how out-of-touch with the CID (and dishonest, a point I hadn't made) it was.
@65: Yes, but the Stranger refuses to admit activists often make for terrible elected officials, so they opposed her because she was a disobedient brown woman -- and not just that (which would have been bad enough already from the Stranger's perspective!), she also dared threaten one of the Stranger's very obedient brown women.
On January 6th, this nation was raped. Everyone knew it was raped. There was no question it was rape. Now these boomers want you to believe it was always consensual and even you who asked for it. They are trying to normalize the rape of America. There is no other way to put it. These people should all be phased out, their only answer is to live a lie backed by collective delusion.
Coolie, you will not be spared because you are a wolf in sheep's clothing. You are already dead inside.
@54: Good shot at rational analysis, but none of that matters. The Stranger's tardy, churlish, sore-winner swipe at Davison comes from them helping to elect a Republican. They'll never admit it, but that reveal, of just how little they know about local politics, will always hurt them.
As for the real-life issues you mentioned, the Stranger either simply doesn't care (e.g. homeless addicts dying of overdoses by the thousands) or regards it as a feature, not bug (e.g. flooding Seattle's streets with repeat violent offenders represents 'victory over the carceral state').
@27: "I think I detect in @24 the first faint stirrings of Krisofarian's inevitable argument that the (((Zionists))) were secretly the ones to overthrow Nicolas Maduro."
Eh, due to your mention, I went back and read his comments in real-time (gee, "thanks," :-/ ) for the first time since he disappeared, and he's not openly pushing the Protocols (yet). @24b represents his declaration the Genocide Gang have abandoned all hope of bullying anyone else into agreement with them, and therefore, they can now safely wipe Hamas' actual genocide on 10/7 from their collective memory. From now onwards with them, that rabid monster Israel simply attacked children in Palestine because "genocide!!", full stop.
@26, he finally gives up his stupid "reich-wing" rhetorical flatulence, which he used to impress his fellow teenage males on their junior-high-school playground, and just starts calling Seattle liberals Nazis, for our daring to use facts and logic to thwart his "genocide" bullying. As the closest he can ever approach to honest, rational argument, it's almost a refreshing admission of total failure, so I guess it's ok for that. (Again, :-/ )

A devastating letter

underlines one of the great scandals of our age
What the BBC and other organisations did is either completely erase the statements of genocidal and criminal intent made by Israeli leaders and officials, or bury them, and indeed refuse to explain the genocidal and criminal nature of those statements.
These statements proved the most accurate roadmap for what Israel would go on to do, and yet the BBC completely misled their audiences about Israelâs intent, treating these statements as though they were being issued in a parallel universe, and instead zoning in on deceitful statements issued by Israeli officials designed for Western audiences.
The BBC repeatedly framed their stories around the false statements and claims of the Israeli state, treating them as credible despite the overwhelming evidence of Israel lying over and over again and indeed committing every single war crime and crime against humanity under the sun.
The fact there is a consensus amongst genocide scholars, including Israeli genocide scholars, that Israel is committing genocide, has been suppressed, with those scholars being erased.

Clarifying on what I wrote @70, ââŚnow safely wipe Hamas' actual genocide on 10/7 from their collective memory.â Of course, our Genocide Gang had already refused to admit Hamasâ conduct during the war (using civilians in Gaza as human shields, operating to maximize civilian casualties, firing rockets into Israeli cities from Rafah, etc.) and have since blacked out all mention of Hamasâ conduct since the war ended (mass execution of Palestinian civilians in Gaza; retaking of a hospital which theyâd used as a fortress during the war).
Our friendly neighborhood Genocide Gang has but one version of the war, and Hamas simply doesnât exist in that version. (Except, weirdly enough, for having carte Blanche against disarming now, of course!)

It looks like the "Somali Daycare Scandal" is going down as the Somali Daycare Hoax - just another cruel right-wing stunt designed to hurt essential workers, a la Glenn Beck's "exposure" of ACORN. To judge by some of the comments on this forum, this must be very painful news for nazis nationwide.

Coolidge dear, so was trump. Then he became involved in The Epstein Child Rape facility and became a Republican. See how that works?
@40: lol, what are talking about. The prosecutions of the Somali and Somali-American fraudsters were federal prosecutions because the frauds were federal crimes. đ The âstate authoritiesâ were the ones who were supposed to be preventing fraud from happening in the first place. đ Confusing, right? đ Welcome to American welfare administration! đ
@41: Yet Bill Clinton and Bill Gates are still democrats. Your theory isn't working.
The CATO Institute has compiled resources on the massive fraud scandal in Minneapolis;
https://www.cato.org/blog/minnesota-fraud-update
@19: Senate democrats were so moved by the anniversary they held a candles and tears remembrance on the Capitol steps. đŻď¸
@42 And the feds were working off of prosecution referrals by state officials. My God, you're dumb.
@47: Good catch.

Easy: the CIA
@53: âpretty much everyone here acknowledges ⌠[Gaza] isn't the Center Of The Entire Known Universe?â
Theyâve acknowledged no such thing. đAntizionism is the Philospherâs Stone of the progressive movement. đđđ

@52, Actually its not.

@9, Amen.
@44,
"I'm telling you folks, this IS what an American socialist experiment will actually look like."
So the set of circumstances and situation there in your link that literally and ACTUALLY happened under capitalism, that's the speculative hellscape that you seek to avoid under socialism?
Good times.
@57 No. The Blake decision was handed down in Feb of 2021. TS torpedoed hai reflection campaign 3 months later.
@61: âthe work of a racially conscious ally."
ha ha, what a pill, good riddance. đ Tanya Woo is the least competent elected official I have ever met.
Hey Coolidge, what happened to the longest serving Republican Speaker of the House? Why did he leave Congress? I'll wait.
@67: Why wait? Ask AI or use a search engine to quench your curiosity quirk. Report back with any compelling anecdotes.
(Again, :-/ )

from Owen Jones' 'Battlelines':
BBC staff: we're forced to do pro-Israel PR
A devastating letter
signed by over 100 BBC journalists
underlines one of the great scandals of our age
