The blunt force of shooting pregnant Charleena Lyles 7 TIMES IN FRONT OF HER OWN CHILDREN IS NOT AND CANNOT BE DEEMED "APPROPRIATE"!! Was it a jury of racists bought and paid for by the SPD? This is inexcusably further proof that Seattle has no law enforcement. Fellow 99.9999999999999999999999%ers, we're on our own.

5

Of course the action against Charleena Lyles was appropriate, she was black and did not have a gun.

Of course the lack of action against the Uvalde shooter was appropriate, he was white and had a gun.

6

@2: I miss Morty. He was a good cop (I think he's now retired), and told about law enforcement like it truly is. A year ago last April commenting on a SLOG article, Morty had warned about how law enforcement agencies are scraping down to the bottom of the barrel in recruiting new officers. Not enough people are seeking careers in law enforcement these days, and current officers are quitting and / or retiring, running for the exits in record droves. According to Morty, people the LE agencies wouldn't even consider 10 years ago are being hired now.
Watch out for more mass shootings and freaked out cops "mistaking" their firearms for tasers in pursuit of a fleeing assailant. We have been warned.
This is NOT something out of a Police Academy movie----this is real life, and it's only going to get worse!

In better news, hooray for the naming of Cayou Channel in the San Juans!

8

Jas: "..., but this decision is absolutely gut-wrenching."

Only if you think that gut stabbing would be no big deal.

9

@5 Brent: How can you say that?? Are you pro-NRA? Comments like that are why we have no democracy anymore.

11

@9: Your sarcasm detector needs its battery recharged my dear.

12

@9, the 11s are correct.

Non-sarcasm: I am consistently baffled as to how cops somehow manage to take all of these mass shooters alive. It proves it is possible to not go into every situation guns blazing. Even ones which probably do actually merit shooting a suspect.

For years I've regarded his existence as a monument to all the rancid genes and broken chromosomes that corrupt the possibilities of the American Dream; he was a foul caricature of himself, a man with no soul, no inner convictions, with the integrity of a hyena and the style of a poison toad.

The Nixon I remembered was absolutely humorless; I couldn't imagine him laughing at anything except maybe a paraplegic who wanted to vote Democratic but couldn't quite reach the lever on the voting machine."

I don’t understand why the police didn’t have a 3rd party (relative, female social worker) on hand when they went to see Lyles, a person with known instability- with the hope that the 3rd person could de-escalate the encounter.
OK, that’s asking too much - but what did happen was the perfect storm of awful. Once Lyles becomes upset, and waves - or lunges with a knife - what else are the police going to do?

@29, tone down the empathy, bro.

31

As Toby (repeatedly) and @29 have noted, by the time the responders have arrived in the constricted space with the crazy person, it's all-but-certain a good outcome will not happen. If the responders are armed, then the crazy person dies; if the responders are not armed, then their chance of getting hurt rises considerably. Any inquiry will merely result in victim-blaming all around, as crazy persons are not legally responsible for their actions.

What we need is to build a society where crazy persons are provided with the help they require, whether they consent to it or not. What we have is a society where crazy persons are allowed to live unsupervised -- and in charge of children (!) -- or out in the parks in tents, self-medicating via street pharmacology. Given the Stranger's unrelenting and continuing advocacy of that last atrocity, it will be an even longer time before we get to a place where crazy persons are not frequently shot by police.

@28: Everyone else here is smart enough to ignore what politicians say, and carefully examine what politicians do. That's how you wound up being totally wrong on the issue of a woman's right to choose, even as other commenters here were completely correct. Therefore, you should spend more time listening to the persons who were right, and less (ideally zero) time talking.

32

@29 has the moral clarity that needed to be said. In fact, Charlene's father needs an empathy refresher himself. He should understand what those final moments were all about. His daughter wanted death by cop and would have kept on stabbing as she was screaming 'Do it!' repeatadly. Those officers will be forever tormented by the fact that they had to take a life to save their own and the father and all of Charleena's family should forgive them and pray with them. Nobody wanted this horror to happen, except Charleena herself.

35

@33: Thank you for amplifying my point. Only the woman has the right to choose, as it's her body and hers alone.

@34: Thank you for amplifying my point. The only person here admiring your self-proclaimed superiority is you. The rest of us understand what Our Very Own Divine Mrs. Vel-DuRay teaches us: Republicans are horrible people, and therefore we need to keep them out of elective office. That includes holding our noses and voting for Democrats when that is the only REAL option. Knowing the difference between when it is, and when it is not, the only real option, is the point you keep missing. You should therefore shut up and listen to the persons who actually do know this.

36

NOT holding centrist or Corporate Dems
Accountable is what got us here.

what Extricates us?

meanwhile thnx
to the KkKonnell Ct.
the slide into Fascism
Rapidly gains Momentum.

38

@37: Thank you for amplifying my point. My claim was not ever that the Democrats are "the one true party," but that thanks to the failure of the Republicans to remain sane, the Democrats are, by default, the only game in most towns. Pretending otherwise helps only the Republicans.

It is YOUR kind of thinking that brought us the Trump administration, and the Cheney-W administration before that. CM Sawant actively campaigned against Hillary Clinton, thus helping Trump's election, and votes for Nader instead of Gore kept Cheney-W within cheating distance in Florida. Between Justices appointed by Cheney-W and Trump, women (not 'persons'; a man does not have a uterus) lost their national right to choose. A woman's right to choose is actually more important than whether you got good feelies about how you voted.

39

@11a: Speaking of desperately needed battery recharges, how is your motorized wheelchair doing under your verbally flatulent bulk, Elmer dear?

@12 Brent Gumbo: Okay. I didn't immediately catch your sarcasm. I should have noted the "Of courses" though. Comment @9 caught me by surprise, mainly because we seem to consistently agree on a lot of issues. Nonetheless, thank you for the clarification.

@24 pat L: Good question! Yes. I distinctly remember Monika Williams, a surviving sister of Charleena Lyles stating in an interview in The Seattle Times in 2017 that she "could have taken [her sister] down", and that there was no need for police firearms. Why wasn't there some family intervention that could have prevented this tragedy, and especially in front of Lyles' children? Police officers should not be first responders to mental health issues (and the SPD KNEW this about Charleena Lyles!), especially when cops are trained to shoot first and answer questions in court later.

@28, @33, @34, and @37: If you listen to Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity and their neofascist shit-spewing god, the Orange Turd, you seriously need to pull your head out of your ass. Your butt crack must be deeper than the Grand Canyon.

@29: Um, gee--writing another senseless word salad novel, Herr Boob? A licensed therapist might help you to better comprehend your bizarre level of misogyny. Stop watching Fox TeeVee.

40

@38 tensor: Thank you.

42

Thank you for the shout-out, tensor dear. Too many adults fail to realize that life is comprised of compromises, and then we die, and that the “lesser of two evils” can sometimes be a very good option.

I am a big supporter of Senator Sanders, going back about twenty years, when he had weekly appearances on The Thom Hartman show. When he didn’t win the nomination, I was disappointed, but I supported Senator Clinton because 1) she was the nominee, and 2) she was imminently qualified.

For all of those who are certain that Senator Sanders would have won, I urge you to look around at our nation. The GOP would have whipped this country into an anti-Semitic frenzy over the prospect of a “Socialist Jew” in the White House - similar to how they poisoned the well for Senator Clinton with all of their ridiculous garbage about her.

As for Ms Lyles, the root of the tragedy is that we have no sympathy or empathy for the mentally ill, and we think force is the answer to every problem. It sounds like she was basically being warehoused, with very little being done to help her.

"Sit with that" -- another exciting new way to say "shut up." Used when somebody makes a statement they are not prepared to defend, but would still like to enjoy their mic-drop moment.

47

@42 Catalina Vel-DuRay: Thank you and bless you for the perfectly well said summarization as to why we, as a nation are so fucked up now politically, and of the tragic death of Charleena Lyles that was totally preventable.

@45: I'm not in a rest home, you ignorant MAGA turd but you should be. Your ultra-wrong-wing-whack false accusation of my "patting Charleena Lyles on the back" further demonstrates how far off into our depleted ozone layer you are regarding unwarranted police brutality and systematic racism. STFU already.
Charleena Lyles had a mental disorder. The SPD knew this. Lyles should have had her mental health issues more thoroughly addressed. Obviously they weren't. Having to solely rely on 9-1-1 for a burglary and the SPD and then have to resort to self defense, only to get fatally shot 7 times is glaring proof that the system is horribly flawed and needs an overhaul. Patting gun crazed cops on the back for murder of citizens is not the answer.
Riding Jeff Bezos' space dildo much, Err Boob?

48

@46: Okay, Gen-Zzzzzzer. Good idea. Sit on it and rotate.

49

@44 little bird: That might look good on paper but.....let's replay the scenario: Two armed male SPD officers restraining one woman with a kitchen knife.
I say bullshit to your theory of law enforcement officers defending their lives in this case. They were two macho city cops hellbent on protecting their fragile egos if not their dicks. Shit like this is becoming too commonplace and shouldn't be. By defunding the NRA, police forces wouldn't be overly armed with military assault weapons (do we REALLY need a local neighborhood cop armed with an AK-47 on a residential beat?).

50

@49: Did anyone notice what I did there? Neither skin color nor race was mentioned regarding the people involved.

51

@32: Are you and Err Boob @29 deeply engaged in a glue-sniffing party, Elmer?

This reminds me of a recently published Seattle Times commentary by Trudy Rubin, columnist and editorial board member of the Philadelphia Inquirer ["This Ukrainian limbo cannot last forever", Sunday, July 17, 2022 Opinion pages, The Seattle Times].
Rubin wrote about visiting Krakow, Poland, where a lot of Ukrainian refugees, many displaced women and girls, were warmly welcomed by the Poles, offered food, shelter, and jobs. Said one local: "They're fighting Russia so we don't have to."
I'm starting to feel like a woman at an abortion rights rally, fighting of RWNJs, who
was wearing a t-shirt that read: "I shouldn't have to keep doing this!"

@16, @20, @21, and @54 STII: Actually, I read in a recent biography of Academy Award-winning actress Louise Fletcher (who recently turned 88 on July 22, 2022) stated that she doesn't watch One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, anymore. She can't bear to anymore because of the blatant inhumanity toward inpatients in the film's content, shot on location at Oregon State Hospital in Salem.
Fletcher also could not stand seeing the men in the movie laughing and being happy, while her character had to remain stone-faced and cruel. She wanted to hang out with "The Nuts in Formation": Jack Nicholson, William Redfield (himself an actual patient at Oregon State Hospital, playing the role of Mr. Harding. Sadly, Redfield died of leukemia shortly after One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was released in 1975), Danny DeVito, Will Sampson, Sydney Lassick, Christopher Lloyd, and others. Fletcher went so far as to strip down to her panties on the set during filming to show that she wasn't a monster.
