Most of the score by Miles Davis was improved while watching early edits. I've owned the soundtrack LP forever, and it includes unused music takes.

Europe is capable of turning out some crap, too, but if all you've ever been exposed to is modern American movies, you really can't know what cinema can be or what it can do and say.

And truthfully, what a little age can do to an observer. Recently, I re-watched "The Fugitive" which I sorta liked back in 1993, and unrelatedly, because of Jean-Louis Trintignant's passing, I was also re-viewing some of his work - like "Il Sorpasso". Not much in common with those two movies except maybe you could call both a non-buddy buddy film. The difference in the dark, however, is very distinct. One is a loud, exposing wad of unlikely cotton candy; the other is a snippet of time of the human condition - subtle and unaware of itself. Moving.

The difference between American and European cinema really becomes (sometimes painfully) apparent when you watch the European original followed by the American remake. There are many to choose from. Try watching the 1988 French-Dutch thriller, "The Vanishing" and then watch the 1993 remake with Jeff Bridges. You'll see what I mean. Or the charmingly off-beat and quirky "The Italian Job" from 1969, and follow it up with the 2003 version which is spectacular, but primarily a travelogue.

So yes, Charles, a very fine moment at the movies. Thanks for sharing.

Phoenix also has lots of sidewalk misters. And no, we don't need then in Seattle.
Unlike Phoenix, it's not 115' F with 10% humidity in Seattle!

@1 inferring from your name, I am younger than you, so I would bear more of the deficit burden over the course of my life. I absolutely do not give a shit. It's a meaningless number. And concern is only ever feigned for it when there is talk of trying to improve peoples lives. Charles is right, spite is uniquely human. And a point of pride for many.

Just to be clear: the Republinazis were never going to allow a vote on marriage equality and interracial marriage.
They are sadistic, soulless, lying psychopaths that only feel good about themselves when they’re harming others, and they don’t feel any emotions other than greed and hate.

Charles have you seen Rutherford Falls? The talk about how you don't need to leave a lid on a bucket of crabs because if one starts to climb out the others will pull it back? Anyway yeah Susie Collins

Re centrist Ds, there should be more discussion on how the entire political spectrum of the US is in the D party. Then there are the seditionist authoritarians over on the R side. Anyway, because the entire political discussion is happening within the D party we should be happy when they get something done and are not thwarted by the power mad nihilists.

@11 That's not animal spite, it just looks like it. When a crab spots another crab escaping, it instinctively grabs hold in an attempt to escape with it. Of course the result is always the same.

@6 Brent Gumbo, @7 Original Andrew, and @9 blip for the group WIN!!
Bravo! I have nothing more to add to this comment thread.

@14: If subsequent crabs watch the first one grab the edge and rescue itself and they do the same, that's leadership in action. However if they grab the first guy and expect a free ride up, that's socialism.
