Any presidential documents deemed covered by "executive privilege" are nevertheless government records, and Trump doesn't get to squirrel them away in his sorta bunker. It just means they may not become publicly available for a while.

3

Rich, I suggest you write a poem about black hole sounds.

4

@1 -- Didn't bother to read the article, did you? It isn't that hard to understand, but you figured you would just spout bullshit criticism. According to the article:

While some mass shootings are committed by people with diagnosed mental illnesses, a life crisis is a better predictor of violence, researchers say.

Still confused? The key phrase is "diagnosed mental illnesses". Hell, the key word here is "diagnosed".

5

@1 my god you are a very, very dumb person

Pull a knife on a cop in the US, you get shot, no matter what happens on Knifecrime Island.

13

@10,

In '24 you think? I'd wondered if anyone was gonna do that. Biden's actually seemingly maintained his general acuity & faculties probably about as well as could be expected to date. Part of me was hoping he'd begin to wear down, so as to make the DNC's job of confidentially informing him he'd not be the nom a bit easier. But I'm not really seeing it happening yet, at least not publicly.

14

[edit: I know, I know... waaaaayyy too early to even begin thinking/talking about it. sorry, can't help it]

17

Is there a chance that the Orange Turd and its loyalists can get sucked into a black hole, never to be seen or heard of again?

Damn! As if there isn't already enough toxic waste in Puget Sound. If our Southern resident orcas live another five years it'll be amazing.

@1: Are you, jackkay, and Elmer all roomies? Stop confusing Fox TeeVee with actual news before your brain has a meltdown.

18

For shit's sake, Scottie. Stop if it starts to hurt.

19

The black hole sounds like the monolith.

20

@8 Thank you for pointing out the cowardice of American cops. From Uvalde to executing a man with a small whittling knife, they've got the whole spectrum of yellow covered.

21

Morty must be reeling over all the bad cop stories. It's not like as an ex-cop himself, he didn't warn us of this escalating daily shitshow. Law enforcement agencies are scraping down to the bottom of the barrel because recruitment is in the toilet. And the good, morally decent police officers are running for the exits.
What to do as an average citizen when U.S. law enforcement, hired and trained (at least up until the last six years) to protect and serve are armed with riot gear and military assault weapons, just to do a daily beat?

And to think constables in the UK only defend themselves with billy clubs.

22

@17: No auntie, we don't want them sucked into a black hole as they would likely also fall into time warps providing them with all sorts of opportunities.

23

In my roughly 57 years of being aware of the Omaha Police Department (my sister still lives in Omaha, so I keep a hand in), I can't think of one time where military equipment would have improved the situation.

24

88 Tactical is code for Heil Hitler Tactical wtg Omaha

25

@6 - the point is to try and determine whether there are indicators that might make someone more likely to do a mass shooting so we can intervene. Even if mental illness is linked to mass shootings, it's no use as a predictor if most of those with the right kind of mental illness have not been diagnosed.

26

“88Tacitical”

Hmmmmmm… they don’t even hide it anymore.

Fun fact: “88” is a common neo-Nazi code for “Heil Hitler.”

nyt: Governor Newsom Vetoes
Bill for Drug-Injection Sites in California

The governor said that he supported the idea of supervised facilities to reduce overdoses and deaths, but that the state was not yet prepared to put it into practice.

one comment
not on Newsom
but on pragmatism:

I can see the reality deniers are out in full force this morning. Its a well documented fact that these types of resources frequently lead to better, healthier outcomes for addicts.

They save lives, they promote treatment without requiring it. When the addicts are all gathered together in a place to safely use, many look around and realize how pathetic their plight is, and marvel at how society still cares enough about them to try and create a safe, harm-reduced space for them to use, and ultimately decide to finally seek help.

This is not the case when they are isolated and alone in back alleys. These type of sites have worked to reduce overall drug consumption, increased effective treatment enrollment, and reduced addict related crime in the countries where they first originated, such as Portugal and New Zealand.

Its a shame that governor Newsom vetoed this bill, but at least he understands the need and the good they do, unlike many of the posters here, and obviously, the majority of the republican party.

@6:

Weren't you the dumbass who recently opined that people could turn their mental health state on-and-off, just like a fucking light switch?

31

@30: I think you made an important point there, but it's tangled. Could we have a rewrite please?

33

Thanks blip. It was the "people need to believe" vs "lots of people believe" that had me puzzled. You're right. Exhibit A is Ted Bundy.

Nevertheless a lot of murderers are mentally ill - especially if sociopathic and psychopathic are considered as mental illnesses (?).

In reference to Olympia cops shooting a man in mental health crisis who was wielding a knife, Rich says: "Somehow English cops manage to arrest people who attack officers with knives without killing them," providing a link to an April 2022 AP News story from the UK. Besides this being the wrong story to bolster his argument -- a single incident involving military police, not city cops -- it is astounding that after discussing this issue with Rich for over two years & my writing about it numerous times, I guess for Rich it ain't real unless he sees it in the mainstream media. Where was his awareness when Terry Caver was killed by the SPD days before George Floyd, when Derek Hayden was killed by SPD a few months later, or the still unnamed person was killed on Beacon Hill at the beginning of this year? These were all people suffering a mental health crisis and wielding a knife.
For an in depth exploration of this issue, that Rich & The Stranger have ignored, see: https://southseattleemerald.com/2022/06/22/opinion-a-simple-change-could-save-lives-our-police-reform-system-ignores-it/

@22: You have GOT to stop mistaking Fox TeeVee for a reliable news source, Elmer.
Maybe the black hole where your brain should be is exacerbating your confusion.
