Great news about your book, Matt! You write well, and the subject has inspired some of your best work. I hope to read it soon.

Jesus, Matt, La Pine is like 20 miles from the Cedar Creek fire, the largest in Oregon at the moment. Of course the standard AQI doesn’t apply.

We are already dealing with a serious environmental and social challenge. Why add yet more fear? My stepdaughter spent Saturday dealing with a panic attack because she was afraid the evacuations in Snohomish County were going to spread to Bellingham. I thought it was a little irrational, but then I read this kind of crap and I’m not surprised she’s scared shitless. Calm down.

we ALL should be
scared Shitless.

Capitalism will
NOT stop itself.

Congratulations on your new book, Matt!!

@5 kristofarian: I already am scared shitless, kris. If the air quality is bad here in the PNW, it must be completely unlivable throughout California. I will be traveling to Los Angeles soon and am concerned about health conditions down there as well as here. I'll bet I get hassled just for wearing a mask, and I feel uncomfortable with traveling by commercial jet, which only worsens air quality by release of CO2 emissions (air travel is my only available way of getting to and from L.A., and I haven't flown anywhere since 2003). My only consolation is that I'm fully vaccinated for COVID (two Pfizers, two boosters, and a recent flu shot).
I remember when the air quality in Western Washington used to be so clear. There was a ton of snow on Mt. Baker, Mt. Rainier, Mt. Pilchuck, Mt. Shucksan, Three Sisters, and the Olympic Mountain Range. Talk of droughts or water rationing was unthinkable, and it was safe to drink from a muddy garden hose, stream, or freshwater lake. Not anymore. Human made climate change is real and NOT progress! Profiteering developers and the fossil fuel industry should all be held criminally accountable for cheating younger generations who will never enjoy what I have since my childhood out of their futures on our dying planet Earth.
I still have yet to hear a plausible explanation on the benefits of the US Forestry Service's use of "controlled burning", especially if clear-cutting has only helped exacerbate the intensity of wildfires from loss of old growth forests, groundcover, and natural shade.

@7: I'm with shoobop. No worries on any typos, kris. You ought to see MY glaring errors, especially when I can't blame it on red wine.

Only my generation and maybe the one after me are attached to the hallowed Neighbours club name. Millennials and Gen Z-ers probably wouldn't care if the new owner called it Club Butthole ("where buttholes and blowjobs can be had for the price of a watered-down drink").

But really, everything has changed, so why not the name of the venerable old Neighbours? Plus, we can't expect someone from Sacramento or Fresno to respect Seattle tradition, can we? Remember "Of course I'm not moving the Sonics?"

13

@8 - It's not as bad as Seattle, Auntie, here in Los Angeles (can you believe anyone would ever say that?). The tropical storm helped clear the air quite a bit, but it started a Humidity Festival. You'll be OK the nearer you are to the coast. The Inland Empire goes brown very quickly and almost daily. Plus, it's 300 degrees out there even when there's no heatwave (which has thankfully broken). Believe it or not, some like that. For me, it's like opening the oven door to check on the pie.

14

Congratulations Matt!

@4 dude LaPine is like 90 miles east of Cedar Creek. Eugene is half that distance to Oakridge. Maps aren't hard to use.
