"Will you apologize to black people for mass incarceration?"Ansel Herz

Last night, 23-year-old Ashley Williams, a graduate student at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, interrupted Hillary Clinton at a private fundraising event in South Caorlina. CNN reports:

Williams, holding a banner that said, "We have to bring them to heel. #WhichHillary?" asked Clinton, "Will you apologize to black people for mass incarceration?"

Members of the crowd then began to boo Williams, with some shouting, "You're being rude," "This is not appropriate" and "You're trespassing."

Clinton told Williams, "Well, can I talk? And then maybe you can listen to what I say."

Williams interjected, "You owe black people an apology—explain it to us."

"Nobody's ever asked me before. You're the first person to ask me. And I'm happy to address it," Clinton said.

Williams was quoting something Clinton said in 1996 about youth gangs: (watch here): "They are often the kinds of kids that are called 'super-predators.' No conscience, no empathy, we can talk about why they ended up that way, but first we have to bring them to heel."

Williams told the Washington Post: "I thought that quote was important not only because it was her own words, but because that was her pathologizing black youth as these criminal, animal people. And we know that’s not right and we know that’s really racist."

She added that all candidates need to be held accountable for mass incarceration, including Bernie Sanders, who voted for the 1994 crime bill pushed for by the Clintons—after giving a speech decrying its emphasis on putting more people in prison.

But as soon as Williams was hustled out last night's fundraiser, Clinton didn't address the question. "Back to the issues," she says. Watch:

"The New Jim Crow" author Michelle Alexander, who has drawn attention to the Clintons' roles in creating mass incarceration, summed up the encounter this way:

Last night a black woman interrupted one of Hillary's campaign events to ask her why she has not apologized for mass incarceration and for calling black children super-predators who must be brought to heel. Hillary angrily responded that she never apologized because she's never been asked and then declined to apologize and changed the subject. Yes the question was hostile and disruptive but Hillary's response speaks volumes.
