Or, you can build another dumb sports arena next to the Port and all of those jobs go away. And it will take you longer to get your Amazon stuff.

I think the most interesting part of this, when compared to the older, smaller sized container ships, fuel use on a per-container basis is cut by 40%. And ship operating costs are dropped by 11% - since it requires less people to operate. By implementing a newer hull design, more efficient engines and simple scale for efficiency, this thing is like the Prius of shipping containers.

It also means it'll make things cheaper to ship long distances, and less prone to variable fuel prices.

Just like VLCC's ultimately proved unprofitable, so will these

@2: Also the crew is slightly larger than an "average" motor ship (20-22 on most motor ships, an 27 on the M/V B. Franklin) at 27 they're into steam ship crew size

It's unclear what the Country Music Awards have to do with this ... or how many Benjamins fit in one of those shipping containers.

It's good to know that the Port thinks we should industrialize our waterfront as we're currently spending billions to turn it into an even bigger attraction for tourists, residents of downtown, and international businessmen and women. Sure, the Olympic mountains are nice to look at, but wouldn't you rather see a container ship?

At this juncture its not the port trying to gentrify the waterfront, its the city.

@3 What are VLCCs, why were they ultimately unprofitable, and why will this be unprofitable as well? I know nothing about naval shipping.
9
@8- Very Large Crude Carriers.

@8: First off this is Merchant Shipping not naval shipping, so not military at all.

Like Kennesaw MT said A VLCC is Very Large Crude Carrier, what many people would call a super tanker, they proved to be unprofitable because refineries could not except the large volumes involved, so the ship sat at lay berths for to long.

Box boats this size will fail because; there are only limited ports with berths that can accommodate them, and maintenance an bunker cost will outstrip profits

Maersk is already laying up box boats around this size

@9/@10 Thanks for the info.

So these boats basically have the same issues that the Airbus A380 has, interesting.

Please wait...
