Great god, a roving junk party.

@2:

Some of it may be donated, some of it may be scavenged from dumpsters or donation boxes. People leave crap on the sidewalk (gas grills, mattresses, furniture, clothing, etc., etc.) all over my neighborhood, so maybe they just wander by and grab it. Maybe they buy some of it from thrift stores or Goodwill. Maybe some of it's stolen. I can think of all sorts of ways a homeless person could acquire things on-the-cheap or at no cost. After all, when one is stripped down to little in the way of resources, one must by necessity become resourceful.

@ 2 and 3 -

a lot of the junk you see in the picture is the permanent decor of that property, inhabited by infamous local violent racist crackpot Omari Tahir-Garrett. Remember the guy who broke the mayor's face with a loudspeaker and went to jail? That's him.

What about T-5?? Gobs of space and infrastructure and sitting vacant. There's even a cargo de-consolidation facility that must be 40k square feet of covered space. And plumbed restrooms. And the Rapid Ride C stops right on Avalon at Bradford and Yancey and zips right to the heart of downtown. Seems like a possibility, has the Mayor looked at this?

@4:

That trash-heaped yard behind the old Post Office Annex on 24th & E. Spring? Ugh, sounds like a step down from where they were on Dearborn.

@5: the mayor would need to lease it from the port. and, I'd imagine, re-zone it from industrial. I'd wager the port is loathe to allow the use, as it would prove difficult to undo.

I think using vacant warehouses in Sodo is also possible, but the same obstacles would exist.

@ 6

Yup, that's the Umojafest P.E.A.C.E. Center garbage exposition, part of the permanent collection.

But nothing beats the time a few years ago when Omari "planted" a long row of cut Christmas trees.

@6
Umoja PEACE Center is stepping up to help the community where no one else has. I'm a white dude. I've worked with Omari multiple times. The people being given a space are mostly white. Neither Omari or Africatown are racist.

Also, that's not "junk" in the picture. That's their belongings and they're just moving in.

Would you rather the folks there sleep in your doorway and leave their "junk" on your lawn?

@ 9 - Omari is a racist piece of shit.

here he is being one on video:

@9:

Tent City has set up on numerous occasions on a vacant lot not many blocks from there, and the church across the street that owns the property has always welcomed them. That would be just as good a location as Omari's eyesore of a yard - plus, they clean up after themselves when they leave.

Please wait...
