When KEXP DJ and chief content officer Kevin Cole used to lived in Minneapolis, he frequently DJed private parties and events from 1979 to 1986 that were instigated by Prince Rogers Nelson. To pay tribute to the recently departed musical legend, Cole will be devoting today's 2 pm-6 pm slot—dubbed Nothing Compares 2 U: A Celebration of the Life and Music of Prince—to him. Cole related in an email that he'll be playing Prince rarities, "some cool remixes and choice First Avenue cuts [First Avenue is the Minneapolis club where Cole worked as a disc jockey]. Probably the acetate for 'Irresistible Bitch.'" This will be an opportunity for Prince fans to hear anecdotes and music that most DJs could never reveal, as they didn't have that sort of access to the Purple One. KEXP is welcoming listeners to its gathering space to ogle Cole's large stash of Prince memorabilia, signed promo items, and rare recordings. The station encourages you to wear purple and to express your own favorite Prince memories and memorabilia on Twitter by using the #KEXPPrince hashtag.
