What a spiteful, ungracious, response from the organizers of music and celebration of a community to the mayor. Are we suppose to be impressed by that?

it's not 'douchey' at all to say this. they're not telling him to 'piss off'. he is welcome to stop by.and really if he has any spine left, he should. but no sense in pretending folks don't have a beef. their struggle is real and he is responsible for some of that struggle. go ed, just go and handle it like other mayors do.

As a 27-year Beacon Hiller, I have to say this is embarrassing. Most everyone on the hill is far more gracious than those quoted here.

I'm not clear on how this reflects badly on Beacon Hill. We have a Mayor that caters heavily to corporate interests, developers, and tech money and a population that increasingly can't afford to live in their own city. The mean income may be increasing at an incredible rate, but the median isn't.

That stands in stark contrast to the organizers of this event. These folks aren't new to Beacon Hill, and they've been doing this bigger and better every year for a while now. The event is big enough this year to make news beyond the little section of North Beacon that it's held in, but what's really newsworthy is that they're choosing to keep it a local block party instead of turning it into a corporate sponsored festival like the Capitol Hill Block Party has become. And they managed to raise enough funding and volunteers to make it happen despite turning down corporate sponsorship.

If the Mayor wanted to go to the event, he could have simply shown up. As was pointed out by the organizers, it's free event for the entire community. By having his assistant reach out ahead of time, he made it an official visit in his capacity as Mayor, not simply the way he chose to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday afternoon.

In his capacity as the Mayor, not as any other resident of Seattle, he makes decisions that affect the rest of us, and it is our duty as citizens to let our elected representatives know what we want of them in that capacity. The Block Party at The Station did that. They were very, very clear that it is not Ed, or his husband, or any of his friends, that they stand in serious opposition to. It is the Office of the Mayor, and the policies that have been forthcoming from it, that they oppose.

They're doing their part as active participants in our democracy, not being impolite or unwelcoming.

FWIW, one of my Beacon Hill neighbors says that the Mayor was there at the Block Party.
