If you win the Gar LaSalle Storyteller Award form ArtistTrust you get $10,000. No strings attached. You can take that money and pay 1/10th of your student loans! Or pay your rent for some of the year! Or you can buy a mound of cocaine and use the extra energy to write another book!
The submission period opens up on July 11 (that's Monday) and closes September 12, so you have some time to get your stories together. But I'd recommend getting in there early. You know yourself. If you don't do it by next weekend, then you're going to wait until the last minute and then it will be too late and you won't feel comfortable with your submission when the time comes and so you won't submit and then there goes another $10,000 you could have won but didn't.
Anca Szilágyi won the prize last year. In her artist statement, she said the money will allow her to travel to the Netherlands to do research on her third novel. That could be you! Traveling to the Netherlands, eating magic mushrooms and walking through The Heineken Experience brewery tour, where you will learn about the "smiling e" and dance to Will Smith's "Gettin' Jiggy With It" with a bunch of Italians. (You can put all that in your novel. Or not. Probably don't.)
Any resident of Washington who is over 18 can apply, unless you fit into one of these categories:
