I just finished reading Andrew Sullivan's article for New York Magazine, "America and the Abyss" and I recommend it.

I seem to recall a lot of folks here on Slog disliking Andrew Sullivan, though I don't know why. (I would be interested to read anyone's criticisms, especially if they can be sourced too.) The Sullivan article seemed measured and well sourced. It's also a good pairing to Sean Nelson's piece about the dread it's instilled in us.
