Was anybody else immediately repulsed by the careful grooming of his hair?
2
Does anyone seriously think Ferguson's "ban" on AR-15's would have actually prevented this?
3
@2: No one seriously gives a fuck what you have to say about this horrific, tragic, pointless massacre.

1. a 30 day waiting period for ALL firearm purchases MAY have prevented this. Ivanov couldn't get a handgun fast enough in WA state, so he bought a semi-automatic rifle. in 30 days of waiting, he may have lost his homicidal misogynist jealousy.

2. Ivanov's friends could have prevented this. He told them explicitly about his intent, but they sat on their hands and kept his confidence. They should bear that guilt the remainder of their lives.

Condolences to these victims, and the inevitable next victims, ad nauseum.

Not having a waiting period failed to prevent it.

If these waiting periods or assault weapons bans or background checks piss you off so much, then enact the mental health care that you say you think would make a difference. Then these shootings wouldn't happen, so you claim, and nobody would be asking for waiting periods, or magazine limits. The fact that Republicans never actually go ahead and fund the mental health improvements they tout is all the proof you need that they are just blowing smoke in the hopes of keeping the status quo.

@3

The problem with waiting periods is that it cuts both ways. What if you're a woman with a batshit crazy ex and want a gun to protect yourself with? A 30 day waiting period could get you killed.

At least you could still feel morally superior while you're burying her.

@4

Then bypass the Republicans and put mental health funding on a ballot initiative. I'll vote for it. Then Democrats would actually be doing something useful to prevent gun violence instead of their typical feel-good bullshit political grandstanding.

@5

What women with batshit exes? This isn't a Hollywood movie. Arming yourself up doesn't prevent violence against you. We know that. It increases your chances of accidental shooting, suicide, or having your gun stolen by a criminal. Yet the states with the highest rates of women murdered are also the most heavily armed states. The states with the fewest guns are also the ones with the lowest female murder rate.

Democrats aren't shoveling time and money into a ballot initiative to enact the Republican solution to gun violence because DEMOCRATS DON'T FUCKING BELIEVE THE REPUBLICAN SOLUTION. And if they wanted so bad to be patsies that they enacted it just to prove a point, Republicans would sit back and complain they did it wrong and that's why it didn't work. Jesus, this is all a fucking joke to you isn't it? You guys don't want to do anything about gun violence. You don't believe any mental health program would do anything about it. The last thing you want is to actually try it because you'd end up with one less canard to use.

Jesus Christ, next you'll be telling Republicans it's their job to enact single payer health care to prove that it is a devil communism that will destroy freedom. How about this: Republicans put banning all guns on the ballot. I'll vote for it. Derp.

Weirdly, Democrats are trying to deliver all kinds of health care, including mental health, to everyone. Republicans have sworn a blood oath to never let that happen. None of them believe mental health care would prevent any shootings. Because it wouldn't. Shootings are caused by gun culture combined with... what? Guns!

@6

Here's one example: http://townhall.com/tipsheet/mattvespa/2…

Just Google for stories of "woman killed by domestic abuser while waiting for gun permit" or some such. It happens doncha know
8
@5: can you cite any examples of that actually occurring?

and fuck of with your "morally superior while you're burying her". these kids were real, and they are actually dead. do you feel morally superior that ivanov got a semi-automatic rifle without having to wait?
9
Loot at any map of the homicide rate for women, and it's pretty much the same as a map of states without a motorcycle helmet law, or a map of teen birth rates, or suicide rates, or painkiller abuse. Or a map of how heavily armed the state is. More guns -> more women killed. Guns don't keep anyone safe.

The safest states have the fewest guns. Amazing.

Weird how they can't seem to stop talking about Carol Bowne. The NRA be saying her name in 50 years. They have this one case and they'll hang onto that like a bone in their teeth. Forget about the data about thousands upon thousands of Americans. They got that one name and they're going to make the most of it.

@2 You do realize there are more ways to kill people than using a gun right? So if there's a waiting period, he could've just as easily driving a car through the building, or lit it on fire or any number of different things. Or he could've just waited 10 days

@4 There's more to blame than not having a waiting period; we could easily blame it on the police for not stopping it; it is their job to prevent crime right? Improving the mental health system is at least one reliable way to try to address crimes like these.

Did this guy pass a background check too ?

@9 And some of the most gun filled countrys (switzerland) have really low murder rates, so what?

"Guns don't keep anyone safe." So why do the police have them?
11
Well background checks are great for predicting past behavior but they don't see into the future. Just ask any of the school districts who have hired teachers who passed background checks and THEN started raping kids. I'm not sure what good a background check does if you snap after you pass it.
12
An assault weapons ban wouldn't have prevented this tragedy. Neither would a waiting period.

The cold hard truth is that if someone really wants to do harm to another they will find a way. This guy could just as easily have started a fire or waited until his targets were on foot and ran them over ect.
13
@8 there's lots of examples of that happening. Carol Browne is just a recent/ high-profile example.

Please wait...
