Seattle Mayor Ed Murray: "We Will Not Be Intimidated by the Authoritarian Message Coming from This Administration."

We need to start a local currency. Ideally a "mutual credit" currency (as opposed to the "positive interest" federal dollar). A local currency that will (eventually) be able to purchase food and rent.

With such a currency, we can generate our own economic capital, pay for our own needs, and protect ourselves from any likely economic warfare coming from authoriTrumpian tactics.

It's incredibly inspiring to see our representatives step up to defend and protect us and our communities from Twitler and those RepubliKKKan goons in CONgress. This crisis really has brought out the best in so many people, and I've never been more proud of Seattle and Washington state.

Mil gracias a todos.
3
Of course Ed Murray is not worried about Federal funding, he can simply propose another property tax levy.
5
I wish Chuck Schumer or Elizabeth Warren would talk like this. They seem to be capitulating on everthing.
6
Since the SPD's funding seems to be the most vulnerable here, and they are the ones who will have the most power to subvert the "sanctuary" policy, we should expect them to establish a back channel with the local ICE goons. Magically, undocumented folks will get picked up by ICE shortly after an interaction with the SPD.
The new AG Sessions is going to eliminate the federal oversight and tear up the consent decree, so the SPD will be free to revert to their jackboot roots. They have given the citizens of Seattle absolutely NO reason to trust them to be anything other than self-serving authoritarians.
7
@ 4, How about christening them Yellowshirts in honor of Preznit Piss Goblin.

Twitler Youth.

Instead of grandiose statements about protecting people, why not play hardball with these thugs? They don't care about people, they care about money, and the cities are the economic engines of this country, contributing far more in tax revenue and knowledge than the slowly dying hee-haw and dead factory areas ever will.

They mayors of the cities, and the governor's of the productive states, need to go to Chump and tell him that they're not going to put up with his adolescent nonsense. And the City Attorneys and Attorney Generals of those states need to start hitting the Rump administration with lawsuits.

9
@3 Even if that happens, we can't allow Herr Gropenf├╝hrer to go after immigrants, Muslims and minorities because of money. If he succeeds at this oppression, next he'll go after LGBTQ, blacks, and women. No one will be safe except rich, old and ugly people like him!

We don't pay that much property taxes compared to many states and cities. My friends living in the East coast pay three times as much as we do in Seattle, and they also have state income tax, and some even have city income tax.
10
This is all face noise until the SPD revises its existing MOU structure and withdraws from WSFC and every other Fed connected MOU task force, working group, etc. Happy horseshit for the dumbs. It isn't like the Feds can't tune into a scanner and find out Abdullah has a nonresident DL when it's run through ACCESS.
11
You lost me at "immigrated without documents." I oppose calling people "aliens" or even "illegal immigrants," but they did not immigrate without documents; they immigrated illegally. Even if it is a civil offense rather than a criminal one. If I park in front of a fire hydrant, I have parked illegally. Y'all are full of shit.
12
That local millionaires tax is looking better and better. #goKshama
13
You remember how they made states set the speed limit to 55 mph, and required seat belt and helmet laws in order to get federal highway funds? It's legal.

If Olympia would let Seattle collect income tax, we could directly replace both the Trump tax cuts and the funding. Instead we have to use property taxes.

But not the police. Just defund them. The mayor has no power to tell the cops to leave immigrants alone. If he did he'd have been able to stop them killing black people without a judge having to babysit. Cops are right wing racists. You can't just tell them to quit being racist. That's what deplorable means. Stop paying them.
14
I was being facetious - it seems inconceivable that Seattle could make up for the loss of federal funds through taxation without crippling its economy.
15
If they are here illegally, they go home. Why is this so hard to understand. If I went to Canada illegally, they would send me home.

We have laws. I am all for immigration when done legally. Seriously, Ann I missing something?
16
@15 I dunno, Ann; are you?
18
@11 "I'm no fan of __________, but (convoluted hot take on how I agree with _____, because I'm actually a troll working to sow seeds of discontent but want to seem semi-legit or at least only fringe-y)."

Thanks for adhering to the new script.

@7:

My preferred appellation is "Red Hats".

@17:

My thought as well. The feds cut off our funding, we cut off theirs.

19:

That's a point the anti-immigrant contingent always conveniently overlooks: workers don't come here illegally to take American jobs; they come here illegally because companies here will pay them a pittance (but still more than what they could earn in their native countries) to do jobs good, God-fearing 'murkins wouldn't touch at those wages.
21
I've always wondered: if you want to crack down on illegal immigration, why not go after the employers? They are breaking the law too and would be much easier to target by law enforcement.
22
@13 "You remember how they made states set the speed limit to 55 mph, and required seat belt and helmet laws in order to get federal highway funds? It's legal."

As I understand it, the rules and the funding threatened have to be related, like speed limits and highway funding. So....they're going to take away our federal illegal immigrant funding?
24
This would in no way cripple Seattle. It's 2% of the city's budget. A 2% tax increase is not nothing, but we'd remain some of the least taxed people on earth.
25
@23 Yeah but he's not going to do that.
27
"I am willing to lose every single penny to protect those people!"

We swoon at the courage.

Plus, we can use that money on The Wall.
28
@26, I know, but I'd still like to hear their excuse as to why my idea won't work.
29
You tell'em Ed, Jay, Primila and the rest! You dont need their tainted federal money to harbor criminals who kill activists in the streets (and in which you have no suspects). You dont need their tainted federal money to harbor criminals who have running gun battles in places like Pike/Broadway or Pike Place Market where the average condo is much more than most of the workforce could make in a life time. And you dont need that federal money, like San Francisco - another santuary city, to harbor repeat offenders walking up to an unsuspecting women and shooting them in the head while walking with their families. And you'll fight to get that taxpayer money! Interesting, when it come to bullying, it sounds like the only difference between you folks and Donald Trump is that Donald Trump actually has a clue as to what you dont seem to see. You're a dying breed because you let "plausible deniabilty" be your guides while reaping the profits and now you know and we know you're screwed and there is no hope of anything you can do about it until the mid-terms - and even then that has yet to be seen. Welcome to the world of the real!
30
It would be interesting to see if Murray's taken similar positions in the past. The Feds have gotten away with using the threat of withdrawing Funding to force the States to take action on other occasions.

On Real ID for instance, are these folks willing to lose Federal dollars to keep WA Drivers Licenses the same? To lower the Drinking Age? (Aware those are state level issues)
32
lil eddie will get his head shoved in a toilet and get it flushed. yeah, of course he doesn't care about losing federal money - he'll just steal it from property owners.

136,628,459 total votes
= 100% -> Clinton + Trump + Others

1st place: 65,844,610 votes
= 48.2% -> Clinton

2nd place: 62,979,636 votes
= 46.10% -> Trump

3rd and below place: 7,804,213 votes

73,648,823 votes = 54% did NOT vote for Trump

62,979,636 votes = 46% did vote for Trump

Trump lost the popular vote by 8% of all votes cast, 10,669,187 votes!!!

I understand how the the electoral college works. I am also not forgetting that Trump lost by almost 8% of the popular vote despite being aided and abetted by Russia hacking, altering, and spreading information damaging to Clinton, generating and spreading fake news detrimental to Clinton, posting false and negative comparisons about Clinton detrimental to Clinton; at the direction of Putin. In addition, Comey. He took a calculated political risk, figuring, if it succeeds, I retain my job, if it fails, I cement my financial future on the lecture circuit. Clinton could not overcome an electoral college system, aid of a foreign government to her opponent, the Director of the FBI aiding and abetting her opponent, and her opponent's false smears - despite winning the most votes!!!

This is no mandate. This is a technical win. He represents all Americans, not just the side that got the least votes.

"I understand how the the electoral college works."
Really?
Really?
Then you understand that Trump won, with 57% of the Electoral College votes, to 42% for The Loser.
All the other crap you present is trivia.
The way The Left keeps whining about the results makes us start to wonder if they are just spoiled brats pitching a tantrum because they lost or if in fact they are really really really dense...
36
The divisiveness is just so ugly. That dumbass Murray is only acting like a buffoon because he thinks its what you repugnant people want. He's missing such a wonderful opportunity to be pragmatic and its all because of the hate and ugliness that has invested this city. disgraceful.
37
I am confused. Is Mayor Murray in violation of a US Law?

If he is violating US Law, then he is in violation of his oath of office.
Such a violation makes him subject to a recall filing.

Is Mayor Murray above the current US Laws?

What does the law actually say?
38
Obey the law or ave federal funds cut off. You can't have it both ways. There is a new sheriff in town snowflakes...... LOL
39
#march1352

And your point is what snowflake? Bill Clinton beat George H W Bush and only got 43% of the popular vote. Didn't see people crying and rioting when he won.
40
Ok, Murray and O'Toole ... if you're committed to resisting the immigration ban, why did SPD officers arrest and pepper-spray the SEATAC protesters on Saturday night? Talk is cheap: now let's see you direct city employees -- hello, SPD -- to assist protesters, not fight us.
41
Murray is a laughing stock and a shame to our nation. Seattle is full of fools. Pedofile lately?
