Thoughtful article, no comments.
Interesting that far less important article -- pointless heckling of Murrray at an Irish lunch -- with 11 comments.
Sloggers are wimps.

Let me violate the Shabbat to add an observation. I could explain that hamantashen are triangular to reflect Haman's hat, but I had to be reminded of the whole story of Purim. So reading this post, it occurred to me now that Haman sounds a lot like Steve Bannon.

And in today's NY Times, Seattle-based opinion columnist Tim Egan had a piece, The Bombs of Steve Bannon, where he compared Bannon to King Henry VIII's evil consigliere Thomas Cronwell. And then some commenters pointed out something my mom has been all over for a while now, that the more apt comparison is Rasputin. OK, so Bannon's relationship to King Trump is comparable to Haman's relationship to King Ahasueras, Thomas Cronwell's relationship to King Henry VIII, and Rasputin's relationship to Tsar Nicholas II.

There's another thing these three historical figures, Haman, Cronwell, and Rasputin, all have in common. They all came to violent ends. I sincerely hope that will not be the case with Bannon, and considering that he has the visage of an alcoholic, he'll probably die of natural causes soon enough.

Shake your groggers, fellow Tribespeople, get a little drunk for Purim, but don't expect this to stop anytime soon. It's always right near the surface, waiting for a Trump to come along.
4
And it's Thomas CroMwell, who was a man of his time rather than evil, and didn't even begin to match Steve Bannon in viciousness.

Thank you for a beautiful piece, Mix Brownstone. Also where can I get Purim cookies?
6
That shoulda been Miz Brownstone.

If anyone knows where to buy hamantaschen in the Seattle area, speak up.

If not, here's a good recipe:

Now don’t get me wrong; Purim was always one of my very favorite Jewish holidays.
Hard to go wrong with the triple D- Dressing up, Drinking, Dancing- and many years ago there was also the slight possibility of getting laid.

Yet marketing Purim as a “miracle” is nothing but an insult to readers’ intelligence.
Let’s take a look:
The ruler of some Persian town used to hold decadent parties. During one of them he asked his wife to dance nude in front of his guests. The wife said, “Fuck you,” the mayor/king told her, “Well… fuck you too, you’re out of here,” and immediately announced his wish to find a traditional, obedient, sexy wife.
One can only imagine what auditions looked like.

The winner was a young woman named Esther. Not much was known about her. There were no parents involved, only a so-called “uncle” (not brother!) who took her from place to place and got some favors in return. Once talented Esther got the full-time wife position; the uncle got a part-time gate-keeping one. They never disclosed their Jewishness, assumingly for marketing reasons.
One day the so-called uncle heard one of the Mayor’s trusted advisors plotting to harm the local Jews and relayed the info to her majesty. That night she paused half way through and broke the news.
“Well, then what?” said his.
“I’m… also Jewish….,” said her… “Would you like me to continue?”

The bad guy was hanged the next day and for the first time ever the “uncle” landed a legit full time job.

Now not to offend anyone, but very sadly one of the very few foreign governments that publicly embrace the much-maligned Trump regime is the Israeli one.

Ms. 91- U Village QFC is one of the very few, unfortunately the Mercer Island Albertson’s is no more.

Hag Same’akh to all!

Does anybody actually still consider Bill Maher liberal anymore? I don't watch his show, but that one clip with Milo where he conceded that misgendering might be "reasonable" should have destroyed his cred forever. Liberal, conservative, whatever, maybe you should know something about the issues you're addressing BEFORE you invite some hatemongering douchebag on your show to spread misinformation.

@9: The Book of Esther is notoriously devoid of miracles, and God is hardly mentioned in it (and plays no overt role in the events).
It's a modern Jewish narrative, in some ways. Instead of being a mighty people ruling the lands promised to us, we're a minority living in a larger multiethnic state that tolerates us to a degree. And instead of God bringing us out of danger with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, it's up to us as men and women to save the day ourselves with only our wits and courage.

I applaud your G-free take on this story, as well as the contemporary ramifications that Brownstone also alluded to.
The way I see it on top of “wit and courage” there were also body and looks, a potentially abusive uncle (suspiciously known as “tzadik,” something like 80% or more saint,) and fame-seeking opportunists who may have acted only when they had no choice.

Brownstone did a good job in tying Islamophobia and hate mongering against other minorities as a possible reason for the spike in anti-Jewish acts. We’re all in it together.

#2 Eltana - one of the many excellent points of the story is that Haman was hoist by his own petard, so to speak, and hanged on the very gallows he had constructed for Mordechai's prospective hanging.

@11 -- he's less "liberal" than liberal-provocateur, and he saw in Milo someone who was yes, shitty, but also good at that same schtick, and was actually willing to give him credit for it. If you're looking for Maher to be a splendid Liberal icon, you're gonna be disappointed.

Please wait...
