These people are the black version of Aryan Nation combined with the mafia. They openly expose hatred towards Asians, Jews, whites, and gays. Garrett has stated he suffers from "post-slavery tramatic syndrome" yet has no problem swinging around the African Union flag despite slavery still taking place all over that continent. Most countries in Africa today have a current civil rights record that makes 1920 Mississippi look good by comparison.
Washington State never had slavery. Asians and Native Americans have been treated worse in both this city and in this state then blacks. These racist extortionists will milk white guilt for all it's worth.

He's a black nationalist with a "Peace Center". Biggest oxymoron since the Aryan Nation Center for Diversity and Inclusion.

That house has been a mess for decades, and has been without utilities for about a year.

The story misses the backstory -- how much warning (years?) the evictees had to leave.
W/o knowing, impossible to offer much sympathy or condemnation.

I'll miss getting my Christmas trees from Omari every year there. Too bad.

Stranger reporters--you guys need to get a basic account to access the local court files. It's even online! You could have read about the whole story for yourself if you've done your basic research in the court file. Omari is a guy who knows how to fight a hopeless eviction, which you would have noticed if you'd only glanced at the court file. Three removals to federal court, eight months of delay. That's how you fight the man when you don't have a lawyer or the man's law on your side. Most evictions take three weeks, max. Bravo, Omari. We'll miss the Peace Center.

Tahir-Garrett has been grandstanding loudmouth for decades. He was convicted of assault back in 1989 after grabbing a UW police officer's handgun (which was holstered) at a demonstration. There was the unprovoked attack on Mayor Schell in 2001. Having seen him at demonstrations my own view is that he's bi-polar and often manic but gets a pass from some because of his political views. Now he's claiming persecution for not being allowed to live on someone else's property. As for stringing an eviction out for 8 months, as claimed by another poster, good luck finding any willing to rent to him.

Oh lord, Garrett pere been a civic pain in the ass for decades. Now Garret fils is taking the torch.

IDK reads like some sort of extended family squabble gone noisily public to me.

Why is Cynthia McKinney's name on the building?

this does not sound like much of a loss for the community unless you really really dig crazy people.

Now you have the YIMBY's screaming about gentrification, give me a break. POC are simply a mascot for you density-at-all-costs urbanists to advance your agenda.

This story about Umjoa Peace Center is an example of how misguided your ideology is. The location is one of those eeeevil single family homes, must be some rich, privileged white Trump voter living in it, hmmm? So the resident is being evicted so the land can be developed. Who do you dumb asses think is going to live in the fancy condos they build there? Hint: it won't be the poor black people you profess to speak for.

"This is what gentrification looks like?" THIS IS WHAT YOU URBANISTS WANTED! To get rid of SF homes!

How about instead of pretending to be on his side, you YIMBY's go apologize to him instead?

What a shame. In 10 years, everyone will look back and wonder how this could have happened. Yes, this is racism, and gentrification, and it is violent, and Omari knew it. Africatown is an incredible idea, and instead of rallying behind it, the city tore up 23rd, the main artery, and kept it that way for month after month while businesses languished. The beautiful James Washington fountain, which Omari and friends did their best to keep up, trying for support, will be hauled away and installed somewhere where difficult questions aren't asked. Omari has supported youth, homeless people, and often joined the antiwar protest on 23rd and Union. Bit by bit, it was all torn away.
