The family of Robert Godwin (the alleged victim of Steve Stephens) says he was probably killed while looking for cans. Kokorita

The most hated man in America, Steve Stephens (he posted a video on Facebook of an elderly Cleveland man, Robert Godwin, being executed), has been found dead in a white Ford Fusion. The public now calls him the Facebook killer. The police believe he killed himself after a chase, which started when his car was spotted outside a McDonald's in Erie, Pennsylvania. His last meal, if he indeed ate it, was a 20-piece McNuggets—he also ordered larger fries, but when he was informed that it would take an "extra minute," he left with just the McNuggets. "I've been doing this for 34 years," said the owner of the franchise. "[Stephens] didn't want his money, he wanted the nuggets and to leave."

Last night, a friend who is a white, middle-aged lawyer raised in Eastern Washington told me something interesting...

She explained that her heart was broken when she watched a news interview with the family of the Facebook killer's victim—a retired foundry worker (a foundry factory makes metal castings). The black family explained that their black father was probably killed while looking for cans. From my friend, who lives in a high-rise on First Hill:

You know. He collected cans. He walked around the neighborhood looking for cans, and kept them. You know my grandfather did that, too. He would walk around Spokane looking for cans, he kept them in the garage. A whole bunch of cans, piled up. Cans of every kind. He loved them. I thought of my grandfather when I heard about their father.
Her little story echoes in a file in my mind that is reserved for things I do not yet understand: collecting cans.
