Good on the ACLU for having the conviction to defend the freedoms of all Americans. As an organization, they seem more important than ever these days.

To be honest, no one should want to travel down that path where we can ban speech or assembly if we disagree with the politics behind it, or based on the actions of people who are tenuously connected at best to those politics. Those Antifa assholes beat people up all the time, but no one is demanding socialists or liberals be barred from organizing. Would we want to ban Muslims from a parade after some insane Jihadist commits an act of violence?

Everyone wants to "assign" this Jeremy Christians guy to a group, but the guy was all over the place nuts if his social media is anything to go on. Hated Clinton, loved Sanders and Stein, yet marched in rally for conservatives and threw up Nazi salutes, yet hated Trump and at the same time admired him. Has a history of violent crime.

When the 9-11 attacks occurred, people didn't call it a hate crime. They called it terrorism. When subsequent, similar attacks occurred, the same term was used. Even when these attacks were "lone wolf" in nature, and there was no sign that an organization like Al Qaeda or ISIS was behind it, the attack was called terrorism. Quite often the term Islamic Terrorist was used, to differentiate it from other forms of terrorism (such as attacks made by the IRA).

I think we should simply call these attacks white terrorism. These are people who have taken a perfectly fine identity (being white) and perverted it. When will the white leaders speak out against such evil acts? I know there are some good white people out there, but it is time for the good white people to control the bad ones. Shouldn't the government be doing more to control the white people. As a white man myself, I am fearful of my fellow white brothers being radicalized.

I think of hate crime as a subset of terrorism, in that it is an act of terrorism targeted against a specific (general minoritized) group within society. So the attack in Portland was both a hate crime and terrorism. An indiscriminate attack on American society such as 9/11 is terrorism without really being a hate crime.

I agree that the classification of hate crimes as terrorism should be more widely discussed.

White – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa.
