The employer/employee percentages and per week costs are mixed up in paragraph 4

Wait, companies of less than 50 employees are exempt?!?! WTF?!?! I'm an architect and have never in my career worked for a firm with more than 20 employees. I also just took my second, UNPAID maternity leave. This time I was able to use up all my sick leave and vacation time to fund the first month of it, but now I have now vacation or sick time left for the rest of the year. I get that small business owners struggle with these sorts of things, but god damn it, lots of people work for those small business owners and we're not covered by FMLA and we're not covered by this!

What is the mechanism for people to prove they're taking time off for one of these reasons? There must be a requirement for proof, right? I'm a freelancer, I can't go on vacation and just say I'm caring for a sick parent.

@5: Freelancers are self-employed. As in, sole proprietors. Have you heard of that term?

Self-employed people are covered under this law, as the article states, paying the employee portion (and don't tell me I don't get taxed -- I just paid my B&O tax yesterday).

Please wait...
