How did you choose 35 mph, Charles?
3
You're mixing up your vehicles, Mr. Mudede. The 2010 model used in the terrorist attack was a base cheap model and has no chance of getting to 100MPH in under 10 seconds; the Hellcat is a completely different beast altogether, and it's the one that can do 0-100 in under 10 seconds. It also sells for about $65K.

Also, fun fact: The Hellcat is still slower (both to 60 and to 100mph) than an electric Tesla Model S, and it weighs about 500 pounds less to boot. Electric cars don't have an engine to spin up, so all of their electric power immediately gets to the wheels. The only thing keeping the Tesla from going even faster is tire technology.

Another fun fact: most of the faster cars on the road also have better brakes, and can stop significantly faster than lower-end cars, even ones that are considerably lighter. So when not driven like an idiot, they are often safer.

You're absolutely right that there's no reason cars should be allowed near the market, however.

@4:

That's pretty much the plot of "Death Race 2000", except with less of the Civil War, although it does feature neo-Nazi's...

"There's not one good reason to make and sell cars that go faster than 35 mph."
Uh, have you ever been to Wyoming, Utah or Montana?
Or eastern Washington?
One very "GOOD REASON" is that it would take quite of bit of driving time to get somewhere with a top speed 35 mph. You really need to see more of the country, Charles. It would do you some good.

The "left" wants you to believe driving is a privilege for the elite. I wondered how long it would take for this idiotic logic to go from firearms to vehicles. This is one of the most bullshit articles I have ever read. I thought I was reading an Onion article at first.

@3, thank you. i learned a lot.

Considering WA's top highway speed is 70mph, and ppl regularly drive 74mph... then 35 is a leetle slow. I personally would be hellannoyed having to drive over 5 hours to PDX (assuming no +1 hour traffic jams, so probably 6 hours,.. instead of today's standard 3 hours+1 hour jams=4 hrs to PDX.) Yes yes, trains are better, I wholly agree, but until we seriously invest in proper trains transport (and run Amtrak on non-freight--owned rails), many are stuck driving.

As far as being afraid of any random muscle car on the roads (or low-flying airliners)... well, that's exactly how terrorism works. Well done "alt-right" shitheads! Making America Afraid Again, are we? fucking right-wing terrorists.

This is the most stupid thing I've read in awile. If you don't like muscle cars, go buy a Prius. Leave the rest of us alone.
12
FYI, not all muscle car drivers are dicks. Secondly, the car in the picture is a camaro

You, my friend, need to go on a good old-fashioned road trip and absorb some of America's non-urban culture.

A trip across America will surely disabuse you of this quaint "35 mph" notion.

Technical fact: It's not about speed, but about power (strictly speaking Force = Mass x Acceleration). A car's top speed is governed by it's motive power working against friction and air resistance. Where these balance (Power = Resistance), the car can no longer accelerate and reaches it's top speed. Now power is also used for two other things besides mere (Distance = Rate x Time) speed.

The first of these is acceleration. When a car is moving onto the highway and needs to quickly speed up to avoid hitting or being hit by another car, that power is used to quickly accelerate. Power thus means maneuverability and the ability to get out of harm's way.
The second other thing is to resist gravity and move heavy loads. Now it is a fact that gravity is a big downer. On hills (and I assure you, Seattle has some of these) it's harder for a car to accelerate. A car's top speed is given by the point at which Power = Resistance. A car going up hill has to fight against friction, air resistance, AND gravity. So a car with a top speed of 35 mph, might only have a top speed of 30 or 25, or maybe even 5 mph uphill. In fact, with a weak enough engine and a steep enough hill, a car might not even be able to move upward. This might leave a lot of poor stranded cars hopelessly wandering at the bottom of Pike street, desperately trying to climb out of the waterfront basin. Don't even let me load you down with the facts about towing and cargo capacity (I won't get all over your mass about it).

(CNN) On Thursday afternoon, a van rammed into a crowd of people in Barcelona, killing 13 people and injuring at least 100.

Jesus fucking christ you cry babies need some serious mental health evaluations. Fuck this crying over every boogie man on earth if it isn't bubble wrapped, of course you would be scared of that too. I am not shitting you nor trolling, this shit are signs of a mental health issues.

I'd like to offer the author a ride in my supercharged Camaro... I'll show him the joy of the freedom found near the top of the speedometer. :-)

I 100% agree that cars should not be allowed near Pike Place, but otherwise I do not understand why this tweet is getting any validation. Wanting all cars to disappear so only bikes move around the city is a cute idea, but a lot of people live farther than ten blocks from their destination. I have to drive 35 miles to get to Seattle, and I'm not going to go 35 mph the whole time. (Also are buses still allowed in this imaginary world? I can think of plenty of fatal accidents involving a very heavy bus. Do you know how long it takes to slow those down? It's not just about acceleration.)

Any car can kill someone. A 3000lb Prius will run you down just as hard as a muscle car, and there are hundreds of videos of tiny compact cars with a nervous driver slamming through walls, over barriers, and into people. I understand that parking, public transportation, bikes etc. are extremely important to Seattle (and me, I was born and raised here) but this article and that tweet are ignorant fear mongering. At least the muscle car warns you it's coming instead of the barely audible hum of a hybrid.

All the people saying that the Prius is just as dangerous as a muscle car are completely wrong. Cars with sloped fronts and soft hoods are safer. This is something that the World Health Organization has studied and reported on for people concerned with facts.

Please wait...
