There was no total solar eclipse anywhere in Washington State in 1982. Dillard published and her essay in 1982 about the Feb 1979 eclipse.

It wasn't a typo. It was a revealing mistake. Mr. Frizelle is and arts and culture writer who apparently did not closely read the essay he recommended and THAT's a real problem.
