Orca cards are great because they're versatile; they work on buses, light rail, and ferries (though you have to get a ferry pass loaded on the card). However, they don't work on the Monorail running between Seattle Center and Westlake Center. If you wanted to ride the monorail (as apparently two million people do every year), you have to break out your change.

For what it's worth, Mayor Ed Murray wants to change that, and make it so that Orca cards work on the Monorail as well. “Seattle Center is becoming more connected to downtown, and the Monorail is the best path between these two important hubs,” Murray said in a press release.

The Mayor's office cites a study conducted by Seattle Center and the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) which found that allowing Orca cards on the monorail will increase ridership between seven and 16 percent over three years.

The Monorail is operated by Seattle Monorail Services, a private company. Charles Mudede last year argued that the city should operate the monorail instead.
