Amazon is the evil empire. I thought it was Starbucks but I was terribly wrong. I live in the evil empire's evil empire but I refuse to get sucked in. Buy local. In person. With money.

Of all the reasons not to buy from Amazon, telling Seattleites to "keep your money local" is the least effective for me. Amazon is local.

A large number of local stores are just reselling goods they source from Amazon. Sad but true.

What is the carbon footprint of everyone shopping local?

This lock is a gadget for people who buy gadgets. The first person you know who will get one is That Guy with a Juicero and a Nest Thermostat.

@4 So true.

With Prime Now they'll shop locally for you. And probably even creepily deliver it to your home if you ask them to.

Ooh, if I don't answer the door and order a pizza and some beer from them will they deliver it right to my couch?

People who buy from Amazon (and I'm one of those people) aren't going to take your suggestion to just shop local. And I guess people who suggest that we just shop local aren't going to understand what makes Amazon so attractive to so many people.

Amazon is a great replacement for Radio Shack and Best Buy type of buys. Where are you going to "shop local" and find all of those cheap RGB LED strips and controllers, fog machines, party lights, empty gelatin capsules, decent hand tools, etc etc?

Amazon is a 21st century retail service. You're kind of a dick if you use it for everything in smaller towns where "buy local" actually means supporting local business owners more often than not (vs chains and conglomerates, the only "people" who can afford to run businesses in Seattle for many types of products) but a majority of the things I bought on Amazon cost less than local options, which were Lowes or Home Depot most of the time, or simply didn't exist locally because any of the maybe 2-3 stores that would have carried something like it are not worth trekking an hour round-trip or already lost their leases.

That being said, there are still plenty of options for local food, be it actual farmer's markets or just Albertson's or TJ's. Amazon Fresh is for assholes.

Spoken as someone who has never had a smart lock. I'm not too worried about theft from an Amazon delivery driver. If someone wanted to break in they could go around to the many windows and several glass sliding doors that aren't covered by a camera, then have the run of the house.

We had a smart lock on our last house while we had kids still home and it is great to be able to assign a different code to people who have access to the house. We could give the cleaner her own code that only worked for the couple hours she was suppose to be there and we could turn off all access while we were out of town so that the only code that would work is the one my wife and I knew. No worry about who had keys, and if you thought a code was compromised, you delete it and give out a fresh one. We could autolock the door at night then have logged access times of when the kids came and went.

If we weren't in a rental right now, I would get another smart lock and I would consider the amazon lock.

but then I have to interact with people.

Please wait...
