Trump Tax Cut Fallout: An Optimistic Take and a Pessimistic Take

Democrats just don't have the balls. America will continue to swap places with China and its people deserve every bit of it.
2
Truth, Dan. The Dems, led by the likes of Pelosi, Schumer, and Perez, won’t demonize the forces underwriting the GOP shift in to a John Birch Society affiliate.. They won’t, because like the op-ed in the NYT from a Wall Street trader, they think they need Wall Street money to be competitive in elections. Until the Dem leadership is replaced with a physical overthrow and their internment in secret locations in Maine, the party simply doesn’t have the right people in place to contest the GOP, to point the fingers, to righteously and honestly tell the public what is happening.

Charming @1. Piss off.
Glad you didn't print it in it's entirety Dan. Twitter, the new journalism.

I appreciate Jonathan Chait's optimism that "the tax cuts are reversible and highly likely to be reversed." Or maybe I should say, I appreciate that someone as prominent as Jonathan Chait is even talking about reversing them. As I just commented in today's Morning News, the Democrats should be making repeal be a simple, coherent opening rallying cry for 2020, but I'm just so cynical about our national politics, I find it hard to imagine that the Dems would rally around anything so obviously necessary and achievable.

I mean, just imagine someone like Hillary Clinton or Donna Brazile or Chuck Schumer or Nancy Pelosi or even Elizabeth Warren, I'm sorry to say, talking about reversing this bill. With the possible exception of Warren, I simply cannot.

Try imagining the up-and-comers like Kamala Harris or Cory Booker. They can offer unattainable pipe dreams like "Medicare for All." They can talk theoretically about "universal basic income." But something so simple and obvious and tangible as repealing this tax bill? I'd be shocked if they uttered the words. Never mind that it's an electoral winner.

@2:

Well, I suppose one can take that position, assuming one completely ignores the Casandra-like warnings the Democratic Party has been shouting to the masses about this very subject for a couple of decades now. You can blame them for not shouting loudly or frequently enough, but as Mr. Roberts quite correctly points out - you can't make the listener receive the message if they simply refuse to hear it, or upon hearing it, refuse to believe in its veracity. This is what the GOP has managed to accomplish: working so completely against the collective interests of their non-1% supporters that, even when you point out their subterfuge, mendacity, and avarice the voters simply refuse to believe anyone who purports to be working for them could be so blatantly, callously hypocritical.

The only way convince the average dope to vote for their own self interest is to make things so objectively bad that they demand change. People literally need to be starving to death.
6
And? Plans are needed, not just another description of what we all fucking know.. face the past mistakes and learn from them, and plan what the hell can be done. These people in charge are greedy, cruel and mad people. Ready to go to war with Nth Korea, kill untold millions. Some, initially, US soldiers.

Boy am I tired of those g-d Twitter scrolls. I just can't read them anymore, don't care what they say. Put all that in one or two PARAGRAPHS. Remember those? Take a screen shot and then put that in a g-d twit.
8
@7 it's like all our public speakers have a nasty case of hiccups.
9
Not sure if it's odd or not, but I find it frustrating the termination of the health care mandate isn't getting more airtime. It's the backbone of the ACA and is gonna be just as effective at kicking millions off their coverage as the shitty ass repeal/replace plans would have been. Wonder if McCain (or any of the other reps who opposed those efforts) will have the balls to demand this aspect of the bill be removed, or oppose it otherwise. I won't hold my breath.
10
"They refuse to believe it."

THAT is the power of the psychopathic racism and white trash supremacy at the heart of our despicable political system.

Poll after poll shows that most people agree with Democrats on all of the issues and soundly reject the RepubliKKKans’ fascist, kleptocratic insanity, and yet they vote for the GOPnazis ‘cuz they hate ‘bortions, tax’s, and brown people. What the (white) public really wants are racist Democrats.
11
@10 They want to believe they are gun-toting, John Wayne, rugged individualists who would be doing great in the free market if the damn government would just get out of the way and let capitalism work the way it's supposed to.
12
@11:

The problem being of course that if Capitalism were actually allowed to work the way it's supposed to, all those gun-toting, John Wayne, rugged individualists would be endlessly toiling in unsafe working conditions for slave-labor wages, ala the robotized proles in Lang's "Metropolis".

The house has two options to pass tax scam bill- conference and pass as is.
Today: Call 1-855-980-2350 to be connected to your Representative and tell them to vote to go to *conference on the tax bill*. We want to make sure that the House does not pass the Senate version as-is. If we can delay the process, we increase our chances of defeating the tax scam.
14
@7 David Roberts also wrote a proper (non-tweet storm) essay over at Vox.
15
tweet storm
stopped reading there
16
@4, Kamala and Cory could advocate for a repeal of the tax bill, but they would lose the big donors they're counting on for the 2020 campaign.

Bernie, bless his heart, is the only guy shouting for it.
17
#3 Since we're engaging in childish retorts, make me.
18
@ 4 I can see them saying it easily

@4: I can think of one national politician who would have no qualms about campaigning on reversing this piece of legislation and raising taxes on the wealthy.

Hint: This person is the most popular active politician in the country, is still outpolling Donald Trump, and is more popular than Hillary Clinton among her own supporters.

They can offer unattainable pipe dreams like "Medicare for All."

Unattainable? As of December 1, 2017, Gallop found that 47% of Americans support nationalizing healthcare, up 27% from 2010. Other polling has found that single payer is even more popular:

Nearly half of voters, 49 percent, say they support 'a single-payer health care system, where all Americans would get their health insurance from one government plan' — greater than the 35 percent who oppose such a plan. Seventeen percent of voters have no opinion. Two-thirds of Democratic voters support single-payer, while 18 percent oppose it.

At the moment, 120 House representatives and 16 Senators have signed on in support of Medicare for All. Perhaps the most startling fact is that the program is actually more popular than the Democratic Party itself.

I think this sort of "unattainable" statement is why conservative Democrats, like yourself, have been on the losing end for the past decade. People aren't opposed to taxation if it goes towards something like Medicare for All, Universal Education, or, hell, even a UBI. People aren't opposed to taxation if you can adequately explain that it saves them money in the long run.

If you don't argue for ambitious and egalitarian policies, then, in the minds of most Americans, you're just arguing for a generic increase in taxes for more of the same.

Thanks for reminding me why GWB was so bad. This one is so awful it's hard to even remember...

They won't be able to drive home the message that Trumps economic populism is a fraud because that's not WHY people voted for Trump. They don't understand the economy. As far as they know the reason their lives suck is because of immigrants stealing their shitty jobs.

Look you guys, they voted for Trump because he gave voice to all their negative emotions: racism, hatred, and revanchism. And as long as he keeps pumping the gas on hate and delivering revenge on the "liberal agenda" they will love him.

And remember this: A huge chunk of coastal liberals - liberals like me - are going to make BIG money on the Pass-Through sections of this tax deal. We are going to get richer. Liberal cities are going to get richer. Seattle will get richer.

And the ignorant mouth-breathers in Trump country are going to get poorer — and that is going to feed into their jealous rage about liberals. there is no stoping the race to the bottom in the Red States. So fuck those piles of shit.

Fuck them. They are only 30% of the electorate.

What liberals need to do is get other fucking liberals and women out voting. That's the problem. When 46% of the women that voted - voted for fucking Trump - you have failure of the petulant cry-baby left - not a success of conservatives.
22
The Republicans have been waging a propaganda war for decades, and they are winning. They have successfully pushed the Democratic party to the right of Richard Nixon, and they will, unless they are somehow countered in a way that the Democrats have failed to do so far, continue winning.

We're fucked, with no lube, by crazy right-wing rich people. Are you enjoying it yet?
