This is what happens when a country elects a dictator. Via the Washington Post:

The Trump administration is prohibiting officials at the nation’s top public health agency from using a list of seven words or phrases — including “fetus” and “transgender” — in any official documents being prepared for next year’s budget.

Policy analysts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta were told of the list of forbidden words at a meeting Thursday with senior CDC officials who oversee the budget, according to an analyst who took part in the 90-minute briefing. The forbidden words are “vulnerable,” “entitlement,” “diversity,” “transgender,” “fetus,” “evidence-based” and “science-based.”

If the CDC can't use these words in the budget or in materials they give to Congress, it means they're not planning to fund research that would help us study access to abortion, birth defects, STIs, racial/gender disparities in healthcare, medical issues affecting transgender people, "vulnerable" people, or anything the CDC is supposed to study. At the same time, removing words like "evidence-based" and "science-based" undercuts the authority of the institution. This is thought-policing at the highest level. People are going to die because of this shit.

The rapid erosion of essential government institutions, spearheaded by Mike Pence and his evangelical necromancer agenda, has been widely reported, but it doesn't seem to be scaring the holy shit out of people yet. (This is in some ways completely understandable, considering the fact that I could have written about the massive GOP tax bill introduced earlier this evening, or about Trump comparing immigrants to trash this morning, or about fifteen other unconscionable acts of cruelty that have transpired in the last 12 hours). But maybe this next-level Orwellian word-banning shit might do the trick.
