What's the purpose of having gender listed at all on a birth certificate? Can't they just have a 3 X 5 card with the location, date, time, parent's names, kid's name, doctor's signature, and a box checked "Yes" for "Live birth?"

@3: It's always seemed like a logical and practical thing to take note of.

Once again, this is news posted without the most important detail: The 3rd option is only available to adults who elect to change their own birth certificate, NOT for newborn babies. The picture only adds to the misconception.

@6 or minors with parental consent, so presumably could be used for newborns? But yeah, the picture is misleading since most will be people old enough to know their own gender.

@8: This is not about changing anyone's anything. This is an optional correction to an inaccurate record. Does your birth certificate state in conflict with reality that you were born on a specific date?
