Whats the 411?
"What's the 411?" Netflix

The big stars of Oscars 2018 have been announced. They are, in this order, Get Out, Lady Bird, The Shape of Water, Mudbound, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. This impressive list includes a film directed by a black American man (Jordon Peele), a film directed by a white American woman (Greta Gerwig), a film directed by a Mexican man (Guillermo del Toro), and a film directed by a black American woman (Dee Rees).

But the person everyone will be rooting for this year is certainly Mary J. Blige. The R&B singer, whose work was recently celebrated at the Royal Room, is not only nominated for her supporting role in the Netflix film Mudbound, but also for co-writing and performing the original song from the same movie. Clearly, she wants more drama. But Mudbound, which is set in Mississippi during the South's Jim Crow period, is a film that has made history.

Its cinematographer, Rachel Morrison, is the first woman to receive an Oscar nomination for director of photography. This is just plain shocking. The very first one ever who is not a man. In 2018. Ninety fucking Academy nominations deep. Goddamn. Why do we hate women so much?

This year's big snubs go to: Wonder Woman, Steven Spielberg, The Disaster Artist, and The Florida Project. You can checkout all the nominations for the 90th Academy Awards here.
