Weird how he tweets these so-called thoughts not long after the right wing noise machine spends the morning saying the same thing...

I'm a teacher. Your forgetting several other problems with this line of thinking.

1) First off, teachers are not paid enough. We often have to use our own money to pay for school supplies and the pressures placed on teachers (to ensure students earn certain scores on standardized tests, meet common core standards, address disciplinary issues, help students overcome a wide range of learning or life challenges, etc.) is overwhelming as-is. Now you want me to train to use a weapon and put myself in the line of fire if an active shooter comes to campus?! Nope. Not going happen. I love my students but I NEVER agreed to put my life on the line for them when I accepted this job.

2) Having a gun in ready-access to both faculty and students is a recipe for disaster. What is a troubled student gets a hold of a teacher's gun? What is a troubled teacher decides to use a gun in the heat of the moment or they mishandle their gun and accidentally kill a staff member or student? More guns in any situation is almost inevitably going to lead to more death.

3) Teachers face enough criticism as it is. We are unfairly blamed for the troubles with our educational system and our student's academic standing in the world and now you want to place student's very lives on our shoulders as well? No. We're not going to be society's scapegoat for not taking the action needed to truly curb mass gun violence in society.

4) I'm a person of color. There's NO WAY I want to be on a campus if/when the police come to campus to handle an active shooter. Do I trust the police not to mistake me for an active shooter and accidentally kill me on site? I have the utmost respect for our law enforcement but racial profiling is a real problem on most police forces. Also, do you think the police want the headache of coming onto a campus and having to sort out who is merely an armed teacher versus the armed shooter? That sounds like a nightmare to me.

Teachers have enough burdens placed on our shoulders. We can't (and shouldn't) be made to serve as pseudo law enforcement on our campuses as well. If that occurs, I can almost guarantee you that there will be a mass exodus of teachers from this profession.

I agree that arming teachers is a stupid idea.

Where exactly does Trump think all these "gun adapt" teachers are going to come from?

I do have one problem with the article.
"...the idea could certainly change the demographic of our nation's teachers from those who want to help students to those who want to kill them."
Fighting fire with fire is a bad idea, and so is fighting stupid with stupid.
4
i'm worried that the 1st rule of holes is being ignored here.
6
It's official. Trump is the stupidest man in America!
7
Just flailing. The plan is to do nothing. Before they trotted out their standard dismissals to quite down any talk of doing anything and it always worked. Now it's not working. What has always worked is to tweet vague promises about half-assed intentions and then go golfing. If anyone asks him about it in a month, he denies it. If anything he tweeted about happens to happen on its own within the next 5 to 10 years, he takes credit.

And the rest of Republicans are counting on Trump here. They have nothing, nothing at all. No plan. They hate Trump, and have no faith in him. But since they're cornered and out of ideas, they're counting on Trump to make it go away. Sad!

@2: Amen.

Personally I'm all for exacerbating the issue until the shit hits the fan.

Even in the hands of people who are highly trained to use weapons (police, military) guns aren't really that accurate, especially pistols. Trying to hit a human sized target, center mass, at 50' with a pistol isn't as easy as you think, and if you miss, that round is still gonna travel a long distance. Now make that a moving target, in a high stress environment, with friendlies all over the place... some of whom are ALSO firing weapons... yeah, I don't predict great results from that.
12
@20: As I mentioned elsewhere, even Marco Rubio thinks this a bad idea Bub, and I think you do too, so just stop.
13
@10: that's because they are dumb AF. more guns in schools doesn't stop a James Holmes or a Stephen Paddock. they're not attacking schools.

you know that, but you won't stop.

17
I'm going to voice the contrary opinion: Yes, teachers should carry guns.
Why? As insane as it otherwise is, for all the good reasons listed above, there is one good reason:
Teachers don't get paid enough.
ARMED teachers have a much better bargaining position.

One visit by a group of teachers to their School Board meeting? I'll bet the Board'll be able to find money for raises...
18
I thought the real issue was mental illness? What have they be doing to work on that problem?
19
@15: they won't, because everything dies in the US Senate. then you'll be able to blame Democrats & say this proves they don't care about children's safety. propaganda victory!
20
I've also worked in schools, and would confirm everything @2 says.

Plus, I'm a veteran, and was the best shot with a handgun in my company in boot camp. Armchair warriors are not thinking this through clearly. Lets say their fever dream comes true: there's an active shooter at a school; an armed teacher pulls out their weapon and returns fire. In the real world, in a situation like this, there is a very high probability that the teacher will miss, at least with some of their shots. Unlike the movies, if a bullet misses the intended target, it keeps going with deadly velocity until it hits something else. Interior walls and windows would barely slow it down. There are hundreds of terrified students in close proximity. What do you suppose is likely to happen with those stray bullets? Even with my training, I would be as likely to accidentally shoot a bystander as the shooter.

You need less bullets in a situation like this, not more. This is a stupid fucking idea.
23
@22. The idea of it is ridiculous, but these armchair qb’s can’t help themselves from trying to seem like the smartest guy in a room full of guys.

@germansausage, when burning flags and attacking Jewish people starts saving lives from gun violence, we’ll give you a call. Until then, go play red army with all your friends and keep pretending you actually know a POC.
24
Hey, It's all worth it as long as it's for FREEDUMB

Just imagine regressive shitheads starting to love teachers unions if teachers were to have a law enforcement function
25
How is being concerned about accidentally killing or injuring more students ridiculous? I think the argument is that more students will be hurt than there would've been had it only been the active shooter firing. That sounds like a valid concern.

I don't know though... I've never been in combat or a situation that escalated to shooting. Thankfully. I hope I never am. That's why I became a teacher and didn't join the military or police.
27
@22,
Adding more lightly trained shooters to a mass shooting is not a good idea.

In most cases you have a single shooter and several innocents. The likelihood of an errant shot, by anyone, hitting an innocent rather than the shooter is really high.

If you swallow a fly, the solution is not to swallow a spider to eat the fly.
28
@23 - you must be really fun at parties.
29
@25. The idea of giving teachers guns is ridiculous.

Why do you morons argue against the logistics of a stupid idea? It’s stupid. Just say that and let’s move along.

@28. Sick burn...bro.
30
@2 - Your third point is just too true. As a teacher, we already take enough of the blame for the little things in schools. I refuse to be liable for a firearm in addition to all of that. Something people seem to be forgetting is that we are typically idealists; we see the best in humanity, or at least want to. We want our students to succeed. We see students similar to this shooter, and rather than see some asshole that needs to be out, some threat that needs to be eliminated, we see a child in crisis that needs help. In no way does this justify any shooting, but I would be concerned about the teacher willing to actually use a firearm in a crowded school building.

We gotta get everyone in this country well-armed, and pronto. Until we do, there'll never be enough well-weaponed good guys to outshoot all the bad guys / rude people. Oh, and when the bad guys start sporting pocket-nukes we're definitely gonna be up Shit Creek, but, for now, let's support our weapons manufacturers. I'm sure they'll know exactly how to handle all contingencies.

(It must be the lighting, but Mein Trumpfy's "hair" in the pic looked positively fucking silver? WTF -- did his marmot finally give out and all they could locate was a silver-haired bat? Let's hope they also found a better brand of super glue for those more-blusterly days, out on the tarmac.)

#2 Tish made the top points. I'll just add, would teaches be expected to carry a holstered gun? If not, how would they get to it in time if a shooter arrived?

What is the likelihood a teacher would be able to notice a shooter soon enough and react? Versus being shot first and, thus, disarmed.

If the shooter is on the other side of the room, how accurately can the teacher shoot?

Trumps plan sounds wildy ideallic and completely out of touch with reality.
33
And when the SWAT team arrives and blows away everyone brandishing guns, including Mrs Sperry from 3d grade homeroom, are they considered the "good guys with guns"?
I'm so confused.

Oh, and when the bad guys start sporting pocket-nukes we're definitely gonna be up Shit Creek, but, for now, we must continue to blindly support our weapons manufacturers. I'm sure they'll know exactly how to handle all contingencies, both foreign and domestic. They've done a real bang-up job, so far.
