Katie already put this up, but this is a better post. Katie seemed to think that Trump didnā€™t hear Inslee, but itā€™s very clear he did.

Captain Bone Spurs is finally here to save the day and he has no time or patience for the Jay Inslee's of this world. A lightening fast mano a mano superhero and genius and tonight my friends, parents, children and teachers all over this country will be sleeping far sounder than they have for a very long time.

but whatabout this other thing jay didn't do yet and jay is the biggest liar on the west coast and tu quoque and slippery slope and red herring and blah blah blah?

Our captain is a man of peace, but because there are the Obamas and Clintons of this messed up world, sometimes great men like him must fight, bare fisted if necessary. I can't wait for him to take down the next assault rifle wielding thug with his own bare hands, in spite of the fact that a monkey with a pea shooter would probably have better chance at actual success.

In Texas, like almost every other state including Washington long before it, open carry is a thing. I don't how unique it is that you can open carry on college campuses on Texas- my guess is that's far less common. But you cannot carry a weapon, open or otherwise, on public school K-12 property in Texas. Not even in your car in the parking lot. The president is poorly informed (big surprise) if he thinks that Texas already does that. What Texas does have (and I think it's pretty common these days) is police officers who are posted to some campuses. But not teachers or staff or parents or anyone else.

A lot of people are saying that the prospect of arming teachers is so absurd that it won't happen, but I disagree. It will be a slow creep, shifting the overton window just a little at a time until a decade from now, it's totally normal for teachers to be armed.

I'll tell you how it will start, and this is probably what the president was referring to regarding Texas. They will allow for a deputization of one or two teachers per campus. These trained marshals will be people who already carry guns likely who want to volunteer to be the teacher/security on campus. This is already a proposal in Texas, and I think there are a few pilot districts that are doing it. So this is probably what he meant?

Now it doesn't make even a bit of sense to deputize teachers when there are professional police and security forces that a district could employ if it believes that it would be useful to have armed security on campus, but there you go. Each campus will have a handful of trained teacher-soldiers. When the country gets used to this, it will increase so that teachers in general can carry guns. I bet it will be the norm within the decade.

BTW I meant to conclude that it doesn't make sense to deputize teachers rather than hire a cop from all points of view other than gun culture perspective and austerity economics perspective.

Of course this will result in teachers killing students as I said in the post on this topic last week. It's all very depressing.

Unrestricted access to guns is what got us into this tragic, shameful, yet perfectly avoidable mess in the first place - so naturally the far-right believes the "solution" is to make access to guns even more unrestricted than it is now...

If Republicans really believed arming teachers would have stopped school shootings they would have done it 20 years ago. They would have at least put up an armed teacher bill for Democrats to filibuster, or Obama to veto. Or at least done it a year ago, so their agenda wouldn't be derailed and they'd end up on the defensive protecting the NRA. They would have created their mental health solution -- whatever the hell that would look like, considering they oppose universal health care, and background checks -- if they thought it would have saved them from this political disaster. But they know they have no solution. It's just a distraction.

These shootings are hurting them because they demonstrate their inability to govern. The only real way to avoid the shootings is gun control, but that's off the table, so instead they try to throw out red herrings to run out the clock. They want to debate armed teachers for however long it take for the country to get distracted by something else and forget about mass shootings for a while. That's their whole strategy.

Iā€™m guessing that none of that ā€œlisteningā€ our brave Governor has been doing happened in Toppenish or Kiona-Benton school districts where school employees carry on campus.

@13
School administrators actually.
16
@15
Actually... He wants to allow teachers and administrators WHO WANT TO CARRY to arm themselves if they meet certain criteria. He is not suggesting that anyone who is not comfortable carrying should be asked to carry. He is suggesting that we should not bar teachers or administrators who are comfortable and capable from carrying.
17
Go, Governor Jay Inslee, GO!!
@8: For the win.
18
@16 - Yeah, arming people who think to themselves "wow, I could accidentally kill a kid, but at least I could shoot my micropenis at a baddie!" sounds like a great idea. What could go wrong?

@18
Good to see you donā€™t assume the worst motives in everyone who thinks differently than you. Itā€™s people like you who move the conversation forward in a constructive way. You should congratulate yourself.

Please wait...

and remember to be decent to everyone
all of the time.
