>Nothing beats face-to-face interaction

I started lobbying to work from home permanently because of the opposite of this - I was waking up early and sitting through hours of traffic to get to work and it in an office staring at my computer with a bunch of other people doing the same thing. I just don't think people are asking enough.

I didn't watch the Oscars and glad I didn't. We all get it: Trump is a raging asshole. I don't need to have Trump Horror paraded in my face all time time.

One would have to think that a key element of a free society is not having to spend time thinking about "dear leader". Doing that is typically the hallmark of totalitarian regimes.

I kind of expect Katie Herzog to ask whether being a racist necessarily makes you a bad teacher.

Nothing about the lightning strike that took out the giant cedar in my front yard?
My feelings are hurt!

@1st 2: I halfway tuned in at best screenwriter and I didn't hear anything about president asshole. I saw wes studi intro a tribute to the armed forces, however. I thought that was interesting - felt pre-emptive.

The desire to avoid loneliness is maybe a small piece of why only 3% of Seattle works from home.

The MUCH more significant cause is the antiquated but ubiquitous view of management that employees need to sit at their desk for 8 hours a day regardless of productivity. If workers had a choice in the matter, a much larger percentage of us (especially in tech) would chose to work remotely.

@Bub

Gay conversion therapy for minors has been banned.
This is about protecting children.

If, as an adult, you want to see some witch doctor that promises they can pray your gay away, that is absolutely fine.
Your therapist should have already told you this.
Have at it Hoss.

Interesting the the Stranger notes that "Seattle Greys" is being considered as a possible name for an NHL team. Back around 1981 a group of Seattle boosters were trying to come up with an alternate name for Seattle and "Gray Lady" was one of the names in the running; the boosters later settled on "Emerald City". Prior to that time Seattle was known as the "Queen City".

Worth noting that the limited legal technician program also requires a practical experience component of 3,000 hours working as a paralegal or legal assistant under an attorney.
10
I mean, i really don't think we need a hockey team (*more* traffic jams, anyone?), but if my vote for that counts as much as my vote(s) for a monorail did, I'd have to say Seattle Freeze ftw.
11
My goodness, I thought she said "inclusion writer". Thanks for clarifying.
12
@10: too bad; you're getting one.

I thought we'd settled on "Sea Wolves".

"Compare that to the seven years it takes to become a lawyer"

Somebody better tell my lawyer wife that she has 4 more years of school to go. Seriously, I think you fucked up. Law school is typically 3 years.

Different sport, but the Homestead Grays were a Negro Leagues team who played at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, with too many all-time greats to mention -- Josh Gibson, Buck Leonard, Cool Papa Bell...

@6 said it all.

My boss always wants me to come to the office and when I do, I sit at my desk and talk to zero people. I'm not there to socialize, I'm not there to make friends and add to "office culture." I'm there to do the job I'm paid to do, and I can do it far more efficiently from home.

The ancient IBM-style days of suits and ties and water cooler small talk are over. There is absolutely no need for everyone to be at the same location at the same time in order to serve your clients (in my line of work anyway).

Remote work is where we're headed. Or robots taking over more likely. But the "come to the office at 8am and leave at 5pm" days are done. Only the old and dying baby boomer managers still cling to it. They can't die off soon enough.
15
@14 I come to the office so I can convince people before they get into more trouble, by talking in person and by better video chat facilities than I have at home. Sure, it goes in waves, some weeks we have our shit sorted, but most weeks we discover we do not. That's large-scale software for you.

Maybe it's regrettable that you can convince people better that way than by writing an email, but it's how it works. Just being right doesn't do a damn bit of good.
17
Queen City? I totes go for Seattle Queens!
Loneliness might be a problem for working from home, but surely not having to deal with office politics and malicious gossip would compensate for it?

I was speaking with someone the other day about Colstrip, and there is an exciting proposal in the works to replace the coal fired generation with solar and wind installations. It would be perfect on many fronts: It would save jobs, the renewable installations could be put on the damaged land, and the existing transmission infrastructure would still be useful. About the only losers in the deal would be the railroads, who would lose the revenue from hauling coal, but they need to rethink their business model anyway.

No, don't "google" the avalance risk - Google will just try to sell you an avalanche beacon, which will do fuck all if there aren't some people around who didn't get buried in the slide, and also have avalance beacons. Just go to the source: https://www.nwac.us/

The: Brawlers; Lumbermen; Opponents; Sea Wolves (@12!); Scrappers; Skewers; Swagger. I guess the last one's my fave.

Mtn. Beaver @14, when it comes to the Negro League, I'm familiar with the Pittsburgh Crawfords (have a T-shirt in my closet) but not the Homestead Grays.

Speaking of Pittsburgh, my current avatar clearly shows where my hockey allegiances lie, even though I'm sure I'll be rooting for the Seattle what's-their-names as my Western Conference team, or one of my Western Conference teams.
22
Deffo Seattle Freeze. I hate every other name it could possibly be. They all totally suck compared to Seattle Freeze.
23
Yeah, Homestead's actually southeast across the river from Pittsburgh itself, past the slag mountain, but the Grays from early on played their home games where the people were. Actually, I didn't know this, they later transitioned most of their home games to Washington D.C.

(You might know Homestead from the Homestead Steel strike and battle between millworkers and Pinkertons.)

My proposal for a team name is one that makes a nod toward one of Seattle's most distinctive and well-loved icons of public art, kitchy as it may be. Also it makes an allusion to internet culture with street cred and an edgy, youthful vibe. Ladies and Gentlemen, for your consideration-
The Seattle Trolls!

@8:

Don't forget the "Jet City" was an oft-used, although I believe unofficial, moniker as well.

Please wait...
