Some background: After plenty of rumors about a departure, Seattle police chief Kathleen O'Toole stepped down from her role in December. Deputy Chief Carmen Best—who is also vying for the new chiefdom—is serving as interim chief. Choosing the next police chief, assisted by a 25-person committee, is one of the most significant decisions Jenny Durkan will make in her first year as mayor. By May, Durkan's committee will have a list of names, and Durkan will choose the winner in June.
