After Cynthia Nixon, better known as Miranda Hobbes, announced her candidacy for New York governor last week, previous New York mayoral candidate Christine Quinn—perhaps still pissed that Nixon endorsed Bill de Blasio over her in the 2013 Democratic Primary—called Nixon an "unqualified lesbian." Nixon responded with this:

Not sure what's up with those "gratuitous quote marks," but it's a damn good tweet, and, clearly, won Miranda a bunch of likes, if not actual votes. Now, the campaign is capitalizing on the attention by selling "Unqualified Lesbian" buttons, which I suppose makes Unqualified Lesbians the Nasty Women of 2018. Cute.

However, the tweet (and the buttons) obscure what Quinn—who was hired by Andrew Cuomo (New York's current governor and Nixon’s political rival) as a special adviser in 2015—really said.

Here's the full quote:

“Cynthia Nixon was opposed to having a qualified lesbian become mayor of New York City. Now she wants an unqualified lesbian to be the governor of New York," Quinn said. "You have to be qualified and have experience. She isn’t qualified to be the governor."

She's got a point: While Nixon has been fairly active as an advocate for public education and lobbied for marriage equality (and she hits all the progressive marks when it comes to reproductive rights, criminal justice reform, immigration, etc.), if we've learned anything in the past year, being famous on television does not qualify one to hold public office. Besides, Nixon is technically an unqualified bisexual.
